  • It's annoying when your manual transmission wants to be an automatic. But I tore apart my Porsche 911 transaxle to discover why it likes to pop out of gear while I'm cruising. I think I found at least three reasons why it hates me.

    I meant to include this closeup photo of the input shaft carnage. Must have been tired editing last night...

      Thanks! I don't know why I'm so calm about the trashed input shaft. That's an expensive repair anywhere else. I bet my friend Juan Carlos can help me.

    Good content. Show more, please. Transmissions are like voodoo magic. I had an experienced mechanic show me how to rebuild my 901 once and I still would struggle to explain it all to someone else.

      @GarageTimeAutoResto  Год назад +1

      I'm learning and explaining as I go. Kurt at klassic already has great videos on the rebuild of these things. The difference is I don't have all the tools. And I don't have a reputation or warranty to stand behind.

    I watched the 741 series several times. Your innovative approach to making tools was brilliant.

    Very interesting detail on the inner workings. I would like to know more. I had my BB Chevelle M21 Muncie trans rebuilt years ago and it needed several gears and synchro's replaced.

    you can flip the syncros and use them twice. both sides work

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  Год назад

      I don't recommend this because the installed diameter will be too large after you flip it.

  • @crazyDIYguy

    I don't have any porches nor do I really ever intend too but this is very interesting and well made content, thank you.💯
    On a side note, I'm a Subaru guy. It almost looks like with some welding, or modifications you could use a WRX STI 6 speed for a Porche in a pinch perhaps, they look kinda similar.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  Год назад +1

      Thank you for watching. Subaru's are very similar in fact. Some parts were designed by Porsche even. The problem with the Subaru trans in a 911 is it would have 5 speeds in reverse and 1 forward speed😂

    ouch... 2nd and third on the input shaft should NOT move at all. You're going to need to replace that shaft, sorry.. also, the 3/4 slider is likely worn too allowing 3rd to pop out.

    • @GarageTimeAutoResto
      @GarageTimeAutoResto  Год назад +1

      Don't be sorry, that kind of stuff is to be expected. I have a parts trans just for this reason. It might be better than this one, but I hope to pick and choose the best parts.
