This is really one of those movies that only those who like me have a twisted and odd sense of humour, and there in lies the issue most had with it....it's essentially a high budget cult film that mistakenly got marketed towards a mainstream who had no idea what to make of it. However there are those like myself who enjoy cinematic oddities who can really appreciate it for what it was.
I have very mainstream tastes and I really enjoyed it as a child (and a lot of the comments are from people who enjoyed it as children too) . So maybe it's not so much about being a cult classic, but more about being suited to children's tastes more than adults

I saw this in the theatre with my brother when we were kids. My mom came to pick us up afterwards and told us she was making hotdogs for dinner and we basically stroked out in the car🤣😫
I referenced this movie tonight as supper... As we are having sausage and Hawaiian Punch....... They didn't appreciate it as much as I did..... I wish I had a train in the middle of my table....... 😔
I love how they have such an elaborate dinner setting, but yet, they serve the hot dogs not in buns, but in a folded piece of bread! Anyone else notice that?!
I think that's to invoke a sense of irony. Here's a setting where expensive furniture and silverware is used, so you expect high quality food like caviar and whatnot. Instead, you get food you expect to be served in cheap plastic cups and plates.
Chase was always good at playing the straight man in movies like this. I like how he just plays the average guy reacting to Aykroyd's antics and not trying to outdo him. Just being natural.

That was the intention from the director/star/writer/producer Dan Aykroyd, he came up with the idea when he took a friend of his to a screening of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser and he noticed that the audience were laughing at the film so he set out on making a monster movie of sorts with horror elements of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Hellraiser with a comedic and spooky tone akin to the Universal Monster crossover films starring Abbot and Costello and Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.
