It is one of the pieces in the series which verge on a masterpiece. It is also - to my understanding - improvised. Made for 98000 USD for 15 episodes they did every take mainly twice and occassionally 3 times. Some of it is very cheaply shot and quickly shot which as someone who works in television I can see. Some of the episodes the guys have done their make up, for big scenes like the kidnap and the staggering scene on the rooftop where Yin cries feeling he has lost his Father's love much more care has been taken with the direction and these pieces are great art. Whether it would have been a better series had they had 10 times more money I doubt. I think part of the magic was the limited budget and the way much is improvised. The scene in the bed where Gu Hai bangs his head against the bed was not meant to happen and rather than doing it again they just carry one with Yin rubbing his head - it is so real because it was real. It is sometimes akin to a live theatre production.
I love how they improvised the first scene of this episode. This is much sweeter than the one on the novel and I feel that Timmy was the one to improvised this because of his genuine laugh on this scene 😂

By Lo Yin is such a devoted, mature, superb actor, despite his allergies, his upper lip all red and tender, he acts as if nothing is wrong and just follows the direction and script...these two guys are head and shoulders above the Thai crowd of amateurs.
There is no comparison to the Y series made all over Asia currently with something as fine as ADDICTED. Not in terms of script, narrative, direction nor the intensely and strangely beautiful performance of Huang and Xu. It is very cheaply made which is part of its allure. Maximum 3 takes were made of each scene and in many they got it in one take. These are both talents of are soul and depth. The cheap silly Addicted-like copies don't make the cut with the exception of one or two over all these years. But nothing equals Addicted, Hung, Xu and director Ting.
OMG, l loved him here. So handsome n manly. Looks as equal to Johnny. These days he looks so polished and feminine. Still very good looking but I love him here.❤
These pasts 2 Eps have me rolling. They are exactly equal in their ways with their parents. Every time I pause to get something I start laughing with myself looking at the parents dealing with the exact mirrors of their own. This is way better then I thought, I'm just waiting for them to confess to each other. That's when the family drama gets better or worse. I love them, including the parents.
You should watch Beloved Enemy. It's a bromance, cause China didn't want nothing "gay". But you can see the subtext. And Gu Hai really reminds me of the character Yuan Yang, even though YY is horrible to the other ML character for a while.
I like the treatment of the characters..... there is no feminity despite being a homosexual portrayal.. funny scenes are very natural, of young men not trying hard but realistic....the storytelling and sexual inuendos very revealing. The difference in the social status of the two boys does not interfer in the treatment of the story as it evolves..... a masculine charactrer of (Johnny Huang) despite being the outwardly homosexual or agressor is remarkable...the analogy of (Timmy Xu) as the “wife” does not diminish his persona. Both characters are indeed equal.....even in bed. Despite being amateurs and young when this series was shot, makes their acting exceptional.
Buoyin on the surface appears to be innocent but he’s not. He knew from the beginning that Gu Hai was rich, moved to that neighborhood and pretended to be poor. So he knew Gu Hai was wooing him. That’s why he didn’t want Gu Hai to stay for dinner, to sleep over and he himself wore a lot of clothes to bed. He knew exactly what was going on.
I guess Luo Yin was a bit curious about Gu Hai, that's why he insisted on finding out the place where Gu Hai lived. On the next day, Luo Yin appeared in front of the neighbor gate to go to school with Gu Hai. He may already find out or ask people he knows, that also live there / nearby.
This is exactly what Gu Hai accused him of after he kidnapped him. To BLY's defense, straight guys are slow to realize the intention of gay guys. While BLY might have known Gu Hai's rich, he probably didn't realize Gu Hai's intention until later.
He is 5 steps ahead of Gu Hai throughout. He loves secretly, Gu Hai wears his heart on his sleeve. The scene on the rooftop, watch Johnny Huang's eyes, they are red from crying. This is splendid performance. THey are both in the space as if real.

Looks like some scenes got cut off because I remember the moon cake scene was very beautiful in the book. Gu Hai was with his girlfriend. They checked into a hotel 2 hours away from where he lived but Gu Hai couldn’t sleep. Eventually he told his girlfriend he was going for a walk. Five minutes later he texted her and said he had to get back home. He bought the moon cake, drove 2 hours back, went to visit his mom’s grave and then it started to rain. He ran through the rain to Bai Luo Yin’s house at almost midnight so that the two of them could eat moon cake together. He was dripping wet and Bai Luo Yin didn’t want him to stay so he begged and that was when he attempted to confess about the house rental situation. You could say at this point he has already been way head over heels for Bai Luo Yin.
Yes, it is written precisely as you say. It is a tv-series and you see the cumulative episode time is short so I guess something had to give. In a movie version, you would include the beautiful motif's you mention especially him visiting his beloved Mum's grave. The whole serious is such a masterful blend of love, joy and melancholy.
idk what translation you have read but I'm currently re-reading the novel. Gu Hai was with his gf and they watched a movie together. He tricked his gf that he is going to the restroom, texted her that he needs to go bc he's going to his mother. He drive back from Tianjin to Beijing, bought a whole moon cake for BLY so they can eat together. BLY still angry at GH bc he waited for him but didn't back in 2days but after seeing GH's travel-worn face and hugged him, he just let him in inside the house.
Spoiler: Base on the book 2, after 8 yrs of forced separation, Bai Luo Yin became military pilot with a rank of a major while Gu Hai became a successful president of his own company......they had gone through so many challenges , difficulties, and obstacles.....but in the end...they still got married.....🥰🥰🥰 I wish they make it a series again...
I hope the entire thing also about the censorship is not real. Like what if?? They are also waiting for 8 years to make season 2 and everything goes well according to plan. I mean this is just a crazy theory but I really hope one day. 😅

The mother and father are obviously not even bothering where their kids are or what they are doing. You have to wonder at their parenting skills🤣
