    Hey kids! On Weekend Wankshop 138, i'm gonna take you all on a super-sized lesson through EVERY SINGLE GUITAR PART in Ritual by Ghost from their classic debut album Opus Eponymous! And i mean EVERY part, riff, rhythm, lead, and solo in the whole song! That's a lot of stuff, kiddos. This whole album is FULL of awesome riffs like this, though, so let me know if you want to see more in the future!
    Tuning: D G C F A D
    I may not be a Nameless Ghoul or on Papa's payroll, but i am a gigantic fan of this record who obsessively pored over the recording and live videos to give what i believe to be the most accurate lesson on all these parts. I hope you all enjoy!
    playing my man Jon Cooper's awesome Gibson Les Paul through my Kemper Profiler, using a Top Jimi Marshall profile.

    I saw ghost opening for Iron Maiden earlier this month, and even though it was my first concert, I'm betting it's going to be my favorite for so many reasons, including it introducing this song, which is now my favorite song by ghost. And now uncle Ben is showing us how to play it. Couldn't be happier

    Very nice lesson. Ritual is indeed a most excellent song. I'm a new Ghost fan, and I'm so excited to learn to play their songs. I've found several so far that are a good fit for my skill level. They aren't tremendously difficult, but definitely challenge me. I'm not a beginner guitar player, but I'm not a solid intermediate player, either. I've been stuck in a rut of playing oldies rock and metal. Ghost is a breath of fresh air. Finding them has reignited my desire to practice and learn. No more watching the clock to make sure I practice long enough. Thank you! 🎸🎸🤘🤘

    Uncle Ben, it seems like it isn't just the new Ghost guitarist that play that run 0-1-2. Omega seems to change between using 0-1-2 on A and using 5-6-7 on E, but it seems he is consistently using 3-6 for the end of that run.
    If you watch Ghost - Ritual (Live at Music Feeds Studio), you can see Omega use 0-1-2 at timestamp 00:35.

    Also, why play that slide riff with just one finger? Do they do that live?

    • @Circusfreek7
      @Circusfreek7 5 лет назад

      From what I can tell, no, at least Omega doesn't use one finger live when they performed at Music Feeds Studio. If you watch Ghost - Ritual (Live at Music Feeds Studio) timestamp 02:03, which is the Original Ghost Guitarist line up of Omega and Alpha. This is honestly a great video to see how they play it live. There are a lot of tight close up shots of Omega and Alpha's fret board.
      Omega slides from 2 to 3 with index
      shifts his index to 5th fret
      he hammer on's to 7th fret with ring
      uses his pinky for 8th fret
      slides with pinky 8 to 7
      uses index for 5 to 3 slide
      shifts index back to fret 2 for the repeat.
      Of course this is from one live performance. He could change it up between hammer ons to slides, or whatever fingers he wants to use. He could do it all with one finger. To me, if I try to use one finger it just sounds sloppy, rushed, and is just boring for me to play.

    Hey uncle 🅱en. I've been playing guitar a little over a year and a half and I am currently struggling with fast alternate picking. I generally get stuck on part of the string mainly my low E. I'm trying to get my picking to sound crazy fast. Do you have any tips to get my picking to sound like fleshgod apocalypse?

    • @AliJr_MetalGames_MetalGuitar
      @AliJr_MetalGames_MetalGuitar 7 лет назад +2

      Relatively Large Matt make sure you're pick is slanted a bit, and start at an easy pace with an efficient technique.
      Try to minimize excessive motion, and of course, practice it slowly.
      And in order to reach your desired speed, move slightly faster from your comfort zone every other day.
      Good luck : )

    • @Matthew-wx3ju

      Ali Jr. Thank you friend!

    • @ryanwilson5936
      @ryanwilson5936 7 лет назад +3

      Slow down. If you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast.
      Starting at your initial speed now, increasing it will not necessarily improve accuracy. In fact, all you will be doing is masking poor technique by picking faster. Slow down until you can't get it wrong. Then increase your speed. Pay attention to every subtle movement both of your hands make. This is more obvious when playing at a slower speed. Those subtle movements is what technique is born from. Those subtle movements are what you are trying to speed up.
      Focus on pick angle and also on how much of the point is sticking out of your fingers. I use Dunlop Jazz III H (the purple ones). Only a few millimeters of the point is all you need. The less exposed point will be less likely to catch on alternate strings, improve your pinch harmonics a lot (and allow you to use your index finger for pinch harmonics as well), and will allow for a more accurate, deliberate pick attack. A forward lick slant (or rear, really just do what works best for YOU) is required to alternate pick and tremolo pick quickly and accurately.
      Try using mostly your wrist and minimal forearm to pick fast. Tighten up your picking arms shoulder to build a solid picking foundation. Lock in your arm angle with your elbow (I push against the guitar a little for some leverage). Then just focus on picking the strings from there. But most important of all....you must start by picking slowly and remembering to pick up on what your fingers, hands, and arms are actually doing to produce the best sounding note possible then working on improvising the speed and accuracy of those movements.
      Anyone can pick fast dude. Doing it correctly takes practice.

    • @Matthew-wx3ju
      @Matthew-wx3ju 7 лет назад +1

      Ryan Wilson thanks for the advice friend. I need to sit down and take it slow. I honestly just try to go very fast and I just end up getting stuck and I don't know any exercises to help my picking

    • @ryanwilson5936
      @ryanwilson5936 7 лет назад +1

      Relatively Large Matt
      Anytime man! Check out Ola Englund's channel. He just posted (yesterday I think) a video of his warm up routine. It's a good video that I think will help you out a lot. He describes what would take me about 7 paragraphs in a short video. Check it out, it should help.
      Also, remember that an exercise doesn't have to sound like music, that's not its job. An exercise's job is to hone skill and technique. It can literally just be random notes. Honestly, you could just steady quarter note chug the low e string (alternate picking) for an hour, wouldn't hurt a thing. It would also help with muscle memory. An awesome band to learn alternate picking from is Lamb of God.
      You'll get there dude, just keep at it and when you get frustrated take a break. Guitar isn't going anywhere. For me, it helps to think about what I'm trying to do when I'm not playing guitar. Create a little video of yourself in your head playing whatever it is perfectly. Think about what your hands and fingers doing and recreate it perfectly. Your brain still learns with that kind of thinking. Steve Vai has a video titled something like "how to be successful" or similar. RUclips it. He talks about the psychological aspect of becoming the player you want to be. A great inspirational video every musician should watch.

      Blue Öyster Cult and Mercyful Fate/King Diamond are the DNA of Ghost. Awesome influences!

    How can a rhythm guitarist start playing learning lead? It's so hard..

    ? "Ghost" ,Is this really a band? How saddening. -( What happens when a dude in Ghost dies? At least they're a band that's real. Not like those gimmicky bands that hide behind makeup an silly costumes.
    edit - So I went to listen to this song.... I didn't understand they wrote the depth of "evil" lyrics that a pre-teen would conjour after a few hours of online gaming. my apologies
