Creatures 2 was the first thing I thought of when you mentioned snow effects in prev video, the space was so well animated with large/little, fast/small flakes. Creatures 2 had a unique cheat activation where you lick your finger and touch joystick port 1, would be cool to see an explanation for what's going on (port1 sharing some lines with keyboard controller)
If I recall correctly, using a 1351 mouse in port 1 and moving it around would activate the cheat mode. The mouse uses the analog-to-digital converter in the SID. Rubbing the port would also produce "mouse like" signals. The game appears to be detecting those and activating the cheat based on that.
Great video as usual. I've looked into installing ICU64 but I cannot find information on how to use it with Linux. I compile/build VICE directly but it seems ICU64 is Windows only. I suppose I could get VICE running under Wine but that sounds scary. lol
Thanks for the follow-up and validation of the technique 👍.
@@retro_noix happy to :)
As well as the snow, the sprite colour switching was also a nice effect!
This is the snow effect that I remember being impressed by. Good ole 64!
Yeah, char based animation can be quite good when used well.
I remember the diary bragging about some insane number of slow flakes being animated on screen.

@@MartinPiper6502I remember jiggling the joystick 255 times in the title screen in creatures.

Unfortunately the version of ICU64 I use doesn't seem to be available anymore. Maybe the author will make it available again.
@@MartinPiper6502 explains why I couldn't find it. lol
