    honestly after hearing the A sample, the B sounded (to me of course) like havin a blanket in front of the speakers

    • @countveles
      @countveles 3 года назад

      not that much... they are pretty similar, but indeed the A one sounds a little bit more muffled and a little bit less gainny. I found the A one brighter than the B one.

    I preferred the Ceriatone. Less low end, tighter mids, rounder highs. :-)

      John Guffey I thought it sounded good with some of the riffs, and the 800 was better for some others.

    13:58 Refreshing to hear Jealous Again in an amp shootout video. I feel like punk rock is great to play during amp demos to get an idea of how the tone sounds, and you did a really good job at playing a variety of things to capture the tone of the amps. That being said, I personally preferred the roar of the Marshall. But dang, anything 800 related with the pre and master on 10 is just THE SOUND.

    I preferred the balanced smoothness of the Marshall, the Ceriatone had that midrange cone-y sound.

    I liked amp "A" the most. It sounded tighter.

  • @Skoora
    @Skoora 3 года назад +4

    Definitely prefer Amp A. Amp B has a cocked midrange quality I have a feeling might not Eq out. So looks like in this instance I prefer the Ceriatone. But you could put two 800’s together like this and hear the same and sometimes greater differences.

    • @qua7771
      @qua7771 2 года назад

      Yep.
      It seems amp companies use whatever brand of parts are available at the time, and change things when they feel the need. Plus some components have a wide tolerance (+/- 20), and there are a lot of them. Plus values seem to drift over time.
      I also picked amp A. I thought it sounded clearer, less muffled.

    • @andrewwest7875

      I liked Amp A better as well. It sounded more hot-rodded 1959 than JCM 800, which is A okay with me.

  • @Millo1868
    @Millo1868 6 лет назад +9

    If A is the Ceriatone I think for the most part we MIGHT be listening to the difference between a 2204 vs 2203. Running a 2203 at 50 watts is NOT the same as playing through a 2204.

    • @lespaul667
      @lespaul667 5 лет назад +1

      Yes, a 2203 and 2204 have a few other differences than 2 output tubes, the Drake transformers in the 2204 actually run at a higher plate voltage than a 2203's Dagnalls, the output transformers sound different, and there's a few parts values that are different on the PCB. I prefer a 2204 over a 2203 any day.

  • @lespaul667
    @lespaul667 Год назад +1

    B is the Marshall.
    PS-a 2203 with 2 tubes is NOT a 2204-
    First off a 2204 uses Drakes. Also, a voltage dropping circuit in the first gain stage was left out on the 2204 while left in on the 2203-
    A 2204 has more gain because of this, and it’s Drake transformers.

    Well shit! STOKED to see that A=Ceriatone. I have had a number of them and I like them quite a lot. I currently have a TMB 33w unit from Nik and I prefer it for clean/cleanish. There is a C 2204 in my area for $800 right now. I want to jump on it.

  • @THUNDERWORX

    I guessed right. I would know that feedback whistle of the Marshall anywhere. They both sounded great, but there is a frequency boost in the Marshall that is not in the Ceriatone, and it seems to be the very frequency that feeds back all the time with my Marshalls. They were very close, but I thought the Ceriatone sounded better.

  • @OuchMyHooves
    @OuchMyHooves 3 года назад +1

    Those are pretty damn close! The only way I could tell each one apart is because of the JCM's feedback not being as present and loud, which is most likely because of the age of the electronics which can be replaced easily.

      @@ScottRadkeMusic I got the kit with assembly package which is everything put together except for the transformers. Before I learn the results I’m going to post: amp A has got this upper midrange quack and openness that’s a bit more hot rodded plexi/evh, while amp B had this lower mid girth and at times a brutal hm2 kind of roar on the extreme sounds. I’d be happy with either.

  • @michaelnachoescamilla6241
    @michaelnachoescamilla6241 4 года назад +1

    I’m at 4:24 and I like A better. It sounds more familiar in terms of upper mid bite to me. I think A is the Marshall. That said, I think amps sound and feel best when transformers and tubes are matched evenly. I have had a number of Superleads throughout the years and I always preferred them with all the tubes in them. My JMP 50 sounded better than any of them if I had pulled 2 tubes. But when all 4 tubes were in those amps... nothing better.

    Hello dude, aré you still preserve your ceriatone?. I just bought a clone Ceriatone JCM 800 2204 amplifier but it's too noisy, it happens that they only bought the kit already assembled completely, except the transformers and placed transformers classic tone but the person who sold it to me placed the power transformer and the output transformer parallel and not in 90 degrees as it should be done, this is what generates a lot of noise by the so called inductance.
    Thank U for your time, saludos desde México.

  • @Albee213

    both sound great, the Ceriatone is a little brighter. Probably due to the tubes being removed from the Marshall giving it a darker sound.

    I knew amp A sounded alot more like the 4010 that I owned than amp B. The mid bump was lower and made the distortion more grainy on B, and the chug chug palm mute was totally gone so those lower values are cut off.

  • @usernameihavechosen289

    More intelligibility in the Ceriatone, 100w amps are not performing correctly with two tubes pulled though. There used to be a thread at Marshallforum somewhere, a tech guy explained the circuit just goes haywire in a certain chain of events due to transformer being oversized.

    So now that ceriatone amp prices have shot up close to vintage amp prices, what’s the new company making good amps for cheap? The market needs more competition to keep prices low. I know the wangs amps are still cheap, but they use cheap components.

    Weird you were getting feedback standing right next to a domed Marshall!?! 😂
    I know the 800 is a master volume head, but has anybody ever done a ppimv on an 800?

    • @CheapshotBonanza

      I had a JCM800 2204 and I modded it with a ppimv. I didn´t really like it. I always felt like it took something away from my tone. I tought it sounded much better (and louder :P ) without the ppimv engaged. But it was useful at gigs when the soundguy wanted me to turn it down.

    100 Watt in person will sound bigger, 50 Watt might sound better recorded, less bass and more mid focused. Both sound great though. A 50 watt jmp 2204 is my amp of choice. I know it's an old video but what we're the speakers in the cab?

  • @vpsaxman

    Ceriatone better!! More balanced and clear. But also the Ceri is based of the 2204 which is quite differant from 2203 especially later ones from later 80s. That would be a better test if you had a real later 80s 2204

    The Ceriatone sounds more like a JMP instead of JCM. I think it's a JMP 2204 clone. That explains the difference in tone, Marshall JMP doesn't sound as compressed as a JCM.

    • @vacuumchamberpeanutgallery7055
      @vacuumchamberpeanutgallery7055 5 лет назад +2

      im about to build one and i believe you're correct. the ceritone 2204 is the JMP late 70s circuit just prior to the JCM800 where the cascaded gain stage has diode clipping added. The JMP sounds more raw and a little sweeter the 800 is a bit more wooly and has slightly less gain. JMP is the quintessential master volume rock tone IMO. my ceriatone 2204 kit arrives tomorrow im putting a metro effects loop in it too can't wait!!

    • @calebkey2050
      @calebkey2050 4 года назад

      JMP and early JCM’s (like this one) had 100% identical circuits, same PCBs and everything. The only difference is cosmetics. Where things start to change a bit is in the late ‘83 to early ‘84 era cap and transformer changes. The Ceriatone 2204’s closest Marshall relative would be an 83-84 JCM, the JMP and early JCM 2204’s have lower voltages (~390v vs. ~450v)

    2204 sounds more hifi. I wonder if the tone stack is slightly different with the marshall- you could prob get *slightly* closer if you were looking to match by tweaking mid and treble on 2203 - but ceriatone is def sweet sounding

    I could hear the JCM800 immediately. Haha. Has that bark and voice none can copy 100%. They both sounded good though. If someone wanted a different voice of JCM800 then they would be well served with a ceriatone. Although nothing comes close to the 800 in my opinion. But it helps when you own a JCM800, as I have a 1982 JCM800 and play it through a 1990 1960b.

    It's not a Marshall. It's a Ceriatone. So why did you put a "Marshall" on it? If you want a Marshall pay the entry fee.
    Things to note: Three decibels is not the only advantage of 100 watts. And headroom isn't just about louder clean. Read the above link.
    Amplifier components degrade over time. Unless there's a lot of new stuff inside that '82, it's not a fair comparison.
