  • Flat plane carvings by Trygg, Gunnarsson and one unidentified carver purchased from a thrift store. The simplicity and complexity of these vintage flat plane carvings are truly amazing. In this video I share what I have learned about these carvings.

Absolutely wonderful carvings. Thankyou so much for sharing. The little guy was carved the year I was born.

I sometimes just look closely at these carvings and marvel at the skill and artistry of the makers. Still don’t know who carved the little guy.

The Gunnarsson alone is a tremendous fine at a thrift store ..they are rare ..Somewhere I have seen that asian carving .and when I saw it ..He did have a fishing pole in his hand and the fishing pole went up in the air and bent backwards and the hook of the fishing pole was in the seat of his pants in the back ...I know the clothes dont look right ..But I do believe that was the way he was ..As far as the artist .. Iam not so sure of that ..great find Jack

As always, I appreciate your expertise Gene. The information about the fishing pole is very helpful. I hope I can find out who the carver was someday. Thanks Gene!

I'm wondering since the style of the eyes are similar could that be a CO Trygg also. I would guess that whoever brought those to the thrift shop maybe had all three.

Hi Ron! I agree, I'm pretty sure all three carvings were from the same donor. As you mentioned, the eyes are carved very similar to the Trygg carving. Gene Messer said that some Trygg carvings were of Asian figures so maybe it is a Trygg.
