My tip for starching: I find the starch soaks into the fabric better and flakes less if I spray the wrong side because the inks used to print fabric can repel moisture.

I started starching my fabric about 6 months ago. I found it really cuts down on the fraying.
I agree, especially for quilt alongs (or projects in general) that can take months and be moved around multiple times before being sewn up
