I am thankful for all the hours I've spent sleeping...Also do you guys ever have those awesome dreams that end before you finish them and you just spend rest of day like I wonder how it ended
Well, I got hurt in my foot.. and I was at bedrest for about a week, skipped school, watched movies, did practically nothing.. Aah..enjoyed myself.. 😆😁😁
I once was drowned in a pool by a person I thought was my friend and I'm thankful that I learnt that not everyone is my friend and that I have to be careful of who I'm around.
I grew up as a sick kid, constantly in and out of the hospital. It’s weird to think that some people have never had any experiences that I grew up considering normal. For me getting pulled out of an MRI “coding” halfway through and then going back in to finish the imaging was just another weird day. I can’t even tell you how many MRIs I’ve had. It blows my mind sometimes how vastly different all of our lives are.
@@anthonythomas i was hoping to take it this fall but with my gap year tragedy that is 2020 ( I was supposed to be shadowing and volunteering all year :( ) I think I'm going to wait to schedule it until the spring! But I'm still keeping up with my studying routine! What about you? Is it soon? We got this! :)
I’m thankful for my history of drug and eventually heroin addiction. Even with over 8 years clean, I’m still dealing with the aftermath of my addiction. At the time I was using, I was struggling with severe mental illness as a result of what I can now recognize as multiple childhood traumas. I really do believe that had I not made the fateful choice to begin using drugs, chances are I wouldn’t be here today. It wasn’t a GOOD coping skill by any means, but I didn’t have adequate support, so I did what I had to, to survive the brain that was trying to kill me. My time using and my eventual recovery taught me so much about the experiences of people different from me. I was a 20 year old white girl from the ‘burbs, and I ended up at a (less than stellar) methadone clinic in west Philadelphia. I don’t think I would be the person I am today without the experiences that came from that. I learned how to connect with people on a human level. I learned about the depths of sorrow. I became a more compassionate person. It was how I learned that I belong in the mental health field, and the beginning of my dream to work as a counselor. My experience with addiction was destructive, permanently affecting, and full of pain and torment. But it has also made me a better person. It matured me, it gave me skills I didn’t have before, and it taught me how to connect with people and feel compassion for them. Your channel has inspired me to not give up on my dream of becoming a counselor, Rachel. Watching your journey has helped me begin working to find the confidence to attempt college again after many years away. Thank you so much for what you are doing, you’re a light in this world and you’re doing so much good. Wishing you a speedy recovery, and I can’t wait to see where your journey takes you. I hope you will keep allowing us all the privilege to share it with you in this way.
Wow. Thank you for sharing your experience. Life shows us lessons in really strange ways. I’m proud of you for overcoming your addiction and your perseverance to keep moving forward. It says so much about your character. 💕 I can’t wait to hear about all of your accomplishments in this lifetime.
I love that you mentioned experiencing things that you'll eventually recommend for your patients. I'm in nursing school right now, but when I was getting my CNA license my instructor had each student lay on a bed pan for 5 minutes (fully clothed). She explained to us that it was one thing to know that you have to be timely with a patient on a bed pan, but it is another to experience even some of the discomfort people feel when using one. It really opened my eyes, and when I got my first CNA job all new hires had to use a VR-like dementia simulator. These experiences allowed me to gain even more empathy for my patients and I'm so glad other health care workers are considering things like this! I hope your pain ends soon and thank you for sharing these videos!!
Please talk more about the “science” behind the stuff your experiencing or like showing us what you are studying like when you talked to us about gyno and explained the nerve in your arm to us🥰 I find it super interesting 🤩
You are totally right, an injury makes you a more empathetic practitioner. I’ve had both shoulder and knee injuries and subsequent surgeries and work in physical therapy. 1) Your pain is always valid 2) grocery hack: get pre chopped veggies, pre shredded cheese, etc. 3) if you don’t already have a detachable shower head get one- it will be your best friend. 4) get a referral for PT ASAP!! They can help you right now with swelling, pain management modalities, prehabing other supportive muscles in the shoulder girdle. They wouldn’t want to stretch or do anything too provocative until MRI results are back and signed off by Orthopedist. Subscribing to follow. You got this girl!!
Oh my gosh!! I would freakin love you and Dr. Mike doing a collab! I watch all of your videos and his cause your content is so great! I’m praying for a speedy recovery for your arm! God bless!
I've been dreaming of becoming a physician since I was a kid. I graduated high school last year and failed a few subjects due to depression. It's important to mention that I'm from Sweden and we have a test that is like the MCAT, called the HP and It's a way to get into any education that you want. I fixed my subjects and officially graduated high school and got my documents ready. The only thing left is to get at least 1.6 of 2.0 on the test, tbh it's pretty time-consuming. A few weeks ago I got in touch with an old friend who got into physiotherapy and for the first time, I realized that it had all the things that I like in Med school. I'm confused and a bit lost but I feel like I found something that suits me better. Anyone with similar stories?
Yes actually! It’s not entirely the same, but it’s still a pretty similar experience. I’m currently a high school senior, but here (in the states) your hardest and most important year is usually your junior (11th grade) year. I suffered a few losses and missed a lot of school due to depression. However, I used the year to take time to focus more on what I wish to do with life. For a very long time I wanted to study medicine. And although I missed a lot of school I finished with a 3.6 GPA.. But after deciding to open my own home bakery, I realized how much I enjoyed baking as well as teaching/ helping to others. I’ve decided to go to school for culinary arts.. and maybe later in life I’ll study psychology. (:
In the beginning of this year I got into a car accident, not my fault, that fractured my radius on my dominant hand and required me to get surgery to have a metal plate in my wrist. I went through a whirlwind of emotions from being excited to getting my first ever surgery because science is cool, but being saddened because I did not know how I was going to pass my final college semester not being able to write for at least 1.5 months. I ended up graduating, with the help of my wonder friends, and becoming a clinical assistant/medical assistant at the Orthopedic clinic that did my surgery. Life definitely sucked at the beginning, but some how I'm now racking up clinical hours for my med school application. Stay strong and I hope you have a healthy healing process!
Rachel: "please do not make the mistake I did" Me, someone who was only in a tumbling class for a year ten years ago trying to do a backbend just now: "what"
Literally started crying when you were singing and said “make it out in one piece, or maybe two.” I’m applying to medical school and would love to practice in California and have been watching your vlogs since before you started med school. I feel such a connection to you, like we’re besties, and you inspire me to keep going. Even my husband asked this morning“how’s Rachel’s arm?” 🥺❤️ love ya girl! Okay byyyye
Hi! I am a psychiatry resident. I am so sorry for your injury. Can’t imagine the stress of managing both medical school, covid, and a physical injury. I appreciate your discussion on locus of control. One thought- there can be some utility in both acknowledging the control you have in the situation and acknowledging the chance or randomness of the event. The idea is that you can still feel empowered to learn from the event but don’t end up being overwhelmed in self- blame or guilt for the event happening. I feel like you are doing this intuitively by reflecting that the event could be both internalized and externalized. Hope you are healing well!
Hi Rachel, sorry for what happened to you, just continue to be strong and keep your eye into your goals and make your dreams come true. Make sure you follow up on your orthopedic appointment to monitor your arm.you are a blessing and inspiration for us. God bless you so much and get better.
I've been loving your videos recently as well as your positivity. You truly are an inspiration to me, as I am a pre-med student. I'm wishing you a fast recovery with your arm!
Rachel. I feel for you. Your arm looks so sore and I can only imagine the pain you are experiencing. But nice to hear that you have found some positive aspects of this incident. You will have the patient view on this situation. I wish you a speedy recovery. Xx❤️
Rachel, I hope you are doing better, and hope to see you make a speedy recovery! 🤗 I have to say, I don't normally like to watch Med student vlogs, but I can't stop watching your videos! Really, well done! I admire your incredible work ethic - keep it up! 🤗
I have been down lately cuz I failed my year 1 medical exam bs by watching ur video I am trying to see the bright side even thought I still don’t know it But it makes me happy every time I watch ur videos Thank you
hmm something I'm thankful for that taught me a valuable lesson: bombing Orgo 1. It taught me so much that I aced Orgo 2... I learned to say no "now" so I can say yes "later" and my academic performance sky-rocketed. I hope you heal well and soon!
Hi Rachel, i hope the doctor called you. I wist you have less pain. Thanks for the vid. respect that you doing so much: studying, cooking, arm in a sling, making us a a part of your life, laughing with Dr Mike, we laughing with you 😉 thanks and a lot of best wishes
I was literallyyyyy studying locus of control for my MCAT and watched this video as a break and since you mentioned it i won't forget it now. Thank u for ur service
Oh my goodness, Rachel, after your MRI I was crying with you! I’m so sorry you’re in so much pain. My heart and prayers go out to you and I hope you’re doing a lot better now. 😢
Hi Rachel!!! I love u so much and I hope ur arm gets better as soon as possible. ❤️ thank you for making ur channel a safe place to come to during these scary and unimaginable times!!!
You are such an amazingly kind person, thank you for making videos that brighten my day. You continuously inspire me to keep working hard, and I hope your arm heals soon!! ❤️
I tore the lateral collateral ligament of my elbow and recently got reconstructive surgery! Its definitely a difficult process but I got through it and so will you!
Watching this fairly late but right after I had a brain MRI. I’ve had an MRI before (but on my ankle so I’ve never gone head first before now). I feel you with people saying it’s terrifying! My mom is a cancer survivor so she’s had almost every scan possible and even she told me it would probably be scary going head first. I didn’t think it was all that bad but I’m glad I’ve had the experience. I’m very glad that with both of my MRI experiences I never had to be in a painful position. I’m sorry that had to have been horrible :(
Hope your healing process is going okay! Sending lots of thoughts of comfort and healing your way!! 🥺❤️ On the bright side, it’s a good potential story to share with future patients! Stay strong, you’re a RED ANT!!! ☺️🐜
I just watched 8 of your latest videos in one sitting(x1.25), and it is really hard to see you in pain after being optimistic for long enough. Hope you get better soon. Much love
i got an MRI a couple of months ago. unlike other’s experience, i felt sooo relaxed lmao. i did feel uncomfortable because you cant move and i felt like i kept moving but it was fine :))
Would love if you made a video about your undergrad experience (switching from PT to DO)! Love watching your videos and hope you feel better super soon 💕
YES The Obstacle is the Way is the BEST book. I started it when we went under 'quarantine' and I absolutely love it and recommend it to literally everyone!!
A lot of things you mentioned at the end, are things that my sister has said to me when I get overwhelmed. It’s good to hear it from others. I have my final next week for the X-ray tech program I’m in and I’m so stressed 😩. But like you said, take control of it which I’m doing by studying and managing my time wisely.
My little brother tore his medial ligament when he was 7 and it took the doctors a while to figure out what was wrong with it just by X-rays. They put a long medal pin in it to hold the bones together so it could heal. It took like 2 months to heal in cast and 5 weeks of pt.
Heyy I hope you get well soon also I recommend you use public transport till you get your arm fixed... kinda got scared at the fact you were driving with that arm so be careful❤️
i stg, rachel is literally just another one of my friends... ik that u dont know anything about me but i feel like i know you so well! your vids bring me so much happiness and at the end of every video, i love getting to hear you say "take care of yourself, be kind to yourself, continue to work hard, and all that good stuff" (sometimes i even say it along with you lol). it's cheesy but it's nice to feel like rachel's looking out for me and cheering me on
when my dad was a student at columbia, we participated in a father daughter study in the neurology department, we had to lay in the mri machine for 45 minutes, its actually kind of fun, as long as u dont go in already panicking, that way u avoid feeling trapped Dont know scanning about an injury tho, so sorry for racheee
Don’t worry Rach, I play netball and I recently took an nasty blow to my ankle and the ER was like no fracture, bad sprain you will be fine, I was in constant pain so I had an MRI two weeks later, and whilst I completely ruptured my ATFL and CFL, I had severe bone bruising throughout the entire ankle joint, to the point where if I kept walking, I’d fracture my foot 😒 Hang in there and listen to your body, it tells you things even when the best doctors can’t see it!!
Rachel, I just found your channel and saw your video where you got injured. I cringed. What you said in this vlog about knowing what your patients experience reminded me of the 1991 movie, "The Doctor." I think you should watch it because the ultimate message of that movie is that doctors should understand their patients and what they go through. Also, you are a lovely young lady and have no need to worry about your looks, your beauty comes from within. Take care!
Binged watched all your videos!!... love your honesty and your content.. Inspired from your dedication and hardwork towards your work and studies.. Hope you get well soon.. Lots of love ❤❤
I tripped over my showlace a few weeks ago and tore my ACL out of the tibiahead. SO stupid 🤦🏼♀️ I definitely learned a lesson that day. Hope you get better soon!
I broke my pinky toe after walking into a door frame at full speed in BROAD DAYLIGHT. (and I was watching where I was going. yeah, I have half a brain cell)
I know what you meant by not doing some things due to our ages. I was doing the stocking of the supplies at my job for 7 years before. It mess up my back my arms and should and hip bone till. Due to the stocking. That why i am not doing the stocking at any job.
A year ago I moved from North Carolina to Arizona - made it to New Mexico and outta nowhere my car engine blew up (later found out that it had been leaking oil) Had it towed into the nearest town and found that it would cost $3,500 to replace the bad engine with a salvage. 😒 Long story short, my friends helped me out and loaned me some money so I could get it replaced that same week, since I had limited money in my savings acct. at the time for overnight hotel stays. Grateful for them and really glad my car broke down relatively close to Arizona, rather than in Tennessee or Oklahoma. Life lesson: ALWAYS have money for emergencies, because they can happen at any given time! Also, don’t be afraid to ask people for help - swallow your pride & do it!
Omg I'm wearing the exact same brace as her right now, and the bruises on my arm looked really similar when I injured myself about a month ago. At the beginning of June I completely dislocated my elbow and it was so painful and not fun 😕, I'm still recovering and have a long way to go. Hope you are healing well💖
Omg IAM so sorry....hope you feel better. I messed up my knee and I have my MRI on Monday 😫 ..and I have an ugly brace as well along with crutches !!!! I hope it nothing!!!
when I was in the first grade i shattered my elbow, during reconstruction my ulnar nerve was completely severed. that was 20 years ago now and just now starting to get temperature sensation back. It sucked i couldnt move my hand esp my ring and pinky finger when i was a kid, and we couldnt afford Physical therapy. I got very angry and bit my own pinky in attempt to feel anything ( i was a dumb 6 year old lol). made it so bad and infected that I almost needed my pinky finger amputated. 6 months after my cast came off i Broke the same hand but didnt know cause I couldnt feel it. 6 weeks later I went back to the dr and he said it was broken and we did another cast. I eventually learned to play the piano, guitar, violin, and cello as my families version of physical therapy. Now im about to start my clinical year of vet school, I have struggled with surgical skills a little because of my lack of sensation but its so rewarding. Im so glad i didnt loose my pinky and Im so glad that I didnt just give up on those 2 fingers ever moving again. my career wouldnt be the same if I had.
I hope you get better soon! 🤍🤍 God bless you I got my first MRI two years ago and it was kind of scary but fun specially when seeing the results and being able to recognize the anatomy.
The lesson you explained at the end of this vlog was well needed as I just tested positive for COVID and I’ve been feeling down mentally and physically:(

YES YES
I gonna do it after watching this 😂

ur energy is so positive and i know ur gonna be an AMAZING doctor !! ( this ain’t it )
i got an MRI a couple of months ago. unlike other’s experience, i felt sooo relaxed lmao. i did feel uncomfortable because you cant move and i felt like i kept moving but it was fine :))
Hang in there!! The only things you can control in life are your attitude and effort (and you've got a positive spin on both already)!!! ❤️
wouldnt it be hard to find a comfortable sleeping position without your hand hurting?
love you rachel!
You make the perfect best friend! The transition was perfect. I like your healthy food choices!
Your positivity is so refreshing❤️❤️
My little brother tore his medial ligament when he was 7 and it took the doctors a while to figure out what was wrong with it just by X-rays. They put a long medal pin in it to hold the bones together so it could heal. It took like 2 months to heal in cast and 5 weeks of pt.
Hope you start to feel better soon Rachel.
Heyy I hope you get well soon also I recommend you use public transport till you get your arm fixed... kinda got scared at the fact you were driving with that arm so be careful❤️
I hope you get well soon Rach
i stg, rachel is literally just another one of my friends... ik that u dont know anything about me but i feel like i know you so well! your vids bring me so much happiness and at the end of every video, i love getting to hear you say "take care of yourself, be kind to yourself, continue to work hard, and all that good stuff" (sometimes i even say it along with you lol). it's cheesy but it's nice to feel like rachel's looking out for me and cheering me on
Awh I love you. Thanks for writing this.
@@RachelSouthard awh omg of course! i love u so freaking much
When I am bored I watch my lectures on tv..... It's really interesting to see lectures on big screen...
Your little song made me giggle! :) So proud of you for staying positive during this bump in the road, you’ve got this!!
You are soo simple and positive... having always a good health ahead...
We love you Rachel 💛 You're gonna be okay 🙂
Hope for a speedy recovery!!
Rachel I’m so sorry you are going though this.♥️ stay strong.
I had the same brace for my knee when i dislocated my knee i had to wear that thing for 6 weeks😓
when my dad was a student at columbia, we participated in a father daughter study in the neurology department, we had to lay in the mri machine for 45 minutes, its actually kind of fun, as long as u dont go in already panicking, that way u avoid feeling trapped
Dont know scanning about an injury tho, so sorry for racheee
This ain’t it sis 😫 but Dr. Mike IS IT!
HE IS IT
Hello Rachel, I hope you get better soon!
Holy moly!! Hope you’re doing okay!
Take care!
Try tiger balm extra strength rub. But has a strong sent. Couple of store I might find it at Walmart or an Asian store.
I know this is a bit sick, but this is pretty interesting. Thanks for sharing this part of the healing process.
Wishing you a speedy recovery, take care ✌️god bless you ✨& all the best ♥️

I tripped over my showlace a few weeks ago and tore my ACL out of the tibiahead. SO stupid 🤦🏼♀️ I definitely learned a lesson that day. Hope you get better soon!
I broke my pinky toe after walking into a door frame at full speed in BROAD DAYLIGHT. (and I was watching where I was going. yeah, I have half a brain cell)
Alisha Outch!!!
Hope you are healing well💖
twins!!
Nowadays you become quite philosophical ,I think and wishing a speedy recovery
I've been trying to make my vlogs more meaningful :) i want people to learn from them.

I love you woman. I LOVE THE HERD. You inspire me everyday
You’re such an inspiration Rachel ❤️
when I was in the first grade i shattered my elbow, during reconstruction my ulnar nerve was completely severed. that was 20 years ago now and just now starting to get temperature sensation back.
I love your headband! So cute. Where did you get it? 😍
Hi, Racheal , hope your arm is getting soon well .Take care of yourself well. btw love all of your video
A crazy fan of you from Malaysia.
I hope you get better soon! 🤍🤍 God bless you
I got my first MRI two years ago and it was kind of scary but fun specially when seeing the results and being able to recognize the anatomy.
The lesson you explained at the end of this vlog was well needed as I just tested positive for COVID and I’ve been feeling down mentally and physically:(
