I don't have to relate to a character based off of "relatable" physical attributes like these wildebeests. Unless I'm playing as a creature, I just don't want ugly on my screen.
Image that. 20 years ago we sat in front of the character creation screen for hours to make the polygon abomination resemble vaguely a hot chick while those ugly npcs just pressed the random button and said: wow that looks just like me. Gaming is perfect! But 20 years into the future and gamers where like: fuck I want to marry this model. But they were like: wtf I'm not represented anymore :((( how do we go back?
Worst argument I hear from people is "it's for realism, most people in real life aren't models." Well its also a videogame, and videogames are supposed to be fun. I don't care about realism if it makes the game less fun. Playing as ugly characters makes games less fun.
As a straight man I always want to play as a handsome male character such as Arthur Morgan who looks like Brad Pitt or beautiful female characters such as Jill Valentine :) Attractive characters make us love them more and every time I play a game where I can customize a character, I make them always look good. If I can customize a male, I’ll make him look like Thor and if I make a female one, I’ll customize her to look like Helen of Troy. Looks matter and unattractiveness for the sake of wokeness never works!
Same here, I don't like playing games with characters that look hideous. The reason why, it's because I have to stare at that character for hours and it's distracting. I usually play games that have character customization like mmorpg games.

As a fellow girl gamer I'm here to back up what Melonie is saying. I always choose an attractive, fit girl character to play if it's available. The only people who want to look ugly, fat or "see themselves" in their game are narcissistic or activists or both lol

As a woman, when I can create a female character in a game I make her as cute/beautiful as I can. I love my elf-like woman in Final Fantasy 14 who looks nothing like me. I tried making her in Elden Ring and failed though, lol.

The first time I noticed uggofication in games was Mass Effect: Andromeda. The male model looks like the person the character was modelled off of. The female looked like the whole ugly tree hit her. You can thank Anita Sarkeesian for this phenomenon.
I first noticed it in Dragon Age Inquisition. I think DAI might have actually been the first woke game too if I look back at it, at least the first really noticeable one.
You can blame the Frost Engine and intern game designers and developers for that. The people in Montreal had no idea what they were doing in every single position. The Edmonton crew were supposed to be given a skeleton crew to fix the game but EA told them to pull people off of it and put them on Anthem instead.

Same here! I love seeing beautiful designed characters both male and female! Heck, I spent hours creating a male character in Elden Ring because I wanted to play as a guy! it's super fun and satisfying seeing your effort in the final stage 😌
I am a guy and I always try to make my female character in Destiny as hot as possible. I dont want to be stuck with ugly male/female creations all game because you cant change how you look after that 😢

Very noticable in remakes where the advanced graphics are used to make the characters look ugly. In Diablo 2 Resurrected, an overlay to the old game made twenty years later the characters are made to look twenty years older...

Exactly characters are just ideas. They should represent a part of you or quality you'd like to have. Making them nice to look at is the icing on the cake.
I have yet to encounter a girlfriend or woman in general that deliberately chooses unattractive characters in games. And I've been gaming since the 90's. Whether it's Tomb Raider, Sims, MMOs or Jrpgs, they all enjoy attractive characters without exception. Game devs and publishers keep pandering to literally no one who's part of the target audience. Them eyeballing that ESG score from Blackrock will backfire hard in the coming years. People are starting to get really, really sick of that political nonsense.

I'm the same way. I'm a guy who generally likes to create female characters in MMOs n stuff. I like cute girls so I like to make a cute female character, because it's simply eye candy, and I don't believe there's anything inherently wrong with that. I usually make a male character if it's an RPG with Romance because I might really like a character of "waifu" material. I rarely play as "myself" in games.

I don't think there's anything wrong with making "eye candy" characters either. I think there is something absolutely and completely wrong with responding to the trailer that was put out with exclusive feedback on the unattractiveness of the character. 1. That's just simply not what the trailer (or Fable) is about. 2. Female player characters in Fable have been traditionally beefcakes.

The feel in general seemed to point that way when you see other characters. But after seeing the controversy (first saw it from HeelvsBabyFace from my recommended), the information about this "self insert" thing, and the general state of ESG plaguing western mainstream AAA gaming, recent cases of female leads need to be "uglified" so they aren't "objectified," I can't rule out the possibility of the controversy being warranted.

I'm a straight woman, but 99% of the time I prefer playing as male characters. And I always make my male characters as attractive and handsome as possible. And the rare times I play a woman, I make her sexy and powerful. I'm glad to see more people speaking out against this worrying trend.
The only attractive protag and characters in games are now only in japanese games especially Capcom, look at Leon in RE4 remake and Claire, look at Vergil in DMC5, Venom Snake and Quiet in MGSV, look at the characters in the new Street fighters, they are feminine, attractive and handsome for the men. I tried to play Rise of Tomb Raider, and Lara was flat, uninteresting, boring writing and story, gameplay was decent i guess, but i never finished that game despite of getting it free on epicgames. the only memorable american made games i can think of with handsome/attractive characters are Red Dead 2, Arthur morgan, Dutch are so handsome. American companies love to bend their knees to woke wishes that the end result really just deter their actual target audience the gamers from actually enjoying, remember and appreciate potential franchises and Ips they have.

I was young and this concept terrified me.

Yeah as a guy I want to play an action type game with a ripped character that looks like he can actually mess stuff up rather than some feminine dude that looks like he wouldn't step on a spider. There needs to be a medium between what we want to play in a fantasy world and "uglify all games" it puts me off a lot of triple a titles that don't have body mod replacers and face morphs to fix the horrible looking character designs. I don't care about sexy but not every guy looks like a computer nerd and not every woman looks like a Neanderthal male.

In some cases, no makeup actually looks more beautiful. Not IRL example but I think Ashley Williams is a good one. She has no makeup on and her hair is tied, she truly looks and feels like a soldier in the first two Mass Effect games. In the third game though, her hair is down and she wears makeup. Well, I'm not saying that it looks bad, but it feels out of character.

Not entirely. Japanese games often got our back. Nioh 2? You can make drop-dead beautiful characters. Pokemon and Zelda games are full of hansom/pretty characters with fantastic designs. There's other recent-ish titles I can think of, but none of them are American-made games. Maybe I'm missing one or two.
There's always that one face option in every game with a character that no player uses because it's hideous. It's like they went with that. Then used the sliders to make it uglier.

My sister was playing Diablo 4 with us and she really wanted to play Druid and when she selected the character she was so let down by the look of Blizzards female Druid character, she completely changed her mind on that class all together and forced to choose another class just because of the look. Every company is doing this now and it really sucks when your forced to play a character that’s ugly! Honestly just let us customize and be done with it, if we want a heavy look that let us decide on that, if we want a certain skin color let us decide what color, I don’t know what’s so hard about that..?

Hey now, that "ugly dude" is Richard Ayoade, a British nerd, actor, filmmaker and comedian. They actually got his likeness spot on (I thought it was a live recording of him at first glance). Which is a good thing as they didn't change his appearance at all to make him uglier, even if you don't find him attractive. The women however they definitely turned it way up on the "masculine" scale.

When I play as a dude, I expect him to be physically fit so I can aspire to what he looks like and when I play a gal in a game, I expect to her to be beautiful and fair. It's so true. For me it's also very important to play for an attractive character. In some games, if armour looks ugly, but has better stats, I'm not wearing it, cause then my character looks ugly :D But, to be honest, if the game is good, I probably won't care if the character is good looking or not, but it would definitely enhance the experience. Also, sometimes I just love ugly characters. Witcher 3 NPCs are not pretty most of the time, but because of it they look unique and like people I could meet in my village. So I guess, having characters representing how really people look adds to the game, but it so much nicer when my character looks good.
I agree! I am a woman...and whenever I play a game where I can customize my character, I may spend upwards of 30 minutes tweaking the face and body to get her to exactly what I want. And I want her to be attractive! If the characters are ugly, I'm less likely to want to play the game in the first place.
Yeah i can spend 1 hour to customize and 30 mins to pick up a good name to be perfect. sadly it becomes harder to create any decent looking protagonist lately (i'm looking at your diablo 4 among others), if u like that kind of games try CODE VEIN, souls game with tons of way to make a cute character :)
This is why I love character creation. I can spend time to create a character that I find appealing, not the delves self insert or a non appealing character.
Don't take it for granted. New games are literally pushing limits in the body slider. For instance if you make the chest bigger, so are the shoulders in order to cut sensuality. Most new AAA games are pushing this type of boundaries on purpose. Don't give them an inch.

Ya you can't count on that. In Mass Effect Andromeda in 2017 they had a day one ugly patch. It was also impossible to make an attractive female character at launch.

We can never have a decent medium. You can make female videogame characters beautiful without being flawless. You can also make her more relatable looking without making her unappealing looking.
When I create a male character I like to create him to my likeness but with more muscles. Basically me but better. I feel that it adds to the immersion rather than playing another character entirely. I totally agree with the attraction part though.
I’m a female and I love video games. The first real game I played was Skyrim, and after playing for 10 minutes, I exited the game and later figured out how to download mods to make my character prettier. I like being pretty! To this day it’s still my favorite game, but I hate playing without mods 😂. I tried playing vanilla once a while ago, and I was like “why is everything so ugly?”

Over the past couple years, many have been trying to popularize being overweight and not having a generally appealing appearance as attractive. Now they are forcing this appearance on us and they don’t understand what is attractive such as having a symmetrical face which helps to sell the product through marketing. If I have to look at a character for a whole game, I want that character to be attractive! My Skyrim character is normally a female that I try to make as pretty as Bethesda games let me (she is currently wearing the seducers armor, which is basically lingerie lol). I make my male characters attractive too! Or I like to make them cool/cute looking if they aren’t human. I don’t want my characters to be ugly or look like me. I want to escape into another world as a different character. You are 100% correct, the more women who make games the more they make ugly and/or generic bland characters. It's very hard to find something like that in western-made games because modern western games make nothing but ugly female characters and the Asian characters they make are hideous. Complete opposite of Japanese, Chinese or Korean game makers, because they make very attractive-looking characters with both Asian and Western looks. The only recent western game I can think of with a decent character creator is Cyberpunk 2077 (mods make it WAY better, though).
Never understood the whole "a character needs to be relatable to be a good character" thing. Almost nothing i play or watch has characters that are relatable to me. I couldn't even think of one game or movie where i can relate to a character. Aside from stuff every one can relate to like culture and stuff like that.
I remember the original fables, they were fun and one of the few Xbox exclusives that were out there. I also noticed that Lionhead Studios, the creators of fable are gone! I laughed so hard at the Fable trailer. Companies are supoosed to put their best foot forward, and first impressions are important. The devs really looked at that character and said, "Yep! She'll be the face of our debut!" Lol
I think the majority of people make characters that aren't themselves. Most people that make characters that look like themselves want to inset themselves as the character, while on the other hand people that make their own character might want create a story around said character. I think it comes down to imagination.

Yea, Im definitely not buying Fable if that's what the main character is going to end up looking like. It's not even cause of some protest, though Im down for that too. I just don't want to play as that ugly ass character. The protest, or vote with your wallet thing, is just in addition to. And, I hope many people follow suit. They shit on us when we gave feedback for Saints Row and Battlefield, and look how that turned out. We got the power. More people just need to check their hype to play something for their principles.
If there is no character creator or more red flags reveal themselves then don't give them your money. Instead buy Asian / Eastern European games where all the woke garbage just doesn't exist like it does here.
I'm a straight male, but I almost always play as an attractive female, if given a choice. If I'm going to be running around with a character for 20+ hours, I don't want them to be ugly. I play games to escape the real world; not to see myself. I don't mind the supporting characters being average or ugly, but the main characters, male or female, are preferred as appealing.

Look, I used to play a lot of MMORPGs... almost always I played "small" race characters (gnomes, halflings, dwarves, etc). Multiple reasons, one being that a shorter character seems to move faster. But then I played "Tera", which had A) the most attractive models, male and female, of any MMO I'd played to that point and B) doesn't have miniature classes. for a long while I played male characters because... male. But then I realized that the primary point of view was from behind the character (normally I play 1st person)... and if I'm going to have to look at my character the whole game... I'm looking at a beautiful female. And replaced all my characters with female models. And I don't care what people think. I was playing for _my_ enjoyment. That's what I enjoyed.

The first time I noticed uggofication in games was Mass Effect: Andromeda. The male model looks like the person the character was modelled off of. The female looked like the whole ugly tree hit her. You can thank Anita Sarkeesian for this phenomenon.

Its no secret that women just don't play games as much as men, and definately not the games with majorly obscene designs for female characters, i wouldn't be surprised if games had some effect, but reality is far more harmful than fictional games and seeing real women online being praised by thousands if not millions for their looks is a far different scenario than playing a videogame with attractive or unrealistic characters, the social aspect is diminished heavily for one and to reiterate, they aren't real, and as a human you are able to rationalise that easily whereas real people online are real people, you can't rationalise it as fiction leaving you susceptible to body image issues if you idolise these individuals and buy into the beauty craze of it all.

I have yet to encounter a girlfriend or woman in general that deliberately chooses unattractive characters in games. And I've been gaming since the 90's.
Whether it's Tomb Raider, Sims, MMOs or Jrpgs, they all enjoy attractive characters without exception.

I'm the same way. I'm a guy who generally likes to create female characters in MMOs n stuff. I like cute girls so I like to make a cute female character, because it's simply eye candy, and I don't believe there's anything inherently wrong with that. I usually make a male character if it's an RPG with Romance because I might really like a character of "waifu" material. I rarely play as "myself" in games.

I don't think there's anything wrong with making "eye candy" characters either. I think there is something absolutely and completely wrong with responding to the trailer that was put out with exclusive feedback on the unattractiveness of the character. 1. That's just simply not what the trailer (or Fable) is about. 2. Female player characters in Fable have been traditionally beefcakes.

I'm a straight woman, but 99% of the time I prefer playing as male characters. And I always make my male characters as attractive and handsome as possible. And the rare times I play a woman, I make her sexy and powerful. I'm glad to see more people speaking out against this worrying trend.

The only attractive protag and characters in games are now only in japanese games especially Capcom, look at Leon in RE4 remake and Claire, look at Vergil in DMC5, Venom Snake and Quiet in MGSV, look at the characters in the new Street fighters, they are feminine, attractive and handsome for the men. I tried to play Rise of Tomb Raider, and Lara was flat, uninteresting, boring writing and story, gameplay was decent i guess, but i never finished that game despite of getting it free on epicgames. the only memorable american made games i can think of with handsome/attractive characters are Red Dead 2, Arthur morgan, Dutch are so handsome. American companies love to bend their knees to woke wishes that the end result really just deter their actual target audience the gamers from actually enjoying, remember and appreciate potential franchises and Ips they have.

But as a straight guy, I stopped playing female characters because I read this story where this guy gets trapped in the game he was playing as a female character and one of his goals was to get back to being a guy again. I was young and this concept terrified me.

Yeah as a guy I want to play an action type game with a ripped character that looks like he can actually mess stuff up rather than some feminine dude that looks like he wouldn't step on a spider. There needs to be a medium between what we want to play in a fantasy world and "uglify all games" it puts me off a lot of triple a titles that don't have body mod replacers and face morphs to fix the horrible looking character designs. I don't care about sexy but not every guy looks like a computer nerd and not every woman looks like a Neanderthal male.

In some cases, no makeup actually looks more beautiful. Not IRL example but I think Ashley Williams is a good one. She has no makeup on and her hair is tied, she truly looks and feels like a soldier in the first two Mass Effect games. In the third game though, her hair is down and she wears makeup. Well, I'm not saying that it looks bad, but it feels out of character.

My sister was playing Diablo 4 with us and she really wanted to play Druid and when she selected the character she was so let down by the look of Blizzards female Druid character, she completely changed her mind on that class all together and forced to choose another class just because of the look. Every company is doing this now and it really sucks when your forced to play a character that’s ugly! Honestly just let us customize and be done with it, if we want a heavy look that let us decide on that, if we want a certain skin color let us decide what color, I don’t know what’s so hard about that..?

It's so true. For me it's also very important to play for an attractive character. In some games, if armour looks ugly, but has better stats, I'm not wearing it, cause then my character looks ugly :D But, to be honest, if the game is good, I probably won't care if the character is good looking or not, but it would definitely enhance the experience. Also, sometimes I just love ugly characters. Witcher 3 NPCs are not pretty most of the time, but because of it they look unique and like people I could meet in my village. So I guess, having characters representing how really people look adds to the game, but it so much nicer when my character looks good.
I agree! I am a woman...and whenever I play a game where I can customize my character, I may spend upwards of 30 minutes tweaking the face and body to get her to exactly what I want. And I want her to be attractive! If the characters are ugly, I'm less likely to want to play the game in the first place.
Yeah i can spend 1 hour to customize and 30 mins to pick up a good name to be perfect. sadly it becomes harder to create any decent looking protagonist lately (i'm looking at your diablo 4 among others), if u like that kind of games try CODE VEIN, souls game with tons of way to make a cute character :)

Don't take it for granted. New games are literally pushing limits in the body slider. For instance if you make the chest bigger, so are the shoulders in order to cut sensuality. Most new AAA games are pushing this type of boundaries on purpose. Don't give them an inch.

We can never have a decent medium. You can make female videogame characters beautiful without being flawless. You can also make her more relatable looking without making her unappealing looking.
When I create a male character I like to create him to my likeness but with more muscles. Basically me but better. I feel that it adds to the immersion rather than playing another character entirely. I totally agree with the attraction part though.
I’m a female and I love video games. The first real game I played was Skyrim, and after playing for 10 minutes, I exited the game and later figured out how to download mods to make my character prettier. I like being pretty!
To this day it’s still my favorite game, but I hate playing without mods 😂. I tried playing vanilla once a while ago, and I was like “why is everything so ugly?”

If I have to look at a character for a whole game, I want that character to be attractive! My Skyrim character is normally a female that I try to make as pretty as Bethesda games let me (she is currently wearing the seducers armor, which is basically lingerie lol). I make my male characters attractive too! Or I like to make them cool/cute looking if they aren’t human. I don’t want my characters to be ugly or look like me. I want to escape into another world as a different character. You are 100% correct, the more women who make games the more they make ugly and/or generic bland characters. It's not just games, I've been noticing this in all forms of entertainment, like you said they don't have to look like something out of a sexual fantasy, but there are different levels of attractiveness that can be used. Again I've noticed in movies and TV shows that more and more actresses look plain and those that are attractive get a downgrade.

It's very hard to find something like that in western-made games because modern western games make nothing but ugly female characters and the Asian characters they make are hideous. Complete opposite of Japanese, Chinese or Korean game makers, because they make very attractive-looking characters with both Asian and Western looks. The only recent western game I can think of with a decent character creator is Cyberpunk 2077 (mods make it WAY better, though).

I laughed so hard at the Fable trailer. Companies are supoosed to put their best foot forward, and first impressions are important. The devs really looked at that character and said, "Yep! She'll be the face of our debut!" Lol

I think the majority of people make characters that aren't themselves. Most people that make characters that look like themselves want to inset themselves as the character, while on the other hand people that make their own character might want create a story around said character. I think it comes down to imagination.

Yea, Im definitely not buying Fable if that's what the main character is going to end up looking like. It's not even cause of some protest, though Im down for that too. I just don't want to play as that ugly ass character.
The protest, or vote with your wallet thing, is just in addition to. And, I hope many people follow suit.
They shit on us when we gave feedback for Saints Row and Battlefield, and look how that turned out. We got the power. More people just need to check their hype to play something for their principles.

If there is no character creator or more red flags reveal themselves then don't give them your money. Instead buy Asian / Eastern European games where all the woke garbage just doesn't exist like it does here.
I'm a straight male, but I almost always play as an attractive female, if given a choice. If I'm going to be running around with a character for 20+ hours, I don't want them to be ugly. I play games to escape the real world; not to see myself. I don't mind the supporting characters being average or ugly, but the main characters, male or female, are preferred as appealing.
I'm a straight male, and I always play as male characters. Can't identify myself as a skinny woman wielding a warhammer or a machine gun.

Look, I used to play a lot of MMORPGs... almost always I played "small" race characters (gnomes, halflings, dwarves, etc). Multiple reasons, one being that a shorter character seems to move faster.
But then I played "Tera", which had A) the most attractive models, male and female, of any MMO I'd played to that point and B) doesn't have miniature classes.
for a long while I played male characters because... male.
But then I realized that the primary point of view was from behind the character (normally I play 1st person)... and if I'm going to have to look at my character the whole game... I'm looking at a beautiful female. And replaced all my characters with female models.
And I don't care what people think. I was playing for _my_ enjoyment. That's what I enjoyed.

We all like to look attractive and dress fashionably. Every single game that has customization, all you see are attractive people that put fashion over stats.
I said the same thing and a bunch of people tried to make it seem like I hate female characters and people really got mad when I said the character looks like “she” uses the pronouns they/them 🤣
The moment I saw the Fables character I looked at that character and went “WTF is that?” Then I looked up the story behind it and just facepalmed immediately! I think Morris needs help and should get it immediately!

To a certain degree yes, but there's a point that once you cross it you can't deny something is factually and objectively ugly. This is one example of that.

What we perceive as beautiful or ugly is actually biologically hardwired into us as a species and we have very little control over it. There is a reason why young women in their teens and 20's are far more desirable than women who are 40+. Same reason fit women are far more beautiful than fat women, or smooth women over hairy women. It's all biological. Sure, we have all kinds of different preferences and beauty standards, but when something is universally rejected and called out as ugly such as this case then it's not just a matter of opinion that she's ugly, it's a factual statement.
@chandllerburse737 Well, that's not my problem. I was pointing out general reality, not what I personally find attractive. Age of consent throughout most of Europe and the rest of the world is lower than in the U.S. and has always been that way. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with someone being in a relationship in their teens so long as the age gap isn't too big. It's gross when someone looks like they are their partner's mom or dad.

Totally agree 😅 I think they shouldnt make an effort to go out of their way to make characters look ugly if you can use cgi and technology to make them look normal or better for male and female characters.
That "ugly" dude at the beginning is an actual person. His name is Richard Ayoade. He's an actor. My favorite role of his is a Moss in the I.T. Crowd. Hilarious show. Highly recommend it.
In character creation I used to make my characters cool, but I started making them look as dumb as possible because it makes the cut scenes hilarious. This character looks like one of my jokes.
I do the same thing. Mass Effect 2 played with an awkward lanky pale red head with an absurdly big nose and tiny mouth was amazing.

Normalizing bland unattractive characters is such a stupid idea. These woke designers are lowering the bar. I also noticed that these facial features are more masculine for a female character while male characters have feminine features. There is also an abundance of characters that have neutral features that sometimes make you wonder what gender it really is even if its specified.
