    Im so thankful i switched to a whole food plant diet when i was 43. I was prediabetic and 60 lbs overweight i started out at 225 and finished at 165 lbs which i am now. I am now 53 and my doctor said i had the blood pressure of a highschool kid.

    Psoriatic arthritis with a fatty liver. Nothing but slow roasted sweet potato and steamed leafy greens three times a day for the last week - so amazing! I'm already noticing a difference in my joints! Thank you for all this free information. Greatly appreciated.

    Dr. Mcdougall is so amazing and i will always share this to all my relatives and friends. Im 65 yo now free of all my medication going now on six years and still continue to be a starchitarian.     This guy married the love of his life and had the children he wanted. I wonder if he would be here today if his wife died in car crash 30 years ago , or if she left him in med school and taken his children in divorce. Who knows he might have started comfort eating and got fat. His life went to plan and thats the real secret to health - the state of your MIND . I can show u many people whose lives and hearts are broken : they try carnivore, they try Vegan , the try starchivore and they remain fat. Its not what you eat , its whats eating you . When the British came to Australia the Aborigines were as skinny as sticks : 90 % of their food was cooked animals like kangaroos and wallabies and animal fat and fish as well as seasonal fruits . Look at their fotos online from 100 years ago - none , not one was even slightly overweight . Same for eskimos , same for Hunter gatherer tribes In africa . None of these you tube diet Gurus ever mention the impact of a broken heart in ruining health . And they all seem to be selling something : books , courses , weekend retreats , supplements , pills .

      Have you tried his diet? You still have to limit portions. That’s just life. No one’s life is perfect and his hasn’t been either. He’s lost his house because of a fire that came through CA. It’s best to not look back and get stuck in your past, as there is nothing you can do about it. Live for now and the future and make efforts to change things in your diet and try and exercise. Change doesn’t come by feeling sorry for yourself. You have to become a fighter and try. Don’t give up. Believe that you are worth it. Keep at it.

      Eskimos lived in average till 40’s. Find Mc Douglle video about that . Only WFPB diet and No other diet can REVERSE heart disease and cure diabetes … the cause of many other diseases.Once you read a bit more about it,you will understand.

      From the way you're writing, you've been through pain and/or others around you have is coming through pretty clearly - I'm sorry. You're also I would guess pretty new or not aware of the scientific method and valid studies from the way you write as well? This can be hard to get into as a layperson, especially if life trauma and suffering have been in there, which I guess have been the case.
      Aboriginal, Eskimo and other hunter gatherer tribes have often had sadly low life expectancies from the published research - in fact, at times among the shortest in the world. And high disease rates: both of which you didn't point out, and is sometimes contrary to popular belief/hope.
      I'd say then kindly - just keep exploring Dr M's website, newsletters, presentations (and those of his like minded colleagues), and more and more will start to make sense. It's all there for free - you don't actually have to ever pay for a thing. He is no "guru" - he is a medical doctor, researcher, and health provider.
      Dr M too also had a massive stroke at age 18, before he changed his diet - but it prompted him to go to med school in the first place to learn more. He's had family losses as well: him and his wife have had many challenges over the years. And as another poster has said, lost his home in California wildfires several years back, and had to start life over.

      I understand what your trying to say,but we obviously don't know everything about his life..as for it going to plan,it sounds like you might not havr heard about his experience with having a major stroke in his late teens or early 20's and having to recover from that. So no,I wouldn't say his life was perfect.

      That's true. People in my city who so lovingly grow fresh vegetables in their garden & donate them to soup kitchens are simply wasting those lovely food items. They are usually thrown out because their clients refuse to eat greens, cruciferous veggies, etc. That literally hurts me!

    Oh my God, this man slays me. 😂I was laughing out loud. His mocking sarcasm sense of humor is just the best and he was in true form in this presentation. A “spoonful” of this humor helps the “medicine go down” of what we all really need to do to get healthy. I needed this boost right now and I so appreciate you, Dr. McDougall.

    Thank you for bringing up thin people! There is more to it than being overweight and fat loss. About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease as a thin, active, non-diabetic. I don’t know about my insulin levels- no one has ever checked that. I do know that Keto diet x 1 year, made it worse (liver increased in size and LFTs went up). I did lose weight on keto- even though I didn’t really want to. Now 3 years vegan and I have seen slow improvement: no fat detected in my liver (via ultrasound), liver is slowly decreasing in size and LFTs have slowly decreased. I am thankful, but still don’t understand why my liver accumulates fat and the rest of me is thin.😔

    It looks to me that the biggest problem is psychological , manifesting in misinformation and obsession about food. Having been on the MC D diet for 8 years,it’s interesting hearing people’s diet problems on repeat. When you eat right you need not worry about food or health. Just get on with your life!

    I have fatty liver and sludgy bile, lost my gallbladder because of it. Now I get inflamed at times because the sludge irritates the biliary tubes. I am at my wit's end. My doctor said I shouldn't have legumes and raw greens. Do you think the starch solution will help me?

    Chef AJ I come to realize that my fatty liver is coming from the inability for me to digest fermentable oligosaccharides, disaccharides, monosaccharides, and polyols in carbohydrates. We need content on this!

      I have unexplained raised liver enzymes...I'm think and eat low fat etc. I do take supplements though.. Can you tell me about what diet you found to help your liver?

    I love dr. McDougall straight forward style. And I usually agree with everything. But this one point I have to respectfully disagree and that is I do believe sugar to be addictive. Physically and mentally. Not at the same levels as maybe Heroin or other drugs. But as a recovered opioid addict,I've experience some similar issues when coming off sugar and caffeine as I did with the drugs. Including severe depression,headaches, sweating and heart palpitations.

    when i was young in rural areas when the sun was about to set, each village smelled strongly of sweet potatos, so aromatic and tasty. that was heavily starch based and most villagers were fit, healthy and worked hard every day. God bless!

    Dr M hasn't been loaded with yeasts or parasites calling for carbs and sugar to the point where one loses all self respect and becomes suicidal. Yes food can be an addiction

      Assuming this isn't satire/joking...? well, if you're at that point, you're sadly needing urgent medical attention for anti-yeast and anti-parasite medications or related treatments - that's probably gone beyond any diet at that point.

    He calls certain diseases and disorders "food poisoning" in his book, but eating then it's s just "a bad habit"?? The impetus is not "weakened" by saying that? Not going to establish "enough effort, enough pushback"? In his book, he doesn't call the foods that cause serious health problems "bad habits", he calls them "food poisoning". There's also alcohol-poisoning, drug-poisoning, tabacco-poisoning. His argument is contradictory.

      :) No, he and Mary live in Portland, Oregon I believe, after the wildfires in Santa Rosa, CA some years back caused them to lose their home. They then relocated to be closer to some family in Oregon. But they have the fondness for Hawaii still in the memories, hence the wall sculptures and other references.

    This is what truly happens to me. I came from ketogenic diet to vegan diet and yes m6 glucose goes up and my body is making adjustments for it

    I like Dr McDougal....but im not sold on his Starch Solution diet.
    Here is why....everyone is built differently with different needs. Whenever a doctor goes to extremes on a diet -- that's a red flag.
    My asthma gets worse on Dr Dougal's high starch diet(gluten, allergens, and histamine from grains).
    I do best on a 'specific foods' diet. I need more omega 3s, more vitamin c, and more protein. This means more flaxseeds, more fish, more fruits, more veggies.
    I need less fats, nuts and grains.
    My asthma is very well controlled on a 'specific foods' diet.

      What I'm hearing that not that high starch makes you feel worse but eating a lot of grains. Have you even tried eating this way but not eating so the grains that seemed to be causing your issues?

    I am a quarter in this video...very educational...there is so much talk about eating fat causing fatty liver...what about the impact of overly processed foods and high sugar foods causing fatty liver?

    Potatos never go bad. They germinate and dry up but never rot. That to me proves that it is very anti-oxidation. I actually don't mind eating plants leaving out there for a long time. The longer they last uncorrupt, the better anti-oxidation they are. Plus, all the fruits leaving there a long time become so sweet and ripe and delicious than when they first arrive. God bless!

    Ok yeah drug addiction doesn't always cause seizures etc. There are different withdrawal symptoms for different addictions. Maybe a constant feeling of hunger no matter how much we stuff ourselves with McDougall-compliant potatoes and vegetables and beans, and a headache etc, are symptoms of withdrawal from the addictive ingredients in foods that are refined and have salt, fried oils, sugar and other excitotoxins in them, like msg and similar additives by other names.

      Politely, you seem to be more venting and accusing, then looking for answers here? The Starch Solution presentation and text are pretty clear - and dietary poisoning in the way Dr M describes is made pretty clear as different from the likes of bacterial infection from contaminated and spoiled foods, which is different. No contradiction here.

    I hate to be the one to disagree with Dr. Mcdougall.. but i have Lean NAFLD.. and i have been battling with it fof 30 years.. and I even tried carnivore for a full year (after being 100% vegan for the past 20 years) I went from 140lbs (5'8 male in 40s) to 125lbs.. very very skinny.. but my chronic uticaria (hives) persisted.. so i quit after a full year, because i figured a year of eating meat was enough to see some improvement, and there was none.. So returning to starch based diet of mainly potatoes and some fruit.. no oils ever.. and 3 months in packed on 25lbs with no effort.. so um, yeah, potatoes will add fat, and if you poked me with a needle to see what my favorite food was, I guess you would discover it was potatoes and watermelon...

    I would recommend potatos and sweet potatos to anyone who really don't want to waste any minute on cooking and eating. Just batch boil and steam massive amounts of potatos and sweet potatos and eat whenever you are hungry. You will survive. God bless!

    If "the fat you eat is the fat you wear", like Dr McDougall says, why do people on very high fat keto diets lose weight?

      Several reasons - (a) they, unhealthily in this case, lose initial glycogen stores and water weight for breaking down glycogen first, before going into ketosis (b) their overall calorie and energy intake actually tends to go down, not up, from this kind of regime. These diets have a common side effect of mild to moderate nausea, and/or reducing appetite, as the body and brain thinks you're going into enduring starvation mode as a result of taking on longer term ketosis (c) The fat they take in has to used for energy, as there are no or very little sugars (hence breaking down into ketones). But doing so can and usually will produce toxic by-products longer term - people can go into a state known as keto-acidosis, which can be dangerous for the vulnerable short term, and non-vulnerable long term.
      Note that NO animal in nature stays in any long term period of ketosis - none. It's a state reserved through getting through starvation, and/or for reducing hunger pangs and keeping people alive in moments of starvation, or relieving hunger pangs near death.
      Starch based diets are the normal mode of healthy people, not ketogenic ones.

      @@fifteenbyfive apparently not - even bears and other hibernating mammals, and rodents, periodically wake up for a short periods to feed over the winter in order to replenish sugar and glycogen stored.
      They will have usually foraged for non perishable edible plant parts, as well as standard nuts or seeds, to help them through the winter.

      I'd try his key presentation "The Starch Solution" first, and his Newsletters on oil on his website. His webinar on No Oil, Really No Oil!! from July 2016 may also help you.
      Not sure what you mean by vegetables and rice today not being the same - you might need to say more on that.

      You're evidently a newcomer to this - that's ok, and everybody's learning. I'd try his key presentation "The Starch Solution" first on YT, and the book by the same name, if you wish and can get it. That will help put things quickly into context.

      @@claresmith9261 it's courageous what you're doing, it is. There's the McDougall Forums on the McD website for support, as well as places like the Plant Based Nutrition Support Group (PBNSG) if you look this up.
      It depends on how apathetic/hostile any family obviously might be (I'm sorry especially, if it's the latter), but don't worry about trying to convert them is a huge thing - I remember too how radical this can seem to people on the 'outside'. Just quietly and diligently do what you're doing if possible, and see who becomes interested over time.
      And again, good on you - it takes courage. Remember too John and Mary started out as the outsiders too - John admitted he nearly caused a huge major friction with Mary, when first suggesting to her oils especially were to go from their diet. However, with patience over time, he won out - you might too :)

      If you search for "Dr McDougall's Color Picture Book" you'll find probably what's the most easily accessible and concise presentation for what to do, and what not to do, on this. It's a great resource I still come back to sometimes.

      Fruits, vegetables and starches! Google a list! No meat, dairy or oil. Very simple in 3 steps. 1. Choose your starch 2. Choose your veggie, 3. Choose your sauce. A meal plan is on his website!

      He's talked about that in other presentations - in fact he's talked about most food related issues some time or other. Food addiction gets easier the longer you go with a starchivore/starch based regime - the body calms down from refined sugar and fat cravings. It's challenging at first (most addictions are), but you can get there.

    Thanks. Great to watch as always. I gorge AND graze 😀. Love food so eat big meals but then keep nibbling on nuts, pumpkin seeds, dates, fruit... it's like a floodgate of appetite has been opened. Still i sort of manage, weight ok, BMI a little over 19. Overnight fast of a minmum of 13 hours often longer sometimes even approaching 16 hours helps, plus Whole Food Fully Plant Based diet. Love my starches and steamed vegetables. Just need to control nuts and prunes and dates... basic food too but i suppose it works out ok.

    Hearing Dr McDougall talk about addiction at just over the hour mark was interesting. He firmly believed that alcohol and cigarettes are addictive but not food. He said he was so addicted to smoking that he would smoke cigarette butts out of an ashtray. A friend with an eating disorder told me she dumped an ashtray on a large pizza and threw it in the trash so she wouldn't eat it. She dug it out later and ate the whole thing!! I agree with him that no one gets the shakes from not eating tri-tip or pork chops. But they could from pizza or other junk food because it is addicting! What about chocolate or potato chips? The worst is diet Coke! Something comes over you like you are possessed! The food industry has taken something natural and turned it into a DRUG!!

    Regarding Gas! I went WFPB-McDougall 15 years ago. The first year I could have filled a hot hair balloon and taken you for a ride!! Lots of gas! But my body adjusted and now I can eat beans and lentils any time with a normal amount of non-smelly gas. Just let the body adjust and take a beano type product while adjusting. It's worth the effort to make the change!

    Overeating is not food addiction. Addiction is the wrong word to use and shifts focus from behaviour. To say one is addicted to candy or bacon places blame on the object and hides that repeat behaviours can be obsessive compulsive and fall under psychological factors.

    On the comment of benefits of a starch based diet. Your body definitely smells better, skin and hair is no longer greasy, fitter, trim, never worry about body weight. The best thing though is not walking along the aisle of death in the supermarket and perusing the morgue of body parts.

    Dr. McDougall is great. I hate to say it, but the length of his videos is not so great. Just my opinion.
