Family caregivers are rarely or never involved in psychosocial interventions provided to people with dementia in nursing homes. Involving them can enhance the participation of the residents and promote the pleasure of sharing an activity together. It can help to strengthen the relationship and to change the family caregivers’ perception of their relative.
The Fondation conducted a study involving 15 caregiver/resident dyads in 4 nursing homes from September 2022 to February 2023.
The aims were to assess the effects of a common practice of a Tai-Chi based gymnastics programme on the relationship between residents living with dementia and family caregivers, on the mood of residents living with dementia and family caregivers, on the quality of life of residents living with dementia and on feeling of competence of family caregivers.
