  • In this intimate and personal portrait, we follow Paul, a single, straight bus driver of 37, as he undergoes a gender transition to begin living as their true self: a woman called Julia. At first glance, Paul comes across as a regular, affable and blokey man with a passion for racing cars and farming, but inside it is a different story.
Filmed over a two year period, this revealing and intimate documentary explores the deconstruction and reconstruction of a person with unflinching humour and surprise, turning upside down all the stereotypes about what makes a man and what makes a woman. With endearing honesty and a strong determination not to fall into pre-ordained expectations, Julia gives us an engaging account of the everyday difficulties involved in going through a sex change.
Ultimately this film is not about being the perfect woman or man, but about living honestly and in your own unique way.

I can say yes it is hard to go through gender change, I have gone through it, best wishes to Julia.

As a cis woman I have never fit into one stereotype or another of what a woman is. I am both a motorcycle rider and enthusiast, someone who would love to rock climb and kickbox (just not able to physically do it anymore), and sky dive, but also love dressing up in fancy dresses even if I'm not going anywhere, dance, try and figure out makeup, and do my nails, etc. Men especially don't get it, they don't understand how I can be both a girly girl and a tom boy. I really don't understand what the big deal, I just like what I like, I don't gender any activity. If a boy wants to wear makeup and dresses but doesn't want to transition to a female, no problem. If a girl wants to be a mechanic or a kickboxer or race cars, more power to her. So I'm a little puzzled as what they mean by dress like a woman. We don't all wear dresses etc. I can understand the need to transition to the other gender but I don't get some of the stipulations to get the surgery, I guess that's what I'm saying because it seems the concept of what a woman is seems very narrow to me, according the health professionals and perhaps to some transgender women. I don't know, I think about this sometimes, what makes a man what makes a woman. Part of it is societal norms, what with third genders like hidjras and two spirits vs a binary gender society. I just been struggling with these thoughts for awhile, not come up with any radical solutions or ideas, just wondering.

The reason why it doesn't make sense is because it doesn't. For a long time I was like you, giving the benefit of the doubt and assuming there was just something more to this that I just didn't see yet. But the more you look at it, the more you see the 'born in the wrong body' narrative doesn't stack up - because there is naturally a range of presentations in each sex, from femme boys to butch women, it becomes quite regressive to define gender by a stereotype. However without the stereotype what are you left with, some kind of gendered soul? If you look into the Ray Blanchard typology (a researcher who has worked with hundreds of Trans women) this documentary will make a lot more sense.

I mean, its touched on very briefly in this doco where she said she thought she'd have to give up her car racing after transitioning, but then realised she didnt. Also this looks like a really old doco, it's quite outdated.

@KraftyKreator As a Woman you should have had a strong enough mind to have not been spoonfed the 'cis' bs fuelled by male misogyny and temporary social contagion and been proud to stand in womanhood as a woman.

Hi Julia, my name is Laurajane and I am a sixty-eight year old transgender woman. I was transfixed by your video and I relate to a lot that you have gone through. It is hard and I think that you summed it up by why would you go through all this if you didn't have to. You look fabulous and I wish you all the best for your future. Best wishes and love from Laurajane from Lake Taupo in New Zealand ❤ 🇳🇿

Can I just say how sorry I feel for people having to go thru the struggle of not feeling comfortable in your own skin. Not looking on the outside like WHO YOU TRULY ARE on the inside. What a ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE STRUGGLE to have to continually live in. Life can be so unfair. I can't even IMAGINE the struggle of having to decide to actually have a gender reassignment surgery. To actually permanently change yourself. That would be such a long LONG standing turmoil deep within your insides. And so unfair to those going thru this when quote unquote "NORMAL" people just get to live their lives. They get to Go thru their day to day lives with just the normal life struggles. They get to just DO LIFE. They don't have this huge HUGE struggle inside, ON TOP of just the normal daily struggles.
I hope that Julie has an absolutely AMAZING LIFE when she's finished her journey. Then she'll get to just MOVE ON IN LIFE! Actually......
HER LIFE WILL JUST BE STARTING!!
Good luck and lots of love to you Julie!!
    Big HUGS!!

How freaking UNFAIR RUDE MEAN AND SELFISH of her family to feel like this affects them in ANYWAY!! How absolutely MEAN is it for Julie's family to not want anything but happiness for her! I just can't even begin to understand this line of thinking!!! I want ABSOLUTELY NOTHING BUT SHEER HAPPINESS FOR EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN MY FAMILY!! Weather they are Male or female. Boy or girl. Alien or Sasquatch! Who cares as long as those are Happy!!!

It does effect them it’s a major change. However seeing how happy being a woman makes her should be enough to show them what she’s doing isn’t wrong.

We all know friends and family who have lost everything from addiction (drugs/gambling) they lost their families, their marriages, their children. So to say "Well, look, this is not a choice for us because who in their right mind would choose to give up friends, family, jobs etc"
The answer is o one in their right mind would
    Choose this lifestyle.
This is classic autogynephilia....a sexual addiction to yourself. The average or typical woman wants a man, she is attracted to a man. Many of these men claim they are not gay...it turns out they are not however attracted to women....they are attracted to one WOMAN....themselves. it's heartbreaking because majority will be so upset in about 6 years and ANGRY at all of us for not jumping in and helping them to stop before their illness took their penis.
