Kun joutui harmajan taa, viel’ siivet hetken aikaa pois kurkottaa, vaimean vaikerruksen voi kuulla niin kuin kuulee hiljaisuuden. Jos siellä laulella voi, sen soitto hangillani korkeaan soi, vaan kerran vaikenevan, kun kuulen pienen hanki-sirkuttajan, niin laulu soi Sylvian. Yllä talven tähtitaivas, sen loiste lepää nietoksilla, sinä silti yksin hiljaa kuin haihtuvana. Päällä kerran kevään usko, sen tahto taipuu yön oksilla, sinä silti vaiti kosket kuin haikeana. The band's frontman, Jonne, says: "'Harmaja' is an unusual KORPIKLAANI song with its slow tempo and emotional strength. The song is about longing and I managed to charge it with a great emotional atmosphere. When making the album we mostly used the first takes; we didn't get stuck in details when there was no particular need to. It was important for us to keep the emotion and mood at the forefront even if the technical side wasn't absolutely perfect at times.

If you understood the words you'd be even more bummed out. Still a beautiful song who's title doesn't even translate to English very well. English has a lot of words for objects Finnish has a lot of words for abstract thoughts . The two languages don't translate well to one another.
@@thomashaapalainen4108 I think Harmaja refers to an island close to Helsinki where the sea opens to the south. The video and the first verse would make sense

This song mentions many times a Finnish Christmas song called "Sylvian joululaulu" (the Christmas song of Sylvia). It is really sad song about a blackcap bird that is trapped in a cage and whose eyes are pierced. Usually blackcaps escape Finland's cold winters by going to warm Italy, but this one can't and it is singing about homesickness. I translated this really quickly, so there might be some grammar mistakes. This is really cryptid and hard to translate, but I hope that our English-speakers can know at least a tiny bit of what this is all about.
Rough translation:
When ended up in behind Harmaja (I am not sure is this one possible to translate or what it really means, but it's near a word 'harmaa' which means grey)
Still the wings are reaching out a little moment
You can hear the muffled wailing the same way you can hear silence
If it is possible to sing here, it'll and its voice is reaching high in my crust of snow
But once when I hear this little snow-singer to fall silent
The song of Sylvia will start to play

It's quite good translation. Some little mistakes, but nothing big.
The Finnish lyrics at the chorus goes:
"Yllä talven tähtitaivas, sen loiste lepää nietoksilla,

sinä silti vaiti kosket kuin haikeana."

Always respected non English speaking bands when they keep singing in their own language. Amazing, wish more bands would sing in their native language more often
There are hundreds of good bands, but the english speakers insist on looking only their own navel.

My daughter is 4 weeks old now and I sing this to her as a lullaby. She falls asleep every single time 😮 too bad that the other family members can’t sing it to her, as they don’t speak Finnish.... guess it will always have to be me bringing her to bed now 😝

I love it! It's beautiful. The feeling of it is very accurate. I lost my father two years ago and storm, darkness and stars represent very well how I felt. At first, I just felt I was drowning and I wanted to die to be with him. After crying everything I had in me, I eventually found strenght to carry on - I'm sure that's what he wanted, after all! One day at a time, I waited for my heart to stop aching and learned to live with my memories of him. I feel like the storm has passed, even if I still miss him badly. Everytime I look at a starry sky, I remember him!

I was listening to this song every time I was on a 7-hour night bus trip to the city where the girl of my dreams lived. Watching through the window, flying by the trees, passing by vast fields, wondering what every light in them means, and what kind of soul is spending their night in solitude over there. It's magical, I don't know why.
i don't know why but, i nearly cried from this. the song has emotions stir up inside me that rarely come up, it's an amazing song that's all i can say right now.

Without any finnish skills, i've got somehow the feeling while listening, that this song tells the story about a man, who had lost someone loved (thanks to the explanation of Jonne!). that's pure magic and such a great atmosphere, when music can tell stroies without any (understandable) text. Love it!

I think the song is about the singer losing the mother of his child a while back
In lyrics man holds frozen songbird between his hands and hopes it will survive and maybe sing again like it used to.
But actual story is unimportant, words are full of caring, worry, tenderness and sadness when someone who you care passes away.
Description says song is inspired by Christmas song "Sylvian joululaulu" and I can hear the same emotion in both songs, also style imitates 19th century poetic sentences perfectly. Sylvia is btw bird, blackcap.
It's completely different than what you did before. I didn't expect it to sound like this but I really love it. It's absolutely amazing.
