Chas is full of great information based on lots of experience. This is one of the best (if not the best) introduction to fixie riding I've seen. This one video containts more information than years of Wabi cycling videos... Really great video, and good luck Jeff (you'll need it!)
I just rode my State Bicycle fixie to pick up something from the store the other day. I was coming home a little warmed up and took the last couple of corners at speed. The last right hand turn felt like a pedal strike looming, so I "stopped pedaling." The rear end bucked and reminded me that fixie's are a different animal of bike. Good luck!
HEEEEEY CHAS !!! So cool to see him on your channel. As the saying goes, the crossover I didn't know I wanted ! So pumped to see you tackle this race, best of luck Jeff
I used to ride fixed gear a lot in the city, I understand all your fears, that is very brave of you to try this. Best of luck. Excited to see your race!
Ok so heres how I feel. Been watching your vids for years. I love them. I am a non competitive mountain biker but I enjoy riding with speed and exercising technical ability. I ride a rigid single speed Surly Lowside with 3" tires. This dude is awesome. Everything he's saying is exactly what I say to people about mtb. You want that high bb to pedal over the chunk and the widest tires you can get to maximize floatation and cornering. Great video. This guy definitely understands his sport very well.
This is going to be great and can't wait to see it! Fixed crits - pedals: speedplay, because they are the easiest to get in and are narrow, Tires: Veloflex Corsa 30's clinchers with latex tubes, beautiful, supple ride and light. Good luck and can't wait to see it!
Fantastic, looking so much to seeing this with your usual tactics commentary! Some additional minor points: - Try 165mm cranks if you have them available for that couple extra mm's of pedal clearance - Consider setting the saddle a bit lower than you usually do on a road bike - this is just to make sure you won't accidentally lock up you knee in extended position - Chain tension: make it tight to prevent chain drops, but leave bit of slack so that it spins freely and does not bind - Try to use your core and arms when slowing down - where you would pull on handlebars when sprinting, try pushing instead
Yesss! All the fixed gear goons approve. And no worries. Me and my friends raced a whole season of fixed gear races and nobody clipped a pedal in the corner eventhough we average 45kmh in a race. But ye, karting courses are more tricky, but clipping your pedal will be harder than just sliding out.
it was great meeting Chas at the Bay Climb start line: legend. Nice job there podiuming in the fixed gear finals, especially the final 100 meters: very different thing than open division on the 21% grade
I'm excited to see this! I've always wanted to get into track racing, since the cost of entry bike wise is so low compared to a road race! Good luck Jeff! Can't wait to see the next video!
This is not track racing. The events are not held on a velodrome, and the skills are completely different. Go to a track and try to ride around it, and you'll experience the difference. Both activities are great, but like chalk and cheese.
He actually posted a video a little over a year ago with Gas Station Food Cyclist doing the Red Hook Crit the year before it was canceled. Great video, you should check it out.
Jeff, a thing to consider would be Crankbrothers Candy or Eggbeater pedals. 4 possible clip points instead of two, so a bit easier to get into than SPD or SPD SL pedals. You need different cleats to adjust the release, rather than a screw, though.
10:55 is it me or does the MTB pedal look like it could actually be wider than the road pedal? The road pedal has more height, especially closer to the outside, so maybe that's where the math comes in. Chas has some nice pro tips, great vid
Hi Jeff, I didn't fully get the foot in the back wheel brake idea. Does he realise the cranks are still turning! If you need to slow down and you are unclipped you are in collarbone #2 territory...My 21 tips are : ensure the chain tension is TIGHT. Any slack will feel like whiplash when you try to pedal backwards otherwise. Second tip (you probably know) if your legs are at much greater risk of breakage unclipped so when it gets squeaky try to hard wire yourself to stay onboard- same goes for your arms. Finally I would wear two pairs of thin lycra armwarmers and full finger gloves. Not so much for the reduced damage than the fact it will make you braver. Used to work for me racing big nat tours in the wet. I also used to listen to Blondies "Die young, stay pretty" but maybe that was just me :) Good luck!
Be careful out there Jeff! I’ve seen more than one amazing roadie have a momentary lapse of concentration and try to stand up on a fast moving fixie (to shake out the legs) and the self inflicted crashes were brutal.
a miss & out on a gocart track is cool & all, but what I'd really like to see on Redbull is a Tracklocross race on a Mud-a-Drome around a banked stock tank/pond.
Fixie short track is the demolition derby of bike racing. Hopefully you come out of it without a fucked up grill or broken bones. Definitely wear a mouthpiece !
6:45 in ! WAIT A Minute! Ok so you got pedals and cranks that only let you turn so sharp. Traction is not the issue. Don't run wide tires at low pressure! Can you explain more the reason? It makes no sense!
With bike lines becoming more consolidated and vertically integrated, maybe the future of Grand Tours is more diversity in genre. Sure, you have your mountain stages and your sprint stages and time trials, but what about fixie crit? Mountain/gravel bike stages? Track team pursuit? Go full N+1.

This looks really cool, Jeff! It would be great if you can post videos of your practice runs.
Been a fan of Chas since the early MASH days, dude is an absolute ripper! Hope to see u guys at the event and good luck to u both!
Huge expectations, but whatever happens, this is going to epic and fun! Can’t wait for the vid! Good luck Jeff!
Indeed. I am hoping for maxi-coverage.
Watched chas shred at a tracklocross race a few weeks ago. Dude is insanely skilled. Also took our beer handout lap after lap. Absolutely savage.

Superb camera quality Jeff :)
Love how focussed Jeff is when listening
Wow. That guy is such a great teacher! Amazing tips!
This is amazingg, Norcal going on some fixed races. I'v waited this moment so long haha

Very excited to see the upcoming footage!!! So awesome to see you doing another type of racing!!
Ok, this was one of the best videos yet. So interesting and so much expertise
Fantastic, looking so much to seeing this with your usual tactics commentary!

All of this applies to street racing and alleycats but his 46/18 gearing for this makes me think this totally different
Can’t wait for the race! This is badaas
13:20 Christopher LaPorte at Roubaix, he must knew about this technique lol

@@SpininStyle I didn't know what else to call this, but yes I am aware of the Olympic velodrome races.
Interesting video, this brings back memories of my first Surley Fixie ride down hill, "Terrified", to say the least
Good luck and safe riding. Hopefully you'll have lots of race footage.
7:04 - Nothing says _California_ like the phrase, “How gnarly can I rip these corners?”
Good luck Jeff! Chas is an awesome crazy dude and stoked to see him on the channel! Will this be livestreamed anywhere?
Terry B will be live streaming Red Bull Short Circuit on his Twitch channel.
@@jmsgrady Oh perfect, thanks fam! Terry B is where I first saw Chas. Love when different people I follow show up at the same place.
Omfg!!! Never thought I’d see something like “fixie” on this channel!!!
(I’m a ss on track or MTB myself)
Thanks 👏

@@snoboardkid11thx
Super interesting stuff! Im looking forward to this.
Amazing content! I can't wait for the follow-ups. Thanks for the schooling, Chas, and keep the rubber side down, Jeff!
Chas is an absolute lord, great to see this crossover
Definitely looking forward to this!

I can't wait, I love this style of crit racing! So entertaining!
OMFG. Good luck, Jeff!
Wonderful! Finally a discipline I can relate to!

thank you so much jeff, ive been deprived of fixie crits
Oh damn - I can't wait to see how you fair on this Jeff.
Cool... its as scarey as hell but addictive. Good Luck
Really looking forward to see you on a track bike!
Good luck Jeff!

Hi I'm Johnny Knoxville and this is Fixie Crit
Hey when can we expect Couch to Crit S2?
Be careful out there Jeff! I’ve seen more than one amazing roadie have a momentary lapse of concentration and try to stand up on a fast moving fixie (to shake out the legs) and the self inflicted crashes were brutal.
Cannot wait to see you there.
Hopefully i was able to help with that chainring! Hope to see you at the track in the future.
Shouts to the Chicago CMWC poster on the wall in Chas’ background
Jeff, have you ridden at Hellyer?
Notchas! What a collab!
Looking a bit nervous at fixie crit's Jeff. Should be fun though!
Fun to see you nervous about something. Also is it coincidence, or is Chas the inspiration for Chazzzzz from Disenchantment?
a miss & out on a gocart track is cool & all, but what I'd really like to see on Redbull is a Tracklocross race on a Mud-a-Drome around a banked stock tank/pond.
i'm sooo excited for this!!!
Jeff’s gonna ride a fixie to work!
Next stop, Jeff competes in XC race
He gets teleported to stage 4 of Cape Epic tomorrow
This was awesome
how bout them speedplay pedals
yooo i ride fixed gear and have those same LOOK spd pedals. i found running the shimano cleat with those LOOK pedals to be the best for me.
Superb video!
Jeff, are you getting a new bike, a cannondale or cervelo, now that Mike's Bikes got sold?
Speedplay pedal would be good for this
goodluck jeff! just send it!
Well we agree that you are not an average Joe
I didn't know Steve-O rides.
😂😂😂u had me rolling
Who knew Tyler Durden rides crits!
Fixie short track is the demolition derby of bike racing. Hopefully you come out of it without a fucked up grill or broken bones. Definitely wear a mouthpiece !
I love my black label v2. Get those carbon ebay track wheels, so we match.😂
fixed gear riders probably triggered by how many times you used the word fixie
46x19 only has a top speed of 40km/h (25mph) at 130rpm, isn't that a bit slow? I don't know much about fixies
The race is held on a go-kart track, average speed is low it's all about cornering and fighting for position
Remember - this is an indoor track - the longest straight is going to be short enough you won't spin that out before you need to slow down again.
What kind of bike do you ride currently
Chas looks exactly like I'd expect someone named Chas to look like
Do either of the hosts have a velodrome racing background?
Remember the crank arm is a lever. The longer the arm the greater the power
Is this the American Wout van Aert?
My street setup is the opposite and that makes sense
What glasses are the pink ones?
Oakley holbrook, kokoro edition. With prescription lenses.
6:45 in ! WAIT A Minute! Ok so you got pedals and cranks that only let you turn so sharp. Traction is not the issue. Don't run wide tires at low pressure! Can you explain more the reason? It makes no sense!
What is a fixie pro?
You didn’t need to say he was a Fixed crit pro, those glasses told us
This sounds insanely dangrous :O
Idk if you're still allowed to call yourself 'average' anymore.. you're clearly above average
oh boy
Hmm sounds like a collar bone to me.
Dude on the right looks like he's wearing one of those dorky mustache and geeky glasses masks

OMg that's some huuuuge cogs
This video has a chad/virgin meme vibe
Ofc His name is “chas”
F**ing finally!!!
don't go with 46x18 pls go with 46x19
"I think you've got a great skillset".... power... Cause deceptively, no average joe that makes 230 watt ftp can win.
just got jawmogged by chas 😑
