Evicting a 94 year old, bedridden lady?!? That's just pure evil.
So is never owning that item and trying to hold it hostage.
evil is rent and acting like you own it.
No it is not it a matter of economics
foolish of the renter not evil of the owner.
@@Stan_in_Shelton_WA He purchased a property knowing the rental arrangements. If not evil, then viciously incompetent and does not need government intervention to spare him from obviously inevitable losses. Anyone who can't see that probably supported the bailout of Enron and likes lead based smoothies
Squatters can't be evicted but lawabiding citizens can be evicted.
Its ridiculous. The nerve of the owner to complain about operating costs, I bet my life he doesn’t do shit to the building and he’s getting huge tax breaks for owning a rent-controlled building.
For real , that’s so freakin unfair!! That shows you how much of a joke the legal system is , so flawed and ridiculous!!
no he's not! He's not getting anything from the city unless the tenant is subsidized with section 8 or another non profit or SF Human Agency, where by which he would only be getting part of the rent from SF.@@MNPComedy
yes, so insane that a owner can't own the property they own. The occupant can control ownership is absurd.@@SimplySergMX_arts
@@Stan_in_Shelton_WAwe need to tax the crap out of landlords and pass tougher rent control landlords are petitioning for this by doing things like this
80 years paying rent, she probably bought the house twice by that point
Probably more.
She didn't pay for it though. While it's messed up, isn't it more messed up we accepted this behavior in our society, in fact it's the norm. You can shame all you want but we all contributed to her eviction and society. Because we allow business to thrive in monopolistic control. We can't pass up any good deal in the US.
Like RUclips, we're all on here cause creators and viewers said hey this is free and cheap. But now we've witnessed the consolidation of technological power and infrastructure under a few major corporations, notably Google. This consolidation has led to the demise of numerous competitors and alternative platforms. Why cause internet free and cheap, as we see RUclips force more and more ads cause where you're going to run to now? Nowhere left to run. But hey it was free right?? Now creators complain and viewers alike but we both contributed to this, blame the other half but take some blame at yourself. Not thinking about how every aspect of your life dominos into practices like this. Like we mix recycling in one bin, kinda insane, you think it goes in the magic "recycle sorter machine"? But convenience right? Out of sight out of mind. Until China said they didn't want our trash anymore? Remember when the news freaked out? Oh wait another country accepted nevermind forget the unsustainable model.
Similarly look at The suburban dream, with its emphasis on single-family homes and reliance on personal vehicles, represents another facet of these intertwined decisions. While appealing for its promise of privacy and space, this model has proven unsustainable as it does not scale with population growth, leading to inflated housing prices and increased living costs. Yet, it's crucial to acknowledge our collective role in these developments. Consumer choices, whether it's the embrace of RUclips, the purchase of single-family homes, or the acceptance of car dependency. These have all fed into systems that prioritize short-term convenience and profit over long-term sustainability and equity.
In the eviction of an individual today can be seen as a culmination of decades of collective decisions, where convenience, corporate interests, and unsustainable urban and societal models have converged to create a reality where housing is not guaranteed, but a privilege increasingly difficult to secure.
But while companies and businessmen make those decisions, we as the public have bought into them. Giving tips? Giving homeless money of your pocket? Buying a car? What choice do I have? You ask.
That right there is what societal mindset is. You feel regardless what you do, you won't impact because society forces you participate in one way or another. Those who blow it off simply kick the problem down to the next generation. Alternatively the up hill battle gets tougher and tougher. Don't get a car? Well enjoy poor public transportation (which car industry helped destroy). What medicaid to die affordably? Well enjoy the government taking every remaining penny you have left so that you leave your descendants with nothing.
Your right. But these wack ass management companies buy everything on loan which makes them have to increase rent to ridiculous prices so they can be profitable.
@@KOSAMAGAMES professional yapper 😂
@@Scythe_Voltage well I've had this conversation tons of times. Especially when it comes to Los Angeles.
There are essentially two groups of people here, each facing distinct challenges. First, there are those who seem unable or unwilling to grasp the complexities of the situation. They're often so deeply entrenched in the ideals of the American Dream that they'll go to great lengths to pursue it, even if it means turning a blind eye to the flaws in our system or relocating to a new city. However, they soon find themselves confronted with the same issues they sought to escape. As cities expand, many of the systems we've come to accept as "normal" simply fail to scale effectively. Coupled with exorbitant healthcare costs, this perpetuates a cycle wherein individuals struggle to accumulate wealth, and even if they manage to do so, government policies can quickly deplete their assets, leaving little for future generations.
Then there's the second group, which likely encompasses most of those who resonated with my comment. We understand the shortcomings of the system but feel trapped by the lack of viable alternatives. Refusing to buy a car, for instance, means relying on a flawed transportation system that puts us at a significant disadvantage. Similarly, forgoing homeownership means missing out on potential investments and financial stability. It's a sobering reality, and one that prompts the question: will anything truly change? I don't think so.
Partially because "professional yapper", but also people who can't even understand their local government system. Is that by design? who knows.
There is a wickedness in this world that I will NEVER be able to comprehend. Imagine sleeping comfortably knowing a 94 year old is out on the streets? 💔

So they bought a building knowing it had rent controlled units, for the express purpose of evicting them and selling the building for a profit.
Sounds like a contributing factor on why housing is so expensive.
It sounds like it should be a crime.
No, the reason why housing is so expensive is because of rent control. Economists almost universally agree that rent control reduces the number of rental units. This here is a perfect example. Because of rent control, the landlord is not able to raise rents to a level where he can at least break even. As a result, the landlord would rather remove the property from the rental market than continue to lose money. Less supply means higher prices, this is basic economics.

Very sad, this is communism, not capitalism
Literally had this a little over a year ago in the Richmond District. Building of elderly, retired, various ailments.. and myself. It was a 4 unit building. We were offered a measly buyout. Did not accept and the landlord's lawyer said that was fine that he was instructed to Ellis Act the bunch anyway as they wanted to make it into a TIC. Being under the age of 65 and fairly healthy, I got the minimum to time allotted to move and did so. The rest got the full year. My unit went on the public market for about a month then was pulled. My apartment was sold under the rader I think around Thanksgiving and the rest of the tenants luckily got their evictions reversed. The gal that lived above me was in her mid to late 90s, I believe. I am happy that they don't have to move but I am not happy they have to live under this landlord still since she already put them through so much within the first year of grabbing the property.
Some additional notes about the building.
1920's building.
Total rent monthly coming from the building was barely $6k.
Fixes to the building in the last 10 years:
- Replacing the HVAC. Total overhaul for all units.
- Unit across from us needed new sheetrock in the entire unit. They lived there for at least 3 decades without major renovations.
- Sewerline from apartment to street replaced a few years ago.
- Building was repainted in like 2012.
Not sure if that helps at all to the situation, but extra details I suppose.
We need to rally around for this woman! This is unacceptable

She’s robbing her for social security and her credit cards it’s always a scam with people helping elderly out of kindness

Hopefully Nancy Pelosi, a CATHOLIC will put down her drink and use her white privilege to help her elder.
That simple figure is why my dad fought so hard from entering into one recently when he had a recent hospitalization due to a really bad pneumonia. Because of the time spent in ICU and in hospital bed he was having issues walking, so we had no choice but to look for assistance for rehab via at the nursing facility because my mom and I didn't have enough to have him rehab from our tiny house. I recall at least 3 that were removed within the 3 week period he stayed in the home that died in their beds. It was depressing.
They're elderly, not stupid. They know full well the old age homes are just short stop overs and the path to death. Many just want to get on with it.

Now you get it. I tell people we don't have a homeless problem, we have a greed and corruption problem.
@@katl1489 if you think that’s cali alone that’s silly, corruption is existent if people are running it, also illegal people are another huge issue, imagine having illegal people making up 20% of your population, then the illegal people breed.
Yup its a greed and corruption problem. Ppl wanting to charge an arm and a leg to live in a glorified hallway, and investment companies making bank holding ppls need for housing against them. Pretty similar to the reason other places are having a housing crisis honestly
I lived in one apartment for almost 10 years I know this feeling
It grows on you
My mom and sister are being evicted. They been there for almost 40 year's. The unit was sold and new management will remodel and raise ro higher rent. Now to get a new place is a burden because rent is so high for retirement income. Like $1800. I know other places are higher but this is for what can be afford. Hope she doesn't get evicted and all those who are struggling same story.
10 years is 1/3 of a mortgage pay off. You pay off a house in your working years, yours or someone else's.
You sound like a renter.
I've rented the same house for almost 20 yrs. My Japanese landlord has never raised my rent. In this culture, it's generally considered bad form to increase rent when you have a good renter.
@@kristinab1078 In San Francisco, u can't raise the cost of rent on a renter who is a current occupant. Hence why they are being kicked out instead of just seeing a rent increase.
Praying for you Helen❤
What is being done to this poor woman is cruel
It's hard to feel for an investor who didnt do the math before purchase or who did the math based on removing very long term renters.
In Isla vista, a Chicago company bought an apartment building and evicted 58 longterm tenants who paid over $2,000 a month rent per month.
The company said they didn’t know Santa Barbara had a homeless problem.
@@im-gi2pgThey’re gonna keep washing their hands clean of the problem they helped create and make the city and its people deal with the problem while they make money off of it.
Trust me the math is always done first and several times over
They were aware…. It’s business… they have no concern except for their profit sad but true
Maybe I'm a meanie but I don't see why $100k wasn't enough for them to just move, the building was sold. It wasn't personal. Once the money ran low, there are government programs to help and they probably would end up paying less to live better. Oh well.
some documentary producer needs to interview this woman, she's a walking time capsule, particularly for san francisco. she has been a constant since the early 1940s
I am 67 & my building was bought by a new company who doubled our rent...i am on a fixed income & i few us now have to move
Fuck this money grab ! As if it’s not already expensive as shit to live there
No kidding
Nursing homes can cost $3000 - $10,000+ PER MONTH. San Francisco is probably on the expensive end at about $5000+. So really, Helen will have no where to go unless her insurance covers it. To be so close to spending your LITERAL whole life in one place just to be uprooted so close to the finish line. So sad.
Medicaid pays for nursing home. Everyone knows that. This story is using emotions to cloud reality. Ppl are in the business to make money, even charities.
Not if she goes to that seedy one in the tenderloin next to where taco bell used to be
Even in the poorer counties a good nursing home can cost 5000 per month.
You are right about the $10,000. Assisted living is $5000-$$8,000. She is beyond the assisted living being bedridden. It would be $10,000 to $12,000 or more in the area.
That's a problem with San Francisco. The more they try to make housing affordable the more they end up making it cost most. Liberals simply don't understand how an economy works.
4 tenants are paying $3800.
That's not possible for the owner to operate
It's a Capitalist economy harsh but its reality.
Dang
Disgusting! Leave old people alone. Let them live their last years in peace.

She lived here her entire life practically. 80 years in one place, I can't see myself living in one building for 80 years, I've got to move around. But the apartment seems like a really cool environment to be in with all the helpful caring neighbors. ❤
Her rent must be next to nothing and if she worked all her life she probably has quite a large amount of money saved up.
@@HandbagDiva Yeah. It would be pretty funny if she pays the same on rent that she did since the 1940's. 😊 But that's probably unlikely!
Or whenever she started paying rent lol I know she moved in with her family at age 12 so I guess it was more like since the 1960's
@@HandbagDivathe rent is about $1000-$1200
Wow people in that city NEED to rally behind her and protest / take legal action to protect her place in that home. Someone needs to stop these crooks from doing such an evil thing and for what ? Business ? ..
94 and bedridden. Where the fuck would she go if they kicked her out?
Rent controlled units was not in their business plan? Well too freakin bad... holy crap thats illegal
Well she didnt buy it so what would be the other option?🤦
But they knew upfront that there were rent controlled units prior to.purchasd and decided to go ahead with the buy. This was not a surprise.
they've had cheap rent for decades, I hope they saved up and invested. Pennies turn to dollars over time. Should have bought houses when they were so cheap and easy to qualify for.
How is that illegal? Rent control deal was made with previous owners. When is someone else’s contract transferable? 👀
You should like a renter.
First, I would like to say it's refreshing to see people like Cecelia, she is awesome. We are dealing with a Me Me Me First Society everyday and people have become aweful. Helen looks amazing for her age and I am going to pray these tenants gets a victory. #peopleovernumbers.
they offered $100,000 to move out of an apartment and they're playing victim? That's insane! Take the money!
Based on averages, each tenant is paying less than $900/month, in San Fransisco, where a studio can be $2,000+/month.
$100,000 is enough to last a few years at market value rent until it’s all gone.
If they were on any kind of assistance, simply having that much disposable money would disqualify them. They would then have to reapply once the money is gone, and that is unlikely to get approved quickly since some of these waiting lists take years for an opening.
In particular, that woman is 94 and bed ridden. She can’t work. Taking that $100,000 would have guaranteed that she would die homeless, or if she had the savings, waste it all paying high rent probably wishing she could die and be done with all this.
They offered $100,000 because they assumed all the tenants would be foolish enough to take it.
Amen 🙏 I’ll pray for you 🙏❤️
Biz is biz to a certain point. This is one of those special situations where u can't remove someone after 80y of living in the same place who is bedridden. It's not like these tenants are drug addicts. These are genuine, pure hearted people. This is just wrong and the city needs to do something.
I agree but they will only allow her to stay because it hurts their reputation. These "investors" building "luxury" units don't care that the local income can't support what they are charging
This world is upside down
I agree with u, except when you implied that people struggling with addiction are somehow not genuine, pure hearted people. Substance abuse is a disease, I've met addicts who are the most generous, kindest, most empathetic ppl I've ever known, who would literally give u the shirt off their back or be willing to suffer through the physical hell of withdrawal just to make sure that u have enough change to get yourself a meal. While it's certainly true that in many cases, renters who are dealing with drug addiction (including alcoholism ofc) can be very unreliable or disruptive, I'm positive that there are plenty of drug addicts who are perfectly rule-abiding tenants who pay rent on time and don't bother their neighbors, in fact, I know of several. It really depends on the severity of their addiction and if the tenant has access to resources (like outpatient rehab or regular counselling) they need in order to keep their addiction manageable & imperceptible to their neighbors and building owners.
@ElleLillian the only addicts I see are the ones breaking in houses, vandalizing property, freeways, littering everywhere and not cleaning up, smashing car windows, burning encampment, stealing cars, defecating in the streets, etc. Shall I continue bc I have a long laundry list... we pour money into housing "homeless" when it is a lost cause as over 80 pcnt relapse and cycles all over again.. that money should be used for our public schools, first responders and teacher pay, fixing the roads. U r more than welcome to fund addicts but not on the majorities dime. U just talk about compassion and scold people who speak the truth, yet u do nothing about it yourself. Why don't u put ur money where your mouth is and house homeless addicts yourself so we don't have to look at their filth
Right on!
I live in Montreal Quebec and a law has recently passed over here that if you are 70 up and have lived in your dwelling for at least ten years they can't kick you out. They would have to buy you out.
they tried that here, she didn't accept the offer.
I hope there’s reasonable protections against everyone getting thrown out when they turn 69.
They tried it said .they refused it
To be exact, there are many exceptions to that protection under article 1959.1 of the Civil code of Quebec, it does not apply to all 70+ tenants. For exemple, if the owner is also 70 years old +, the tenant can be kicked out. Also, for that protection to apply, the 70+ tenant must not earn above the bare minimum income which is determined by law.
Too bad you guys hate English people

Damn, if I was the owner, I’d feel horrible even thinking about asking this lady to move. She doesn’t have much time left. Why can’t they accommodate her?!
Surely they could if they had a conscience.
The same reason why you won't step in yourself and help.
Because they want the building empty so they can make a profit off flipping it.
I know some of these owners have to also use compassion because God is watching how you treat others and money.Isn't everything yeah

@@amb7440soooooo it is okay for someone to take advantage of you because they are 94 years old and has an attachment to the apartment? What if it was a 28 year old millionaire who thinks it is just a great deal to stay there. The fact of matter is, the rent paid is not covering maintenance costs. This is simple math. To call landlord greedy while they are losing money is also a terrible thinking process. The tenants are not going to want to leave a place where they are paying less than what the rent should be, that in principle is greed. To judge others while you are doing the same thing yourself is called hypocrisy. Unless you show us you do not work for profit, please stop calling others terrible. I understand both sides. But how do you keep running the building if the current rent doesn't cover operating expenses/profit. People don't buy rental property without intent of making a profit.
Exactly. I feel for the tenants. If I was a millionaire celebrity this is the type of situation I’d sink my money into. Not designer shoes and handbags. Helping people. But the landlord should not be forced to lose money every month. People need to be charitable with their OWN things. Not volunteer charity with the things of others.
