James Lovelock, Gaia Theory, life on earth as a single organism, each component part contributes to the whole to create balance and symbiosis, each component part has potential, it is that potential that is added to life on Earth, what is humanity's potential, If we understood our true potential it would be easier to apply that potential, in order to know our potential we must understand what it is we are good at, we are believed to be the most self-aware species on earth, self-awareness allows us to learn, learning allows us to understand what might a missing component might be, can life on earth defend itself (comets, asteroids, solar flares, little green men, etc), we demonstratied we are learning that capability by nudging an asteroid and discovering future threats, does life on Earth have a reproductive system, we are on the verge of being capable of taking life elsewhere, we are almost at the point where we understand the necessity of our participation, we are learning, it is easier to make a contribution to the whole if you are completely aware of your potential.
