- Minecraft has cascades now? Since my Minecraft splash mod basing itself on the Minecraft Caves & Cliffs Part II trailer effects has made quite a splash, I received requests to also add the cascade / waterfall mist effect also seen in the trailer, so I did! Enjoy this Minecraft mod for 1.18 while we patiently wait for the Wild Update.

Q: Can you make it Forge / datapack / Bedrock / resource pack?
A: No, don't have the time nor the knowledge to do so.
Q: Not a resource pack? I can't use this on my server then :(
A: You can, it's a client-side mod, meaning you can use it on Vanilla servers with no issue, it's purely cosmetic.
Q: For the one block waterfall you should check the height and-
A: Thanks but I know how to fix it already. I came up with many solutions, but none that didn't ruin performance. So this is a compromise I'm making while I come up with a better more optimized solution.
Q: Mojang is so lazy to not add this, you are amazing!
A: Game development is different from making mods. I'm the only one having the idea and coding it, Mojang devs have a whole set of procedures to go through and satisfy an entire community. Cut them some slack.
add the Block Height line and make it the first one. People keep on asking/suggesting that,,

On Bedrock, there's a marketplace map called "Seaside Story" which adds splashes. There's a potential for this small features to come to the vanilla game. very unlikely, but i think it will be great
I imagine if anything like this is ever added, it would be in an update sort of Bugs and Bees where they focus on cleaning up the code, while adding some minor visual improvements to make sure they don't have a numbered major update that just doesn't add anything.
@@kabobawsome That could be called something like "life and quality update" (which ironically wouldn't include quality of life features)

A possible solution to the tiny waterfalls sideffect is make the size of the waterfall particles vary depending on the amount of blocks that the waterfall has so that tiny "waterfalls" that measure around one block would be very subtle (And I guess add a limit so that you don't get humongous waterfalls when some funny decides to pour water from the highest point of a mountain)
I like this idea a lot
The problem is when the waterfall goes down the side of a hill, making it potentially only 1 block tall at the end.
@@AJman14 water sliding down a hill don´t actually causes a waterfall effect in real life anyway
after all
a waterFALL is created from water FALLING from a high place
@@Jpx0999 I see your point, but it could be speed too. If the water rushes down to the bottom of a hill fast enough, there's going to be splashing. Not as intense as an actual waterfall, but it'll still be there. It'd still be a good compromise though.
This needs more attention. I think that would work well.
it's such a simple thing yet it has such a huge impact on the immersion of the game.
I think we should start a petition to get this in game! This is amazing!

This, Illuminations and some nice shaders makes minecraft feel so much more alive and I love the atmosphere it creates, thank you for another S-tier mod.
The cascade effect should depend on how tall the waterfall is with 2 blocks having no effect and it intensives as the waterfall gets higher
@Amanda Diaz SHUT
nice idea
that'd be a quick fix, to set a multiplicative height distance from the water source to its contact as the limiting factor for generating a waterfall cascade. 1-4 would have no cascade, 5-14 would be tiny and so on.
there would have to be a limit to how intense the cascade can get because without a limit people are going to make waterfalls go from the build limit to bedrock and then crash their own games
Yeah, it could be pretty easy to add, just check if there is another running water block above the water source block and keep going up while checking until there is no running water block above. then determine the effect intensity with the amount of running water blocks there are.
i don't normally comment, but just wanted to say well done! a very simple and impressive mod, keep up the great work, and i look forward to what you do next, not just mod related of course!
1:07
Could add somewhere a limit of how high the flowing water has to be above a source block 🤷♂️
Not that simple, he'd have to recursively iterate the path back to the source block of the fall to count how many there are, which is an intensive operation given how many waterfalls can be loaded at a time. You'd have to do it for each and every one of them simultaneously every frame. Either that or approximate and make a lightweight guess by other block changes near to the water connection if it's a fall or not, but he hasn't figured that out yet. Plus that will probably come with it's own drawbacks and false positives/negatives.

My suggestion: slow and passive puffs of steam when lava rests on water? Not sure how plausible it is but like, flowing lava on stone = make particles? Also maybe the water droplets but for lava waterfalls?
It's probably already been suggested before but i think it would be neat!
you could check the water level of the flowing water block and only if it is max level have it create water particles and sounds. that way you wouldnt get micro waterfalls when placing a water source next to water.
Literally in the FAQ. It's too performance intensive!
@@DaimeneX im pretty sure that referring to people recommending to check the actual height of the block compared to the next water source below. That would indeed be quite resource intensive.
What i mean is to check the water level of the flowing water block which should be as easy as fetching a single integer.

But it should have fewer white particles
OHHHH you are the guy who made illumiations!! I've been a massive fan of that mod, very simplistic but so powerful
that last second realization, i live this, every day
Idea for mini waterfall fix: check if the flowing water also has streaming water above it. Repeat this process 3 times, or however you like, maybe even configurable from the mod itself. Now the waterfall has to be at least 3 blocks high to display the waterfall. If it's not possible, why? (i'm just curius)
Edit: if you read the pinned comment, you will find out that this idea ruins performance, that's why he didn't implement it already.
Actually pretty decent idea. 3-5 blocks high minimum sounds reasonable. Personally I don't think water running off a gradual slope like the right side of 0:31 should be considered as a waterfall. Maybe need to check if adjacent water at 1 Y-level higher is also straight?
Idk but even so, it already looks so good currently tho! I love him. His other videos are so good too.
up
what if the particles scaled with the amount of stream blocks above it, so if there was only 2 or 3 blocks then the waterfall would be quite weak with less particles and opacity on those particles but say something like 15 and you have yourself a lot of particles and max opacity

Im really glad i found you through splashes and now stayed for the rats
you could mod this so that it checks 5 blocks above the water source for flowing water and then it makes a splash. You could then add a function which checks the highest point of flowing water taht is above the water source and scale the splash size to that
You should retexture the waterfall to make all it partially white like in reality, idk if it’s like that in the trailers but it can still be cool!
Ohh you're in for it now. Next you'll be doing waves for ocean biomes.
Also, I hope you can connect with someone from the Bedrock community who can turn those into resource packs.
Continue mec, j'adore ce que tu fais 👌🏼
For the water check;
I havent coded for mc so not sure if you can code it to do within current fov or if its per chunk etc, the bigger the scale the more intensive it is so if you can code it to be fov / player location with a radius then thats beneficial and least intensive.
do a distance check from source to current block (vertical check), once it reaches say 3 (or desired) blocks away break from the the check and return a boolean -> if boolean is true then do new particles, else dont. This only needs to be done to flowing water and not underwater (obviously) but im sure you know how to do that since you have cascades in at all.
0:48 That waterfall looks gorgeous! Just by removing the lava, it would be a perfect landscape for a mountain house :)
Right?! The arc behind is so seamless, and the water is oddly symmetrical, lol. It's almost hard to believe it's naturally generated.

would be cool to see gradient (from default water color to white) in waterfall, which depends on height of a waterfall. I feel like it is impossible, but just as an idea
maybe if the water stream is a certain length it would count it as a water fall? idk much about minecraft modding, great work though!
Pair this with dynamic surroundings and you got yourself some great gameplay.
Just a bit more and he's gonna make a whole new liquid
Milk!
mojang should add this with levels of cascades where the taller the water the more or less particles it produces maybe that could fix the waterfall problem
The craft just keeps getting better and better
It would be interesting if you did some tutorials/walkthroughs on how you did these effects. I think people would like that.
To fix 1:03, just make it so that if the flowing water touching more than one source block it doesn't cause the cascade
But what about waterfalls that are more than 1 block in width
@@raffel08108 only if flowing water is touching a *source block*.
You should do like the splashes for the cascades too. Like the higher the waterfall the larger the cascades. Also can you do waves? Like throwing stones in the sea
U can fix the cascade issue for being above a source block regardless of height by adding height requirements, if x5/6 blocks high then waterfall=true. Also you can add a function factoring in the width and volume of the water fall, or really just the volume, if the volume is greater above a certain limit, then bigger particle affects with increasing density, and adversely the smaller the volume of the waterfall, the smaller the particle affects. You can even code in different sounds according to these limits, big waterfall and small waterfall.
Ive found that the 1 block tall water fall effect is actually quite good at making rivers look more dynamic and more natural, it gives a good rushing water feeling which is quite good for rivers that are going over slopes, a more common occurrence with the caves and cliffs world generation.
To everyone who thinks that the one block waterfall should be fixed
We can utilize the particle effects
These are very small changes and yet they look good. it's so good as a visual improvement and it stays to the vanilla look too, keep it up man!
To complete the mod you should add seafoam in beaches and shorelines
With the problem about 1 block tall waterfalls: I would think you could check to see if the block above it isnt watrt, and if it is then check to see if the blocks up and to the sides of it arent water, and if so render that not a waterfall. Just an idea!
