This is what you call acting. Nicole Kidman portrayed a role that is completely the exact opposite of how wee see her and perceive her to be in real life. And she did it well!
The best way to describe Nicole Kidman's performance is "haunting". It's actually quite creepy at some points. The rest of the cast were good too. Some very powerful acting in the movie from Kidman.
Just like in the shadow of the Moon, the moral of this story is love and protect your children and be there for them instead of being locked into past trauma, better said than done I know but you know what you have to do.
The film is incredible. Her work in it was interesting and rather believable. Some of the editing was harsh leaving much of it with unseen bits and pieces that would had been satisfying details to watch. I would had preferred seeing her clearly sending the money to that idiot bf, the police finding Petra, her daughter hugging with her stepfather etc. etc. I found the moment Erin came upon the bank robbery after tailing Petra a bit out of nowhere. It needed some kind of interplay building for the audience to show more shock to Erin. Instead it felt rushed and far too documentary style. Her death at the end was icy and depressing but totally worked for her character. Furthermore the vendetta route no way out corner she painted her self into did not need to happen but it likely did so the other idiot police could not ruin it. She wanted him dead as he was baiting her for the money he knew she had taken. I think the way the Chris/Erin thing was shot and played was believable and moving. It was a success her “mission” yet it was a teensy bit of Pyrrhic victory. One of Kidman’s best roles for sure. Vendetta, narc, gangland, survivalist, tracking a killer genre films are always incredible subjects because these situations and lives really do happen in the USA.
Very good movie let down by an overly complex script. Plot holes aside and few other minor quibbles, I found it a great character study. Had it focused on the characters more instead of the plot, we could be talking about a major movie instead of a very good one.
I can't understand a word she says & putting subtitles on my tv & the dialogue is a joke due to the heavy ludicrous makeup & shows how little she pronounces. Gave up especially after the yucky hand job with whoever he was, mumbling mumbling.. Not a scooby.
The movie is a slow burn with too many flashbacks of the younger Erin Bell (Nicole Kidman) being an undercover cop, in the present day 17 years later Erin is still a cop but she looks filthy and the wig is really bad, she looks old, tired and unconvincing as she plods through the drawn out story of some sort of revenge for what happened years before. The present day story is set over several days, she never changes her clothes , she drinks, and the makeup even includes liver spots, she's clearly injured too and says little as she is the strong silent type apparently. How is she still a detective? She should have been sacked years ago Erin has been so hell bent on getting to the present day story, she has been a bad Mother to her 16 year old daughter, who clearly hates her and has no happy memories of her Mommy Dearest, the kid is as messed up as Erin. The movie is dull, boring and badly acted, reviewers saying this is brilliant are easily pleased or just idolize Kidman , who looks a lot like present day Jane Fonda in this farce of a film.
I see you really didn't follow the movie at all. she specialized in UNDERCOVER WORK. Given that involves drugs and in general unhealthy habits, and combine that with her feeling of guilt I can see exactly how she'd end up that way.
The biggest thing is the mumbling dialogue, like Clint Eastwood on downers. She hardly moves her lips with the heavy stupid makeup. The hand job, why?Terrible rubbish, switching over to watch the excellent Bourne film instead.
It's a solid movie in a number of regard... but WTF do Americans have to ruin the last two-to-three minutes of their movies with dripping sentimentality?
I wouldn't go that far, but it's certainly out of it's time. Mark says it's full of 70s nihilism, and that is true, but the genre has moved on since then. You can't really just tell a 70s crime thriller anymore; there needs to be some level of subversion or self-awareness to elevate it above what we know and expect from those movies. And I spent the whole film waiting for that moment where it would show its hand and take that step above its premise and its predecessors. And that just never came.
Kidman's acting is trying to behave and sound like the guys cops from boring 70's movies. Her and the film, both completely lack credibility. A copy of the most boring stereotypes. I felt really disappointed, especially after Kermode's promising review. But then three times out of ten, I feel like Kermode and I have watched completely different films. (in the case of the other seven he is spot on, and of course his style is a great entertainment in itself:)

The ending killed me. I can't remember the last time a movie ending and i just sat there.. kinda of in shock and awe. I was a mess of tears.
I thought she was a miscast.
Nicole Kidman should get an Academy Award Nomination for this role, I love this movie!!!
Dude! Serpico, French Connection, 70s films and Ferraras Bad Lieutenant referenced by Mark....I'm seeing this movie ASAP!!!!!!!!!!
Did you see it?
Loved this. So involving. Nicole was brilliant.
I could not take my eyes off her for the entire movie. She is an incredible actress

Kusama is criminally underrated. Girl fight, Jennifer's Body, Destroyer, The Invitation. Producers should be throwing themselves at her.

Top 5 Nicole Kidman performances
5. To Die For
4. Eyes Wide Shut
3. Before I Go To Sleep
2. Big Little Lies
1. The Others
I also love her performance as the lady who adopts the lost Indian boys ...based on a real story. With Dev Patel. Is it 'Leo'?
I get rid of Birth and put in Rabbit Hole.
She’s also great in the 1993 thriller Malice. A completely trashy, somewhat forgettable movie but she’s convincingly malicious in it
5. BMX Bandits
4. BMX Bandits
3. BMX Bandits
2. BMX Bandits
1. BMX Bandits
Birth and Birthday Girl
Watched it on Netflix just in passing & what a surprise " Brilliant ! bare recognise Nicole at first ...Real good .

I like the brevity of this review. (No sarcasm)
Fantastic movie, kermode nails this review
What a film. Epic.

I agree
Sounds a bit like 'True Detective'
Best film of the last decade...genius!
Why don't more people talk about the gaping plot holes in this movie?
Such as?

The story was good, Kidman ' s acting amazing. But her makeup is horrible which makes it sometimes hard to take the character seriously.
Sebastian Stan Stans represent!

@@dand2810 Ruined the first 117 minutes of this one as well.
I take it you didn't like this film?
@@GuyWithACamera23 There, that link is my own review of the film, and a review of mark kermode's review. Enjoy ;)
