After you copy, go back to your google doc, click Edit, Paste without formatting. That way you don't get all the excel boxes

Not quite what I had in mind, a bit misleading.. this is just basically how to use a spreadsheet to alphabetise a list.. which most people already know how to do.
I have since found better way, inside google docs, click extensions > addons > get addons > search for "sort paragraphs" and download.
Then simply highlight the text you wish to sort, click "extensions" in the ribbon, then click sort paragraphs, it will give you the option to sort A-Z or Z-A.
