For any future adhesion problems like this, id recommend goo gone and a plastic scraper thats safe for cars
I was thinking the same thing.
@@dlenderman11 Granted there are probably better adhesive products but that was always my go to and it never messed up paint even after forgetting I applied it 8 hours ago.
Only thing that works I used goo gone and a microfiber towels takes some elbow grease and time.
@@argfirearms871 At first a microfiber towe was the way to go for me till I discovered plastic scrapers. A buddy of mine had one in his truck and I asked if i could borrow it to try it. Gave him $3 for it lol
@@imashd2629 the scrapers don’t scratch the car? (Not that it’s a problem if you are going to literally polish it later)
Wow I'm surprised you guys didn't do a follow-up on him finishing this car you probably get a lot more subscribers
Chevrolet should bring the Chevelle back, it could be a cheaper alternative to the Camaro.
If they build it by hand
Chevy, ford and dodge are canceling their muscle car lines starting 2024 so that prob wont happen unless its an EV.
@@AdrenalineTheory that’s what I heard too
@@AdrenalineTheory That is interesting to hear, I thought those cars all sold really well. Ford can't kill off the Mustang though. That has been a staple in the Ford lineup since 1964. That friggin electric crossover doesn't count.
@@jundialhaqiqa9907 If some of the known models do stick around, they wont ever be the same. Selling well isnt always what makes the decision. Chevy is canning the camaro, dodge is canning the charger/challenger and ford will kill the mustang. Its just how things are. Everything will go EV.
You guys did an absolutely fantastic job bringing that car back! Dried tape that has etched paint is the pits to deal with. The owner has a beautiful car he should be proud of. I’m sure he’s going to love having that beauty back on the road when finished.
Fresh paint for sure
I would recommend swapping the bumper to a 1971 chevelle bumper. It matches the headlights better. It has 4 lights, just like the front.
What kind of wax do you use for your one step or two step?
Great job on that green shevel
Muy buen trabajo que hermoso auto saludos desde Argentina Temperley
Nice job bro 🙌🏻
Maybe some goo gone might’ve worked to get rid of the adhesive. I’ve used it on a bunch of surfaces that has had adhesive etched into the paint for many years and so far so good I mean it hasn’t done any damage to speak of
DL brand hand cleaner is nice and thick and could be smeared on and not fall off. It's kind of oily and would absorb into the adhesive.
I had a sign shop for thirty years so and I used it for all kinds of sticker goo. That stuff will remove VINYL INK off your hands, so a little tape gum is no problem. next best thing would be mineral spirits. Lay a paper towel on the area and give it a squirt of spirits and let it soak for ten minutes.
Two cars I would like to have back from my youth. A 1965 Ford Thunderbird Landau and a 1968 Pontiac Grand Prix.
Congratulations on the 200K; actually I see 206,000 subscribers.
I’ve been there before in detailing it happens....Too bad you guys didn’t have Solvent or paint thinner but it still looks amazing you guys do excellent work much love and respect from Jersey
Wax and grease remover would have probably help but you guys have done an awesome job on this SS Chevelle
300k with your kind of videos probably you'll reach 1million
That would be awesome
@@WDDetailing youre past 1 million now, amazing stuff
I will say that maybe WD40 to loosen the tape adhesive and then soap and water to clean off the WD40.
Looking good 👊🏽👊🏽🗣
What are you guys using to clean the tires and what what tire dressing do you use? Does the dressing get all over the car when it’s driven down the road?
Subscribed guys
Paint still in good Condition.
Goo Gone would work perfectly. Back in March when I had to put plastic on my door Bc the towing company bent my door backwards I put duct tape on my paint n couldn’t get it off. I used a foam applicator pad n Goo Gone n everything came off with no problem. If u have an orbital polisher if works 10x faster
I would rather have a car from 1966 - 1972 I’ve owned SS Chevelles, Judge GTO, Roadrunners and mustangs to mention a few from that timeline and they were the most memorable automobiles I’ve ever owned.
Clay bar3 with mineral sprites 2000 wet sand
It blows my mind that someone would pay for a quality paint job, leave the car sitting half exposed to the elements, then wrap it in newspaper. Literally seems like the worst idea ever to "protect" a new paint job. The owner is lucky that idea didn't completely ruin the paint.
I have a 1970 ss chevelle
I would kill for that car.
An early 1970 MGB would fit more conveniently in my garage
No excuses, always expect the worse and have your products. Go back and finish what you started.
Only thing that works I used goo gone and a microfiber towels takes some elbow grease and time.
how much wood it cost to do a 2005 mone carlo im in pa
A Lil acetone would of been great for that tape line
Always go back 2 finish
I would pick american built car:)
I have a saab rn and its very good, light and handles great but the quality isnt really there. The engine is a 65 hp Ford v4 with a tiny transmission that likes to grenade, the doors is hollow and needs a bit of force to lock and the fit isnt there at all.
With the old american built cars, everything is heavy and built tough, like the doors sounds so good clicking together and the fit is perfect, and allways built with a big engine.
This is old post for comments, anyway..
-This guy calls you says he has a Chevelle in a shop that hasn't been touched in 10-15yrs. He wants you to detail it. You should of brought every trick in the detailer's book. Talk about going in blind. There's a dozen things that'll get that old ass tape glue off. "If" he told you the paint WAS new when it was parked, it should of been a no brainer to expect to 'wet sand' it. You could of hit up a local parts store for those materials. I don't think you wanted to take that much time on it.
Yes, it looks great. But it could look much better. Thing is, is that'll a shit ton of work for a non running vehicle..
GooGone would of took that adhesive right off 🫡
Ernest seems like the nicest guy I've seen on youtube in years!
Well I just found my new favorite color of Chevelles, that color is amazing
Agreed 🤩
I was thinking Bullitt. Awesome movie need to watch again.
I would like to see a follow up on this car when it’s completed
You should have over a 1 million subscribers your vids are that great.
Thank you so much!
@@WDDetailing Im retired so this is how i spend my Friday mornings.
We are happy to be apart of your routine !
@@WDDetailing as far as what I would do with a customer if I didn’t have the right tools. I ALWAYS bring ALL my tools to the customer so it can’t happen
Tar and glue remover would have probably helped remove the tape
Valet pro is good✌️just removed old dealer stickers on my gfs rear window with it
American built, I want a car from my own country, and hard to beat American muscle
One day, you should have Ernest visit the WD shop in Cleveland. If he gets the opportunity to have the Chevelle restored, it would be great if he drives it out to make a cameo appearance.
Beautiful car. Needs to be on the roads again. I agree with other commenters that this paint color is a keeper.
So many models of the 70's were great, in pretty much every country & brand... Hard to pick an absolute favorite.
Sweet car.....3m tape rem9ver disc on a drill will take that tape off
That’s exactly what we needed but didn’t have, or had time to go get.
We traveled 6 hours for this detail and only had one day to film. It was extremely frustrating!
Part ll, at your shop when the car is back together???
As a young girl in the 70s I had one of these beauties as my first car . At the time didn’t know what I had unfortunately I regret letting it go to this day
This was released perfectly alongside the new Grand Tour special, especially considering Richard Hammond uses a Camaro SS!
Who ever painted that car most likely early 80's must used some quality Paint to hold up to all that moisture when paper was laying on it. There was Some PPG paint that came out that was single stage that acted like 2 stage with option put clear on it.. that stuff was awesome. That Painter saved that car. but WD brought back to Life... now can we get a real car cover bring back to the streets....
I’ve used WD-40 to get duct tape residue off of cars. The tape had been on the roof holding some 3mil plastic over a leaking sunroof. The had put it on there until they had the money to have the sunroof replaced and resealed (took a couple of years, but the original duct tape and plastic sheeting worked). The WD-40 worked like a champ. After removing the residue I immediately washed, clay barred, compounded, then waxed. There were no visible lines where the paint had been. So basically… WD-40. LOL
We tried wd 40, road paint remover, all purpose solvent, and even a few other more aggressive chemicals ! A rubber wheel on a dremel was what we really needed
@11:18 - I would suggest using WD-40. You can let it sit on the surface for a few minutes, then literally go back and rub it off with your fingers or a bristle brush, then go back and wash it to remove the residue from the WD-40.
For me, North American. Full sized. My dream is a 71 Mercury Marquis Brougham with all the options. Beautiful, comfortable, and roomy.
Wet sand and polish would have worked perfectly for those tape lines
Great video!
On the clear coat, the only thing I know would be wet sanding with 1000, 1500, then 2000. This will make the clear very thin, be careful. Then buff, which I saw you do in the vid. It is a balancing act and some compromise no matter what.
Great job!
Unless someone had put a clear coat on this car, there is no clear coat
I think the new owner should start a channel documenting the restoration
Can't really enjoy the video because of the different types of lighting in each shot. Would be a very nice video with similar lighting in each shot. The sun and shadow destroys the video in some points. Other than that, very nice detailing!
Hey Does Ernest have you tube , So we can see the car again. Good Job WD. Georgia mad mike. New Sub
Being in Philadelphia, there was probably a store nearby with car products? But other than that, great video
American muscle all the way,70 Chevelle,70 Mustang,70 Charger,69 Camaro,71 Torino
The Golden Age of Detroit Muscle.
Touch base with Patrick Glen Nicholls for authentication of your SS
WD-40 is surprisingly great at removing glue residue from paint surfaces.
Just leave for a few minutes then wipe off with a microfibre towel. Then just wash as normal to remove the WD-40 residue.
Me: No way he can restore this
WD Detailing: Hold my chevelle
He didn’t restore it he cleaned it
Wow! Just freaking wow! You guys are like magicians! That Chevelle looks incredible regardless of how many obstacles were in your way.
I had the same problem with tape residue on a '69 GTO that was in storage and discovered Goo Gone, some elbow grease, and a lot of patience can work wonders.
I know this job wasn't easy. If it was, everyone would be doing it. But you guys knocked it out of the park.
One bit of advice for your next job: Expect the unexpected. Always go in thinking it's the worst job you can imagine and that you'll need every possible tool.
Waiting for M.A.D. Detailing to comment. Subscribed to both channels and love the content!
I’d want this car. I had a 71 Malibu 350 that I learned to drive on and loved that car. I tried to get my dad to buy the SS 396 with a 4 on the floor in the original green with the racing stripe but the insurance for a 15.5 year old was too much - over $400 per year vs about $100 on the Malibu with an automatic. I remember the sticker on the SS 396 was $3,800 and on the Malibu was $3,500.
Hey WD, I’ve been a fan of your videos for awhile now. However my only complaint is your videos are too short! I feel like we miss a lot of stuff or the scenes get cut short. Maybe it’s just me.
Some adhesive remover or soapy water with a plastic razor blade works great
Gasoline and water would have work to get adhesive off car
WD40 is great for removing adhesive
Hey terrific job cleaning good old American muscles
Gasoline got to take it right out without damaging the paint
Answering your question: I was a young teen when this was new. I think I'd go for an American car, but I'd pick it carefully. 1970 was about the last year for powerful, good looking American cars for quite a while!
I moved to Italy for 4 years starting in 1970 and Italian cars of the era just didn't measure up.
Nice looking result. I noticed that you didn't do much with the wheels, then I saw that they were mismatched and thus probably temporary wheels.
Dudes go back and get the inside, This cars deserves you guys, God Bless , & Happy Holidays. Ernest where you at man. Love that CAR. 2 new subs
I got my license in 81, so my first few cars wereGM68-Impala4-dr,307-72 Cutlus supreme-350 rocket-81Buick Regal Limited-350,-then beginning in College I went into The ultimate Driving Machine several models,,so now 35 yrs later, I have a 74C-20454,67 Buick Rivera-430 wildcat, in storage but what’s in my drive way -2000 750IL-V-12, then my daily driver Accent, so I’m not a good person to answer your question sir.👍Great job as always!!
This appears to be a cowl induction car. If it’s legit……there were only 28,888 of them built in 1970. All SS 396 or SS 454. Put it back the way she was born….you will never regret it. Just finishing up one of my own.
- Ronsonol lighter fluid should work along with thumbnails or fingernails to remove that old masking tape. Goo gone is too harsh and toxic !
Love my Chevelles have owned them all but a 64 had a 65 almost same as a 64 owned over 300 of these up to 81 best driving of the GM,s chevy olds buicks pontiacs love the way they drive great VIDEO Detail Geek
I think that a rubber eraser wheel, attached to a drill, would easily take the tape off. I have used it to remove a 16 year old car dealer sticker that had completely faded. A little goo gone in between also helped.
This is a car I definitely want XD! it's similar to the 1st car I ever used playing Forza Horizon 2 on xbox 360...
I would take domestic(American)and if I got to choose probably a 65 or 72 Bronco, 68 Fastback, or 67 or 65 Thunderbird. I forgot about my favorite car of all time, the best vehicle ever produced possibly, 1971 Mach 1.
For me, North American. Full sized. My dream is a 71 Mercury Marquis Brougham with all the options. Beautiful, comfortable, and roomy.
Nothing would have removed thst tape without damage to the paint. The paint was already damaged, and tfying to smooth it fully would have gone right through the clear.
I love FORD cars! I think it is one of the greatest car manufactures.
It’s a Chevrolet Chevelle
Noob. lol
Lemon Oil. One thing I've used in the past to remove tape adhesive is lemon oil. Don't know if it would work in this situation, but it's worked for me in the past.
Mini cooper "s " in Monte Carlo Rally trim
Hi from Australia I've got a81 f100 for 20yrs an 76 f250 xlt for 33yrs both restored an I own them for lots of reasons an no I'd never have a European or Asian made car having worked in automotive industry made me see how much I love the old cars an I also love old cars from the late 50s an up to the late 70s early 80s before they changed everything an if I could I'd collect Buick Pontiac Chevrolet Oldsmobile an Chrysler dodge also
Question of the day. I recently bought a 71 Chevelle from a cousin of mine. Its a complete rust bucket right now. I currently have it at a custom body shop being restromod. I plan on driving it cross country with the Ms. If I were to get something foreign I think It would be a 240Z
Could rubbing alcohol have removed the adhesive?
Yes, it would have. Along with a dozen other options.
From the 60s through early 70s was the high point of American Muscle cars so definitely American during this period. 😁
Love the content on all your videos. WD 40 may have helped remove the adhesive tape, it's worked for me. Keep doing what makes you guys awesome.
Can you please drive down to Los Angeles...WE NEED YOU.
I'm restoring 1973 Datsun 240 that needs your healing hands
I’m only 19 and I drive a 1969 nova it’s in really good condition with no rust
Keep her. I miss my 1970 GTO every day. I should have never sold her.
17 and have been driving a 64 Electra 225 daily since I was 15. Great ass car
Such a sick car
Good ole McGuire’s cleaner wax liquid would’ve removed it without damaging anything. I’ve used it to save many a paint job from a million different things. It works miracles.
I have same car .. same colors .. in ohio
I love the Chevelles and the Impalas from this era. Love the colour and striping on this one. What a horrible thing to do to it taping on newspaper. What were they thinking. Anyway given what you had there you did a remarkable job cleaning it up.
this guy really got a chevelle painted and then taped news paper to it?????? he should be banned from owning any cars PERIOD....I hope Ernest got a really good deal and puts it back together.
You couldn't drive to Home Depot and buy some Goo Gone and plastic razor blades or call a local body shop and see what they recommend? That's embarrassing! You need to go back and finish the job properly for your reputations sake!
People are really out of their minds the way they treat cars like this. Then the guy plays hardball with the man who wants to buy it? The car is a disaster the way it’s been stored! People are weird. Newspaper covering the car? That’s bizarre. If you’re going to do work remotely you need to have a way to bring all your stuff to the site. Very disappointing
I wish y’all could help Jason with Rebuild Rescue. He’s also a RUclipsr. He was recently injured and has a airplane that needs a major detailing. It would be a good thing and could help him out.
I have original 1974 Pontiac TransAm

"What year is this"? If you don't know a 70 chevelle ss when you see one you aren't a car guy smh!
