  • The original Game Boy's screen hasn't kept up with the times. The Funnyplaying V2 screen replacement is a great option to bring the system into the modern era. This video covers the replacement and installation of the screen kit!

    I still have my GBC from when I was a kid. Same thing with its screen. I'll upgrade it one of these days.

      Same! I'm looking to update my GBC at some point as well. These kit screens have gotten so good any more it's definitely worth it.

    That's a very tasteful upgrade, and as you said it makes it more like how our rose-tinted memories recall it being like. The screen resolution must be really high to allow for that sub-pixel grid effect, so that's pretty nice. Great video as well! Glad you were finally able to finish it!

      @RiksRandomRetro  2 года назад

      Yeah, again I wanted to just sort of enhance the system like I remembered it. And these screen kits and shells are so good it's a nice upgrade to make.
      Rolling right into the next video... I hope!

    Well Rik, you made me want to spend more money. Well done....
    Anyone else have the Super Mario Land music in their head the whole time during this video?

      Do do do... do. Do dodo do do. Dododo do do doo doo do...
      Nah not stuck at all.
      But yes we'll worth the money!

    This was a very satisfying video. Really took me into the experience of doing the upgrade myself, which I still need to do, but I'll have more confidence to do it now. I think it's absolutely worth it, you know how we operate. I much rather have an updated gameboy than one of those playdate things that are trending, so no question about it, the upgrade is definitely worth the 70 bucks of parts. I'm glad you're making videos again, my friend. Thanks for another one.

      Agreed. Very satisfying video. I don't mind the streams, however I do prefer dedicated videos more. This seems like a pretty easy mod to do. Soldering two wires is a piece of cake. I'm going to keep my childhood GameBoy stock, but I have a second unit that I'll do this mod to for sure!

      Thanks for watching! No doubt we'll worth it for me. Makes me want to do more of my devices with new screens!

      Great thanks for watching! It's a well worth upgrade for sure. Such a difference while keeping the spirit of the system intact!

    Like you I still have my childhood GameBoy. I'd love to do this upgraded to my GameBoy. Do you have a link to where you purchased everything? As a side note a few years ago I did a screen mod to my Sega GameGear. It looks amazing!

    • @RiksRandomRetro
      @RiksRandomRetro  2 года назад +1

      I'd love to mod my Game Gear too but that one seems quite a bit more involved! I updated the description for where I got it which was directly from funnyplaying.com. Unfortunately it doesn't look to be in stock right now which is a bit of a bummer. Other retailers may have the kit still though.

      @@RiksRandomRetro Indeed, it was a little bit of work, but totally worth it. I went with the McWill screen for my GameGear. Batteries last way longer now plus the color is amazing. I also recapped my entire GameGear. That was a PITA compared to the screen mod upgrade LOL.

    Great video, Rik. IKEA batteries huh? Nice touch! :p

      Agreed about the video. As for IKEA batteries, I actually get my coin cell batteries from there LOL.

    I appreciate the video. Can you provide links of what exactly I would need to buy to do this. I want to upgrade my old Game Boy for my son. Thanks

    Looks like a great "refurbishment" kit. I've got an old gameboy color (pocket maybe) that needs a new shell, maybe I'll make a video when I finally get a channel going lol

    • @RiksRandomRetro

      Yeah for sure go ahead! Never been a better time to do screen, or case mods on any of the Game Boys and definitely worth filming it!

      It's a great option as far as screen goes! But yeah you are right unfortunately it doesn't look like Funnyplaying have any in stock right at the moment. There may be other retailers that carry it as well. I haven't tested any other kits of course but this one is great.

    The low refresh rate is actually used in some games for transparency effects.

      That's right! It's really cool to see devs back then using the limitations of the platform to do some neat tricks.

    I should really do this with my old gameboy. Have the gameshark, protective case and external battery pack for it. :)

    • @RiksRandomRetro
      @RiksRandomRetro  2 года назад

      Nice! Sure has made me want to play it a whole heck of a lot more. I had the magnifying glass with a light as well as speaker add on when I was a kid. I'll have to dig them out next time I have a chance because it looks absurd with everything attached!

      @@RiksRandomRetro Nice! I wonder if I can find a replacement shell for the gameshark. At some point it was all stored in a chest with random items and somehow came into contact with some incense which somehow made the plastic melt/liquify.
