Concerning the loot on the ground, the game is designed so you only pick up items that are worth your time. Selling them is not worth it.
So generally you pick up item when :
    - They're better than what you use (obviously) or may be usefull for an alt
    - They are good base for crafting
    - They have rare affixe you want to get for crafting (you can break the items to get these)
To help with this, there is an in-game filter (Ctrl+F) quite complete, that let you filter by rarity, item type, affixes on the item, etc.

Ok so the first thing I can tell you is try to use the loot filter, it's legit the best loot filter I've seen (really intuitive too, press shift F and start customizing). You can discard the items you dont need and prioritize the ones you do. Also, use the loot filter to find affixes that you think will fit your build, then use runes of shattering to gain affixes and craft every 10 levels or so

Aside from PoE the other game I played with one was Nordicandia and you could look for a filter someone else posted and use it. Makes it good for new players so they can get a filter for various stages of the game from within the game.

@@NyxVellum this is at least part of the reason the loot feels lackluster early on because the crafting system is the best of any ARPG made before (maybe not as complex as Poe but 100 times easier to use). Making your own Filter is super easy as well so you only see the items you want to see. Also once you make a second character you can use the affixes collected before to improve your weapons in the early game

The idea is that you use the "Runes of Shattering" to break down gear with Affixes that are useful for you. For example, you might drop a 2Hand sword that has massive crit chance, you can use rune of shattering to break it into crit chance shards, which then you can use to upgrade your daggers. There is a pretty in-depth item filter that can help hide some of the junk

I think not feeling the 3% attackspeed is a fair take but...
3% attackspeed from passive tree then 3% attackspeed from skill specialization makes a difference and both are leveled separately so it's not hard to get 18% attackspeed if 3 points are invested in each tree. Also, you can have a 3% attackspeed in general in passives then invest in damage to skill specialization to balance out the stats and not limiting the points for one stats.

    - However many masteries exist in this game is the amount of times I've fought that bird dude boss and I didn't once notice it was a bird dude on a bird until you pointed it out.
    - I tell this to all the new LE players I encounter because all of us ARPG enjoyers have preferred input schemes and the mechanic isn't obvious but there's an alternate left click damage mode: If you click those little feet on your action bar, you can set an alternate movement mode where left click attacks if it can attack, else it moves. There was an issue where holding shift to lock your character in place in this mode didn't work, but it was fixed very recently. Try it out if that's something which interests you.
    - Rogue is fun and definitely worth sticking to (Bladedancer is my favorite), just note that it's missing a skill on each mastery. If you go back to the character selection menu and look at the skills for each mastery, on the right hand side you'll notice that Rogue and all of the Rogue masteries have only 4 skills but the other class masteries have 5. Just letting you know in case you try another class and wonder why it feels a little more powerful. EHG has said they intend to implement these missing skills by 1.0.
    - Regarding your issue with small increments on passives: do not be deceived by those small numbers. The increments may look small, but pay more attention to the word after the small number. Does it say "Added"? That's a flat increase. Does it say "Increased"? That's an additive multiplier to base+added. Does it say "More"? That's completely multiplicative of (base+added)*increased. For example; if your base melee damage is 100, and you have the modifiers '+20 Melee damage', '30% increased Melee damage', '10% Increased Melee damage', '+8% More Melee damage' and '+5% More Melee damage', you'd be doing (100 + 20) * (1 + .3 + .1) * (1 + .08) * (1 + .05) = *191* melee damage (it's rounded up). I know my example seems tame but I didn't want to litter this comment with a giant math formula, the reality is you can have dozens of sources of these modifiers. The in-game guide explains it more (press G). There are also other ways to gain multipliers based on your core attributes and the "added damage efficency" of the skill you're applying the damage with, and you may also encounter strange modifiers like "makes this skills damage scale with increases to uncapped Fire Resistance" You can also shred resistances, and resistances can go negative in this game, which is another way of increasing damage.
    - The max level in the game is 100, not 50. Each level grants you a passive point, so you can have 115 passive points in total (15 from side missions). Only the right half of your chosen mastery passive tree is exclusive. You can invest points into the left half of any mastery tree (and unlock the skills that come with that). The max level for each skill is 20, but you can find "+x to " modifiers which allow you to exceed this cap.
    - Everything other commenters have said about not picking up all the loot that drops and using the item filter etc is spot on, but having watched many "new player tries LE for the first time" videos I do think that LE needs to do a better job of making these itemization tips more obvious to the new player, so I don't actually disagree with your criticism on itemization. Just because itemization is good, doesn't mean it cannot still *feel* bad on a first impression... which is a kind of bad spot to be in for an ARPG imo. You can't fix the "itemization is bad" problem when itemization truly is good (and it is, LE probably has the best itemization of any ARPG I've ever played, and I've played them all), so what do you do when new players don't see the good and just discredit it as bad? It has to be more in-your-face. Even if it's something like a glaringly annoying popup that shows up whenever the first class-restricted item you cannot equip drops that starts a "how to use the loot filter" tutorial wizard, it'd be an improvement.
    - Regarding microtransactions. There is an MTX shop, which is cosmetic-only, in the online version of the game. EHG has publically made promises to never charge real money for things like stash tabs, character rerolls, or stat-affecting items.

I can think of Atleast 2 quests that directly push the player to interact with the forge, because crafting is an important part of the game.
But arguably the most important thing for the player is the loot filter, as demonstrated by watching this video, he was getting flooded with useless items that cluttered up everything.
And yet the game has zero quest or tooltip to point a new player in the direction of the loot filter. I remember when I was playing the first time, the way I discovered it even existed was by reading through the keybind options page. Like what are the chances I would have pressed shift+f by accident? The game never once tells you to press shift+f.
This is a huge oversight by EHG in my opinion. Sometimes when you know a game so very well it becomes very difficult to put yourself in the mindset of a brand new player. They need to pay attention to videos like this.

Not sure I agree with the complaint about passives only being small state changes. I can't think of any ARPG where every single skill point you spend provides some big changes, especially in the early game. Pretty much all of the big ones (D4, PoE, Grim Dawn) have small increments that add up to something big once your build starts to come together.

He didn't touch the crafting system, how it should be used.
The +1 base dmg is actually huge, when he craft himself a weapon on level 5 with +100%+++ extra dmg.
The game do not aim "billions" as dmg numbers in late game, the progress is far more smooth out.
What also isn't visible on the first glance, how bleed, poison and co is handled.
+100% on bleed means, every hit adds 1 stack of bleed.
+50% on bleed, every hits adds 0,5 stack of bleed.
And if you could see in the video, skill add +50% bleed, than +40% bleed, your items add +120% bleed, and you guess it.
If you run +800% bleed, that every hit of your flurry high attack speed build adds +8 stack of bleed.

People get used to games that make them cream their pants right from the start every time they click a button, so it's not surprising to see this reaction here, really. This could easily come off as a snide remark and a disrespect, but I mean it as a realistic reflection on the trends in game design. That really is what a lot of games try to do. They need to get their hooks in you so fast before your attention is drawn elsewhere, so it has become the norm for people to expect impactful rewards right at the beginning. I can't really blame the player here, but I also don't blame the designers. The industry and the attention economy of the internet are the real culprits, and there's not a whole lot to be done about it. It just is what it is.

Grim Dawn - Adventure beginning to end, the only one of the 4 that feels like a journey.

I recently played both Last Epoch and Path of Exile for the first time. I played until about level 50 or so I think in Last Epoch before trying out Path of Exile and I've decided I probably wont go back to Last Epoch. I think the story telling is definitely better in Last Epoch but I found I was having way more fun with Path of Exile. The mobs felt better and the skill system / tree also felt way better. I love that when I put a point into the tree on PoE it's generally noticeable but in Last Epoch I felt you don't really notice the changes.
And since both are graphically similar, though I would say I think PoE is edges out a bit especially in the dungeon designs. Being that I'm new to both I'm probably going to focus my time playing PoE. I might revisit this game in the future if/when I want to change it up.

@@tobiasbuhl2037 I have only been playing PoE for about 3 weeks now. I'm in the middle of Act 6 and so far really liking it. I'm using the little bit of time left in this league to experiment around with a build and learn how everything works in the game. Which I think I have a pretty good grasp of now. I'm going to be playing the next league with a friend who has also only just started with the hopes that everything we learned will make a difference.
Right now I have a level 56 Elemenatalist. Not using any guides whatsoever since I think figuring stuff out is half the fun and so far whatever build I've been making has been working out great. Though once I hit Act 6 I realized I definitely need to spec into more health and shield. I'm pretty much a glass cannon haha.

@@shane75776 ooh cool, slight warning you might hit a wall, its kinda a tradition in PoE that the first character people try to make themselves sucks, especially in endgame, since the campaign is joked around as the "tutorial" in PoE. But these things are what makes PoE such a awesome game, its incredibly hard to figure out, but once you do its heavily rewarding, again i have played 6 years and there are certain build types i simply avoid because i do not understand their damage scaling while also making it tanky enough for higher tier maps, also sometimes when other players tell me stuff i get baffled that such things are possible, but it pretty much has endless replayablity and as the founder says "once you reach maps, we then own you" almost everyone i know who plays it comes back to the game for league start.

Been playing this game almost five years now, been great to see it grow and improve. It’s a really good one to alternate with PoE between leagues and such. Awesome devs, good community. PoE is definitely the more complete game and has a decade or so of expansion and league content piled up, so I’d only really recommend Last Epoch to arpg veterans that want something new or someone that wants something less complex than PoE.

Even us who've played PoE since its closed beta agree that Last Epoch does things like its early game and crafting way better than PoE does. lol
There are things that are not explained really well in either game (like loot filters, as many commenters have already mentioned LE has probably the best loot filtering system in any aRPG out there. It is intuitive, fast to set up and can be changed on the fly.) The actual level up passives are not as impactful as the skill passive trees, it is pretty similar design philosophy as to how PoE passives are pretty bland outside of its notable and keystone passives and the actual power comes from the gem socketing and gear.
But the absolute best part of LE for me is the fluidity of the gear upgrading. You can literally pick up a white item from the ground, throw few affix shards on it since those drop like candy and you're incentivised to use runes of shattering on your old gear as well as literally any blue or yellow that drop to get more of the shards. (the armor vendor sells those for 2000g a pop and they also start dropping pretty frequently the further into the game you go.) That crafting system means that you should never be behind when it comes to gear and at the endgame you have a lot of freedom and ease of access to very good rares (unlike in games like PoE where that can be an insane pain in the arse.)
The endgame in LE just does not have as much *stuff* in it as PoE does, but PoE also has over a decade of dev time to shove those in them. To some this is a plus, some find it lacking. I'm kinda in the middle. I tend to play Last Epoch and Grim Dawn between PoE seasons since neither of them have as exhaustive endgames, but since they're not as exhaustive it is easier to get to the point where I want to get and when I get there, the new PoE season usually is just around the corner!
I hope to see you back in LE when the 1.0 releases, I really enjoyed this video! (Same with your PoE stuff! Hopefully you'll be back to the game in the future!)

I think last epoch's early game is better as well, the skill specialization system is really well done. The crafting is also very fun and powerful yet balanced. A lot better than poe's insane gambling click-athon. But unfortunately the game kind of fizzles out early on in the endgame. Poe's mapping system and years worth of league mechanics is just vastly superior and more fun than last epoch's system. But hopefully with time both poe's early game and last epochs lategame will get better!

The microtransactions I want to see in an arpg like that would be sth like a gold sink where I can buy very "expensive" shiny things from currency that drops in the game once I don't need it for anything relevant to gameplay any more.
So the appearance is more indicator of playtime if you actually care about stuff like that.

    • @ZSpecZA
      @ZSpecZA 7 месяцев назад

This game does have a gold sink at the end game in the form of a dungeon called the Lightless Arbor. You can blow through 2mil+ gold there and get some crazy rewards, but it's just uniques, set items, exalted items, runes and glyphs for crafting etc. There are some rare drops to be had, but it's not comparable to cosmetics you can buy in the MTX shop if its only the appearance you're after. Just wanted to point out that there is a gold sink in the game because that is important to some players. Passive re-rolls and stash tabs also cost in-game gold, so there's that too.

Since it seems like you keep trying to learn how to play ARPGs, one of crucial ideas for them is understanding which item is better. There is a thing called "tooltip DPS" which basically says how much a skill is doing damage per second so you can check it before and after and see which item/talent/skill is better. It not always works and there are some caveats but its pretty straight forward.
The shitty weapons you were using just because they are "yellow" were quite bad, any blue item with damage mods would out-damage them. The gameplay for Last epoch would want you to filter out and show items with good damage rolls, which you then use or break with rune of shatering so you can put them on on any weapon you want.
