I mean, you can not like it either way, but I do think there is a huge difference between playing handicapped and pure smurfing. I say that as a player who used to play against people who handicapped themselves in Quake games when I played more regularly. This is especially the case when you clearly dont stand a chance against them at full power: Theyre not really undermining your ability to get a hard fought win because you never stood a chance, nor are they just beating you down because the entire point of the handicap is that you can still win. I.e. They are still a stepping stone to your further improvement and often in accelerated ways, while training themselves up in what can also be unique ways.
Admittedly this is less the case in Minecraft because you arnt directly interacting, but man, I got better so fast playing in this way, learnt so much from interacting with pros. I remember being surprised when I went back in to general play against average jos and wiped the floor with them because Id been pushing myself against these top tier players, and Id have had a fraction of that experience without them handicapping themselves. Its a fundamentally different dynamic to someone just coming down to beat on you unrelentingly game after game.
Interestingly smurfing has been studied, and player opinions of it get pretty nuanced beyond the knee jerk hate an initial response can garner. Ultimately, the majority do not hold the same blanket view as Ludwig, and see a bunch of ways it can be justified. I really think more designers should take some of this stuff on board and implement systems to allow it with more official mechanics. I mean, itd be a lot of work to balance and probably not all that profitable so I suspect itll remain rarely done, but having a proper built in and varied handicap system that allows people to drop down can be awesome for a whole bunch of reasons. (I think some of the best examples so far are things like Street Fighter 6 that comes pretty close to that kind of thing, but as far as Im aware its still rare and/or not nearly as fleshed out as it could be.)
