  • The branding iron has been a fixture in the west since the first arrival of cattle. Each branding iron is as unique as the men and women who own them. More than just a symbol of ownership, an individual’s brand carries with it the tradition and history of the ranch it belongs to. We talk to a rancher in central New Mexico about his brand and what it means.

Is it necessary to have a ranch in any way to have a family brand, or can it be put on anything?

Nope not necessary. Ive seen people freeze brand their dogs/pets (freeze branding isn’t painful, just freezes the pigment out of the hair, or if held longer makes the area bald)
It can also be used on boots, hats, anything leather or wood. And the design can also be painted on things and used as a general logo.
