Trudy, the education medium in Tanzania is divided into two; in elementary schools, with the exception of private schools, Swahili is the medium of instructions and English is taught as a language subject. Even in elementary schools science subjects are taught in Kiswahili, then they swith into English in Secondary/high school and college.

Tanzania is a Union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar which were both independent countries until they united in 1964 to form The United Republic of Tanzania. Even the word Tanzania derived from TANganyika and ZANzibar(TAN+ZAN) then added suffix IA to make pronounceable i.e TAN+ZAN+IA=TANZANIA.
After the Union in 1964 they tried to find the form of gvt that would accommodate both parts retaining their history, there were three ideas first was a single gvt state, second two gvt state(the gvt of the Union and gvt of Zanzibar) and third were three gvt state(gvt of Tanganyika,gvt of Zanzibar and gvt of the Union) but the third idea was found so costful so they opted second idea. So the President of Tanzania is the head of both States Tanganyika and Zanzibar. but there is also a President in Zanzibar who is the head of state for Zanzibar.
Also there are about 17 Union matters just to mention a few are 1.army+police

3.Parliament
4.currency

Thank you for this inspiring video. For a Tanzanian the content is so touching. You have aired a sensitive issue of our union. Certainly even comments from us Tanzanians might even confuse you further about the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar to form Tanzania.
The union has both success stories and irritating challenges. It is one of the few attempts in our continent where two countries tried to merge into one and the resulting nation has withstood the test of time. When we agreed to unite, Tanganyika dissolved its government into the union while Zanzibar (which comprises the two major islands of Unguja and Pemba, plus several smaller islands in the vicinity) retained some few matters without the union. Consequently, the revolutionary government of Zanzibar didn't dissolve but gave up significant portion of its sovereignty to union. That's why you don't have "the embassy of Zanzibar " in Kenya or elsewhere. Even in international organizations such as AU or the UN, Zanzibar enters as part of Tanzania but not as a sovereign State.
Tanganyika on the other hand is a thing of the past, it no longer exists.
Such form of a union is also exemplified in a certain country in Europe, called United Kingdom (UK). There, several (not just two) States united to one State but then whereas one member (England) dissolved its government into the union, the others (such as Scotland) retained theirs.
Now as I said earlier, our union has some challenges which are still debated even this day. At the top official levels the discussion looks smooth and very diplomatic. However this might not be the case at community level. A considerable number of citizens are not comfortable with the set up of the union. At times we rub shoulders vigorously enough to draw the attention of you (our neighbors). Generally, a casual Zanzibari (a citizen of Zanzibar is called a Zanzibari) complains or demands more sovereignty to Zanzibar (as a country) while his counterpart in the mainland , feels that the Zanzibaris are excessively favored over them. That's why if you visit the islets and talk to the locals, you will hear them insisting on issue which portray sovereignty (the flag, the national anthem, the presidency etc). The mainlanders would complain that when a Zanzibari goes to the mainland, he still possesses full citizenship rights just as any other mainlander, but when the mainlander goes to the islets he is denied some citizenship rights such as land ownership or employment opportunities.
Unfortunately at times (though rare) tensions may rise and serious hatred can be evident.
I have tried to be as neutral as I can, not to bias on my part of the union. I don't know how good at that I have been. May be to let me know this, you (the reader) try to guess which part of the union I do come from, am I a Zanzibari or a Mainlander?

SADC countries have loads of SWAHILI WORDS in their TRADITIONAL LANGUAGES! So, they were meant to be speaking SWAHILI LANGUAGE as their main language instead of English if they were not colonised and forced to speak English!
