Doesn't the train have a signal/comm system? If he hadn't slowed and the signal for the trains was the white horizontal bar, shouldn't an alarm have signaled in the operator cab? Or does Valley Metro not have that on it's LRT system
I worked as a train operator a few years back for Metro light rail. The signals are nothing but a white bar either vertical or horizontal. It's a nightmare system that is extremely unsafe. You are often hunting and pecking, trying to see the stupid signals sometimes not even clear to you. I'm surprised there are not more accidents. This was Phoenix half ass attempt at building mass transit and cutting corners while doing it.
@@TheRailwayDrone yah, the train operator should have seen a WHITE horizonal bar on the train signal. If you look at the traffic signals at intersections that have Light Rail, at the center between the tracks is a signal that displays a vertical or horizontal bar. Horizontal means the train is to stop
@@steelswarfs the train pretty much always has right of way over street vehicles especially since its exponentially easier for the street traffic to stop as opposed to the train. The crossing needs more safety stuff but that driver needed to pay better attention.
Not the case here. The Metro was supposed to stop. They have a separate set of signals tied to the traffic lights but they do NOT always have priority. Effectively they run just like buses on this segment at a top speed of 35 MPH. FYI the Metro can stop almost as quickly as a bus.@@darkjdub13

The traffic light clearly shows green for the vehicles on the street. Looks like the tram operator is in trouble.
Prayers for all those affected. May God aid in their speedy recoveries. 🙏
Looks like the next car was going through the intersection too. Wonder if the light malfunctioned.

I was going to college when they finished building this transit system down by ASU. It was interestnig then and that was back in 2008.
Today they just opened the station at Metrocenter, nearly 4 years after the mall permanently closed. Phoenix is special.

You just described most drivers.
This is TRAM. "Light rail" is wrong, because it is general term and can mean other transport systems.
Should be bells and crossing arms. Light rail is not designed properly to run through pre existing intersections.
Drivers of motor vehicles should look where they’re going and not cross any tracks or other roads before verifying they’re clear.
