  • What an honor to talk to rock royalty. Ian Anderson is on Talkin’ Rock to discuss the latest album and more around his life and Jethro Tull.
The latest album is called RökFlöte and is out now. That bring said, Ian talked about an idea he got in early 2023 for the next album already. “My resolve is to work during this year to get that ready for rehearsal and recording in January and February of next year.”
He talked about touring and making up dates after the pandemic. “I tried not to think about it too much.” as far as if he missed playing live and touring during the lockdowns.
We got into some spiritual talk. He told me about studying religions and attending different masses. “I rather like the unknowable.” he said about what lies beyond here.
I asked him about the term “prog rock”. He said he preferred the term Progressive Rock. He dove into that much more.
What about that scene in Anchorman, where Will Ferrell was playing the flute in the jazz club? He brought up that he thought Fox TV anchorman Tony Snow had more to do with that scene than he did.
Lastly, I asked him where his Metal Grammy is….that’s a fun story.
    Enjoy the conversation.

Excellent discussion. Thank you for exploring Ian’s beliefs on the spiritual and Church’s. Probably the most candid discussion of religion by a rock star I’ve heard.

Would love to have your ear if but for a moment Mr Anderson. The Spirit searches all things yeah the deep things of God! 1st Corinthians ch 2. Faith is one of the most misunderstood truths even by those who are called Christians you most certainly have a measure of faith Ian though it seems what you have is harnessed by what gets everyone from time to time " intellect. Anyway I'll be praying you find that portal, gate or door you spoke of and upon finding it go through!!!

better musicians always want to challenge themselves and they will tend to push themselves...
I grew up a blizzard of ozz fan, who had elite musicians who wanted to challenge themselves

What I want to know is what did Ian do bright and early this last January 1st? Did he start yet another album, or is Roc-Flute and whatever he did last year going to be it? These last two albums have been so great I was looking forward to even more from Ian.

Enjoyed listening to Anderson, but the interviewer couldn't be more vapid. At least he'd have to make a real effort.

Well, Ian doesn't really appear to be into it or engaged in talking. He does that in every interview and always impatient to end the talk.

As time goes by I am so far less critical of Ian in anything because I think of how much poorer I and the world would have been without his amazing musical talent. The energy and drive and intelligence, as well as the understanding of humanism, morality and history stands out in all popular music. He gets enough criticism - and vapid useless criticism for things he is rumored to have done or which are beyond his control. He is doing great enough on his own and whatever drives him or makes him keep going is fine by me. No other musician or performer do I hold in such high regard, whatever he does, his life speaks for itself.

@justgivemethetruth yes but because he is so influential he needs to be spot on with his views. I think his view on Islam is very short sighted but that is just my pennies worth and I have not got the influence he does. Its like Bob Dylan saying he does not judge anyone these days for their religious or political views. To take that stance as a nobody like me is fine but people who have a vast following need to be very careful about what they say they believe because despite being artists they have a politicak impact art has always been a political weapon .

I appreciate your opinion. Ian was not above singing about Vlad the Bad in RocFlote, and I'm sure if you get between Putin and his goals for Russia he can be very bad, but I think the simplistic view on Ukraine, and his echoing of the same propaganda lines about Putin wanting Ukraine, or wanting Europe, or wanting to reform the USSR are kind of sour.
Putin is no fool. In fact I think he might well be the smartest leader in Europe, mostly because he has to be, but that does not rule out his being vicious and cruel, but again I don't think Putin is stupid enough not to understand the reality that ...
EU has 4 times the population of Russia, and add in the rest of the free Western world and the numbers get worse for him.
EU has 10 times the economic power as Russia, and again add in Australia, the US, Canada, etc and there is just no way Russia could take over the world.
I could be wrong, but I have studied this a bit in the years since Ukraine and realized that the 2014 US maneuvered coup in Ukraine put Putin on notice that the US/UK/EU was trying to attack Russia - that is after Russia's capitulation there is no end to the Cold war, and the US was heating it up. I think Putin's goal was to hang on to Crimea, and with every reasonable right since the people there were Russian and it was only giving to Ukraine by Kruschev in the 1950s, as so much more of Ukraine was granted by Russia.
Putin's goal was to save Crimea, and to create enough of a Ukrainian buffer to make sure he did not have to fight for it again in the future. In his own eyes that was a valid action.
The US also has the goal to maintain the Pax Americana, and to make sure that Russia and China do not surmount the West. Much as I think the US leadership in the world has been a good thing in the perspective of history, Americans and the Westerners deserve to be told if we are to go on a giant conquering binge to take down Russia and China, and what has happened has been a big mess, and now we have Gaza/Israel added to that.
A true diplomatic solution in Ukraine will never be found as long as the long-term Western goal is to destroy Russia. Meanwhile the real imporant goal in the face of Jihadi Islamists is to destroy Islam's drive to take over the world - and rub their faces in it in total humilation. Sam Harris discusses this in an interview "Sam Harris on Israel, Radical Islam, Trump ... from the Comedy Cellar USA channel, oddly enough. Great interview.
Anyway, much as I love Ian I question his real understand of geopolitical realities, especially since the massive violent protests in England by Pro-Hamas groups and the most igorant people in the UK. Also surprised to find out how antisemitic Ireland is.

To be fair, Islam has pulled the world's eyes over its wool for centuries, masquerading as a religion, when it is a brutal totalitarian military system programming and using human beings as weapons, and violence as a means of persuasion - and the ironic horror of it is that it is, or it can be, as bad on its own people. I wish Ian would make a statement and stand up for Britain as we are now seeing some British demonstrations against what has been going on with these violent pro-Palestinian riots. All his amazing work to preserve the cathedrals of Britain will go by the wayside is Britain does not stand up for its culture and history and push back these waves of Islamism.
