Yes, if you go back to the list of Mapcomps, you can click on the letter A which will disable labels. At least that's how it worked last time I used it. Check the Help section of the plugin. It's pretty great.

I think you can find different options when you search for France's geodata. Try downloading the natural earth country feature. Use the plus button to download those.
