  • With Monday the 3rd of October 2022 being a public holiday in New South Wales, we weren't expecting much in the way of rail activity and initially it looked like those expectations would hold true. We couldn't have been more wrong.
Having journeyed back east to Tallong to catch the aggregates traffic from the Peppertree and Marulan South Quarries so we'd have something to point the cameras at we were soon treated to what was a procession of freight moves with eight freights seen over the course of a few hours spent at the station including 8127 and 8109 on 2292 from Peppertree to Maldon Cement works, TT106-TT107 on 1297 Cooks River to Peppertree, 9337 empty Nowra to Temora grain with 8211, 8253, 8165 and 8250, CF4412 and CF4404 on 1311 Harefield containers, 8180 and 8136 on 2222 from Marulan South to Berrima, 8209 and 8150 on 2120 empty garbage train, 8234, 8238 and 8162 on 3924 Cunningar to Inner Harbour grain and finally NR53 and LDP004 on 2NY3 steel.
We then followed 2NY3 for a shot of it in the Cullerins before returning to Goulburn for the second empty garbage train with 8139 and 8179 on 2122. The action continued through the evening with QL's 004, 012 and 006 on 3962 from Temora to Inner Harbour, CF4402, QBX004 and QBX006 on 3964 steel from Albury to Port Kembla, RL302, 4908 and RL306 on 2343 Maldon to Temora grain, CM3313, 1106 and 1107 on 3164 'box grain' from West Wyalong to Minto before finishing the day off with SCT's 001 and 007 on 1BM9.
    Trains seen in order are:
    2292- 8127 and 8109
    1297- TT106-TT107
    9337- 8211, 8253, 8165 and 8253

Less passenger traffic on a public holiday equals more opportunities for freight movement perhaps?

generally the same amount of passenger traffic as a week day. 6 canberra, 4 melbourne, goulburn and moss vale intercity. Freight is frequent even during the week and this is a normal amount of traffic. It is amazing how much freight you can move when you have dual track instead of only 1 track.

From what I can tell this was the normal amount of freight traffic that could be expected on a regular day, the pass traffic south of Moss Vale isn't very intensive with only the Canberra Explorer and Melbourne XPT most days, with a Junee/Griffith Explorer a couple of times a week.

With the inner harbour line back open, you'll tend to see a lot of wheat picking back up again.
The freight is fairly consistent - although, pending on the day, you'll see a party at Moss Vale from 3am to 9am, with freight services fighting for a path through the pass services.

There's been bells fitted to locos out here since the NR's were introduced, mainly as a safety thing when shunting but in this case the crew was just being friendly.
