- For this week's bad movie review, we're talking about Rawhead Rex (1986). A bad, fantasy horror Irish movie, based off a story by famous horror author Clive Barker. But the movie itself, with its ridiculous monster effects and lackluster writing, is no good...
In a small Irish town, a man accidentally awakens a monstrous pagan deity named Rawhead Rex. It isn't long before the creature goes on a rampage...
Rawhead kinda looks like a goofy evil looking Sloth from Goonies.
🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Now I know why Clive directed "Hellraiser (1987)" one year after this film.
Yes, he wanted more creative control over his stories and the way they were made into movies. Because Rawhead is just real crap. 😭
There's good reason why this motivated Barker to direct his own adaptations.
Yeah, he had creative control on them.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Agreed. Hellraiser and Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (based on "The Hellbound Heart") and Nightbreed (based on "Cabal") utterly mop the floor with this wacky shit.
I wouldn't be able to say. Apart from this one, Hellraiser and the Candyman, I haven't seen any other film based off a Clive Barker work.
As bad as this movie was I kinda like this better than those Hell raiser S&M torture porn movies !! RawHead's monster costume was silly and the story terrible!but the gore and violent is what kept me watching!!! Great review like your channel that why I subscribe Thanks
Glad you enjoyed the review ! 😁
I really agree with you. It's a forgetable movie. I watched it and I can't remember a thing. Thanks for your review. Greets from Dominican Republic.
you are wrong this is trash review
Oh fair enough
Well I think that says it all. When you watch a movie and can't remember anything from it, now THAT'S an awful movie. 🤣🤣🤣
When I first saw this movie, I thought that the creature was a mutated horse. Also, could the guy playing the priest, chew the scenery even more???
No I'm not sure he could lol, he really over acted the heck out of his role. 😭😭😭
I remember watching this movie when I was a kid, I thought it was a comedy 😂😂😂
I think a lot of people thought that. But we were all fooled. 😭😭
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Manos the Hands of Fate is scarier 🤣
@@awfulmoviereviews6792rather watch escape from new York than this movie ❤
Oh no please, for the sake of keeping my sanity intact, do not mention that movie!!! It's so bad it's scary, I'll hand that out to you hahha.
Oh yeah definitely. That's a masterpiece of the action genre.
Hot dog!! It's Friday!!
Yes, Clive Barker was an excellent horror writer. There is no question about it, but man oh man, when some of these people got their mitts on a script that even he wrote, there's no way it wouldn't be run through the cinematic shredder.
On the bright side, with Halloween coming up, maybe some enterprising kids could make up the monster.
Nicely done. Another Friday in the can.
Well one thing's for sure, Rawhead would be a nice Halloween costume for the kids. But for an actual motion picture you're supposed to take seriously... humm... NOT AT ALL hahaha.
That's actually why Barker took on more responsibilities with Hellraiser the next year, he wanted more creative control over his story.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 And it paid off. Pinhead and crew were freaking terrifying! It helped they had a tight script and actors who pulled it off!
@oldgoat142 Definitely man. 💯
Hey Bud, I`ve noticed the quality of your videos are progressing nicely. You have more insert jokes, Your research about the films are well founded and you seem to be more relaxed and you seem to be "in the zone" because of the practice. All in all, Never stop improving, I see great things ahead for you. Cheers.
Much appreciated man! Thanks for the encouragement, that's nice of you! To infinity and beyond with this channel!
One of the best Irish horror movies ever and a great story and good special effects
Well all the better if you enjoyed it. 😁
Pity the poor guy playing Rawhead. He had to train for months to be fit enough to wear the costume. I hope he was well paid.
If you have a totally crap monster mask then it's probably not the best idea to keep zooming in on it so the audience can see how bad it is.
The scenes of Rawhead bursting from his grave are quite impressive but but subsequently he just looks ridiculous.
He's called Rex because he was once King of the whole region.
Setting the movie in Ireland was a good idea. Getting the director to read the short story would have been an even better one.
This is one movie that really deserves a remake.
Yeah, why not a remake ? Bad movies should be remade to make better movies before good movies should be remade. And I agree with you on the scenes of Rex bursting out of the stone grave.
It might have been better with a cooler monster.
Maybe some. The screenplay needed to be better though. 🤷
Oh, this takes me back. I saw this movie on VHS back when I was a kid and you're right, it is pretty terrible. One scene that impressed me though, and has stayed with me all these years, is a scene in which a couple are attacked by Rawhead and, clasping each others hands, manage to run away. The camera tracks after them, close in on the woman, and, suddenly, she stops and turns, thinking she and her partner have escaped and he's still with her, only to find the man is gone and she is still clutching his disembodied hand. Crap movie, but pretty cool scene I always thought.
I agree. For a low budget goofy movie, the camera work there was well done.
Back in the day, I read all of Barkers Books of Blood series, of which Rawhead Rex was one of the stories.
It was a good story and all, but I do remember it as a pretty standard scary monster story.
I never saw the film, mostly because I wasn't excited enough about the original short story, to make the effort.
I see what you mean. It was just mid source material to begin with.
I miss my Gramma's Irish stew. 😊
It looks quite good, not going to lie!
Pretty bad but got some nice bloody kills!!! The creature looks comical 😂😂
Yeah you're right, it's a rather gory movie. But that's not enough for me hahahah !
I had seen the comic version of Rawhead Rex and all five chapters were narrated by The Horror Show.
Noice
Wonderful review of a real stinker. I will never get those minute back in my life. I will drink instead.
But you can always make it up for if with a good movie ! Or another activity !
I've always really liked this film, in spite of the cheap looking monster suit. It's just so......visceral and deeply disturbing on a number of levels. I think, overall, it works quite well as a monster on the loose flick.
Nice take on it !
Rex means king. Look for the illustrated short story version, if that had been the monster in the movie, this would have been a horror classic.
I'll do just that ! Imma check it out.
By gosh, it DOES look like "The Giant Claw!" After this, you might want to watch an episode of "Father Jack" just to clear the air.
I think I may just do that!
IMO RR is an incarnation of Irish mythological hero Cuchulainn.
Never heard of the mythical creature in question. It could have served as inspiration yes. I'm going to check it up!
I watched this movie a while ago. The monster is more like a cartoon than anything else.
Yes you're totally right.
No joke, there is literally a Showa Gamera film that uses the exact same initial premise as 'Rawhead' - old statue should never be moved, seal broken, hero violated in a sexual way (the enemy laid his eggs in the turtle) - and of course, annoying kids. Does Clive Barker have enough cred in the industry to get this remade properly?
No, I'm not sure he does.
That sounds like an absolute scam. 😭😭
Oh boy 😆😆😆 they really messed this movie up but I guess they really couldn't have a giant diq monster slaughtering people.
Just watch The Deadly Spawn if you want to see a giant wiener monster.
Yeah that would've been hella weird lol. Guess it's for the better we got this. 🤷
Oh fair enough 😭😭
@@huntercoleman460 yep I've seen that and I don't want to see a giant wiener monster 😆 I'm good on that 😆
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 yeah it definitely was
Even the best of writers bombs once in a while.
Yes they do. Every great artist takes an L from time to time.
The only memorable thing about this movie was so many F Bombs used lol other than that "What an Awful Movie"
We can agree that this is a pretty awful movie. 🤣
with a good budget this could be a good remake
And especially a better script !
I never read the book. I read a comic adaptation that I think was supposed to be as precisely based as those can get. It was pretty good. Much better than the movie, which was a pretty generic '80s slasher flick (and set in Ireland for some reason, even though AFAIK the book and comic weren't).
So it wasn't even set in Ireland ?? 😅
Well that's just weird.
Agreed about the awfulness of this lame duck. I do however like the concept of some super aggressive Bigfoot sized critter tearing up the countryside. I put grim and pumpkin head in this category, tho pumpkin head was a little better.
I'll agree to say the concept is interesting, even though it's by the numbers and we've seen it many many times before. But there's nothing quite like a popcorn horror monster movie haha.
As for Pumpkinhead, I remember it being MUCH BETTER than Rawhead. There's no comparison, in my opinion, lmao.
Bad,tedious, and very, very, very forgettable. PERFECT description 😅😂😂😂
Definitely lol.
The movie begs to be remade - and I hate remakes. Get Nicataro, Savini or even Rick Baker to do the monster. Make the story closer to the Clive Barker writing - and you may just have a winner,
Oh yeah, you just cited the holy Trinity of horror special effects wizards. 💯💯👍
Rubberhead Ron!
😆😆😆
Rex probably refers to the Latin "king"
Possibly. 🤔
not a bad movie
I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just didn't at all...
They have guns in Ireland? Just wondering...
Looooool, that's a good question. They must have something in order to defend themselves though. Otherwise, that would be really complicated.
Rawhead!!!
RAWHEEEEEAAAAAD!!!!!!
The guy really overacted the heck out of his role.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 I have a soft spot for this film (having loved the Books of Blood), but it is terrible!
My girlfriend made me watch the movie sssss. That was a bad movie, turning people into snakes 😂
Several people in the comments section have mentioned this movie before. But I've never seen it. 🤔😁
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 My gf said it was scary, it was the worst movie I've ever seen
This movie looks silly 😜!
Oh yeah, it's Silly with a capital S.
🤣
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Yup.😂
@@reneedennis2011 So now you know what you must do, right ? Stay away from it at all costs !! 🤣
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Exactly!
How about modern bad movies ??? Winnie the Pooh blood and honey .
I think I would have copyright issues with them.
Rawhead so goofy
You said it... Like I said, silly with a capital S.
As far as the unnecessary but mandatory kissing scenes are concerned, every horror movie ever made had to have at least at least one. In this case since the Emerald Isle doesn't cotton to gratuitous bloody violent scenes in the movies like in the US in the 80's, they had to fill the time with something, I suppose. Me thinks a drunken patron pub brawl in place of just one love scene would have added a little some badly needed action. That said, at least the beaming red eyed monster didn't conc the fair haired lassie on the head with a shillelagh and carry...err, I mean drag her off to the bog.
Yeah, that's a good point. A brawl inside an Irish pub would've not only added some action but also just fit it better with the whole atmosphere haha.
But to be fair, this picture does have quite a bit of gore. Maybe not as much as some of the infamous video nasties, but still, it's got a good dose of blood. I can't lie.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Mostly kidding about the pub brawl. Saw the "Quiet Man" on TCM and was just thinking.
But now that you mention it, it would be a good idea hahahaha!
Maybe you stop making cult horror reviews . And began make just cult movie review . Review not only horror and also : sci fi , fantasy , and some action and adventure . Because on bad movie reviews you review garbage from all genres .
Not right now. I'm content with just making cult horror reviews, because that's my favorite genre.
@@awfulmoviereviews6792 Yes. There is enough awful horror reviews out there to last almost a lifetime🤣😂🤣. Plus its my favorite genre also. 😉
Oh yeah, you've definitely got that right. 😭🤣
