  • EP 140: The life and times of genius problem solver, Claude Shannon w/ Jimmy Soni
My guest on this episode is Jimmy Soni-who, with his co-author Rob Goodman, recently wrote the biography of Claude Shannon, titled; A Mind at Play.
Shannon was born in 1916 and became one of the foremost intellects of the twentieth century, before passing away in 2001. He was a mathematician, a scientist, an inventor and also, a stock market investor…
Although he’s widely unknown by the general public, Shannon is responsible for Information Theory-a revolutionary method of measuring information which stands behind much of the technology we use all day everyday.
Shannon’s other achievements, discoveries and inventions range from artificial intelligence to cryptography and fire breathing trumpets to chess playing machines and the world’s first wearable computer, and that’s not all!

I must be fair and say I had never heard of Claude Shannon before, bur after this interview I wish to know more about him. It is interesting a man like this, would go so against the modern day grain in terms of anti- celebrity status etc. I couldn't imagine anyone working on something so important as information theory and then just moving on, a real inspiration, since this is how I feel about my interests. Definitely a great interview worth an extensive summary on in my notes, thank you Aaron!

Just finished the interview and wow, what an incredible guy. Jimmy has done him a great service to his legacy. This was a great story even though I feel somewhat less accomplished than I used to before learning about him. Haha.

His mother a teacher...His father kind of Jack of all trades lawyer, judge, undertaker, etc. Looks to me like a very solid foundation for a young man to build on. Children are sponges that absorb everything around them; good or bad. I think it´s wrong to be dismissive of such an influence.

Lots of praise, zero about doings. Boring junk about one interesting person.
