I totally agree with you: a bonsai is never finished, it is always in training. The fascinating thing for me, however, is how the individual tree develops over the years of design. That's what makes a pride.
Excellent bonsai video. I'm inspired to air layer my 3 yr old lemon tree from seed into a horizontal cascading lemon bonsai. Also, you're pleasant and sound a lot like Dana Carvey. I used to work with Dana's brother and sound just like both of them.
Really lovely lemon semi cascade! I could almost smell the citrus aroma while you were pruning it! My citrus lime has been indoors for a few weeks now and has started to flower already in January 😯
Love this cascading lemon tree. The Japanese bonsai rationale usually is to develop the perfect tree, usually fixing all the "mistakes" or abandoning a "unsuitable" tree. The Chinese, usually enhances the "defect" and "uniqueness" of the individual tree. I am more found of the last. I like to have Nature as a partner in developing my bonsai. That is why I am so found of you and your channel.
Nigel, can lemon trees be propagated by root cuttings? I think that is what u said about this great little cascading bonsai. That it was started from a root……..? Sorry if I misunderstood it…… I very much value ALL (well, most all of) your videos!! I lean heavily on your past experiences and your thought processes, they are a gold mine of information! In case you aren’t aware, you are quickly becoming a living legend in the bonsai community! You have shared SO MUCH of your bonsai journey and it is a vast well of information, knowledge and experience! Thank you for all the great informative videos, Nigel!! I’m humbled that you have responded to nearly every one of my past comments on your past videos……. I imagine that you get inundated with comments/messages from your vast video library you have created. THANK YOU, Nigel!! Hope you have an amazing spring!! Take care
I like how the tree is comming along. The only thing bugging me is that long horizontal branch which I would like to see sloping dow more. Since you don't use wiring maybe you could consider weighting down that branch, if you want to have it sloping more of course.
@@TheBonsaiZone Yes, pruning it will solve that in a snap :). What I am also interested in is how can one force a branch to cascade without wiring? By directional pruning you can always select a downward facing bud but the new growth will immediately start to grow upwards. I would love to read more on this if you know of any good source of information. Thanks!
You should break the corner of the pot out just a little and bring the tree just below the edge of the pot. I really like the look of a broken free cascade tree.
Goodness gracious! Those roots are doing amazingly well! I really like the idea of this tree. It is already looking quite nice, so I can't wait to see it in a few more years. Great potential!
Amazing all that root came from that tiny pot! Love to watch your process. I did my first carving on 2 willows recently...kinda scary. Tree looks great!
Beautiful tree! I'm very camera shy but you inspire me to try making videos like this too, it seems extremely beneficial to document the plant journeys with video.
Hi Nigel tip the pot backwards, say 45deg and make the cascade part of the planting higher than the current apex the tree will think it has a new apex and treat it as such ie thicken up faster (apically dominant), leave it like that for a while, love your channel
Great idea Percy! I've done this in the past to get the branches to grow in a more weeping fashion, but it would also increase the vigor of the cascading branch too!
neat lemon tree nigel. i started one from seed last winter. think mine is a different type my leafs are way bigger. i might leaf prune in spring to reduce ther size. keep the great videos coming i chop through them like a "here i go" cut haha
What a beautiful little subject to work with. Citrus can be worked with to create amazing Bonsai trees ,they have great structure , nice leaf size, fragrance, flowers, and even fruit . What a great video Nigel thanks for this! Have you ever tried growing a plant called Dorstenia as bonsai ..wink wink next subject to try :-)
Nigel, thanks for all the entertaining videos. I have been watching many over the last couple of weeks since I found your channel. I have some questions concerning lemon trees. I have 4 which I have grown from seed and was hoping to find someone to give me some direction. Not sure if that would be you, but perhaps (if you find a moment) you might let me know if you were willing. Happy to reach out to KW Bonsai in general, but I thought I would start here. Thanks for the hours of instructional viewing so far!
Found your how to cultivate seedlings so many of my questions were answered. My last one is should I try to create a clump style with a set of lemon seedlings. 2 years old. Thanks.
Nigel, We are getting used to this daily video release!! Thank you for all of the bonsai videos. Just one request, could you put something behind the tree you are working on to make it easier to see your work? Thanks again!
It depend on the growth of the top of the tree, if the tree is allowed to grow wild over the summer, it will develop more of a root system and will need to be re potted more often, if it is being refined, it can be re potted less. Generally speaking, every 2 to 4 years will usually do.
I think he's said he usually uses a mix of turface as be perlite, occasionally with a small amount of organic matter. He's talked about it in a few videos and has one specifically on bonsai soil. Though since the bonsai soil video I think he's gone to using little to no organic matter.
Nice to see you back again thank you Nigel

Very well said!
Hello my friend number 61
They are all Bonsai in training. True words! Well said, Nigel!
Hey Nigel, I think that's a beautiful little tree. I'd certainly adopt it!
Thanks Mandie, it's doing well so far, still green after the re pot!

The flowers smell so nice, one of the best smells there is!
Very nice root system and the tree has really good potential. Another great video Nigel 👍
That's a cool turn table Nigel!
Lemon tree bonsai!! Such a lovely tree, thanks for sharing.

Thanks Alvaro, yes nature luckily works to make a tree form also!
Looks amazing Nigel nice to see you again..

I am not sure, I have had a shoot come off of one of my exposed roots, so I would think so?
That's a dam beautiful lemon tree Nigel ! Great job 👌
Thanks, it's a step ahead!

I'm hoping to prune it in future and break up that horizontal line, but I have to wait until the branch gets stronger!
@@TheBonsaiZone Yes, pruning it will solve that in a snap :).

Nature is spectacular every day. Cheers
Yes, It's really enjoyable watching the trees develop over the years!
Wonderful tree! Good job Nigel!
Nice video good job Nigel Thank you greetings Josef
Beautiful tree! I'm very camera shy but you inspire me to try making videos like this too, it seems extremely beneficial to document the plant journeys with video.
It's very helpful to look back at the older videos to guide you into the future!

The roots are great! I'd definitely like to grow some citrus bonsai.
Not a bad looking tree. Trunk is unique.

Dorstenia foetida looks awesome, when I get my greenhouse built this year, I'll be getting more succulent trees and more of the non typical bonsai!
I know what I'm growing next ! Cool tree
Wow, lemon bonsai👌👌👌
Some day I hope them all to be in flower!

Thanks Michael, I'll try, but I don't have much room anymore, the room is getting very full!
Got to admit I like the tree
could you recommend any stores in the Toronto area that sell pots and other bonsai supplies?
Looks nice!
Thanks Betula, it's off to a good start!
Any reason you didn’t seal the big wound on trunk from pruning away the scar??
I usually let the wounds air dry and then just heal over. Some people say this is better, other's don't!
Swiss watchmaker precision pruning and potting!
Love.
how often do you repot citrus?

Thanks Niah!!

Cheers Clement!
What kind of soil are you using, is it gravels with sand?

I also have a lemon tree
But I am really confused what style I should choose
