    The 1N4007 diodes are in series and one of them is useless.100nF capacitor charging 470uF takes a few seconds without any load,but having connected a load it will not work because it will never fully charged to 5v.Equal or less than 1uF capacitor for fast 5v rising time.

    This circuit just works for a few mA, Never for high currents.
    This is good for low consumption devices like LEDs.
    Biggest current flows needs transformer.

    Why 2 diodes? It seems like one of the two is redundant. Removing one diode should'nt cause any change in the working right?

    if you're looking for zapping somebody, that's the right way. never connect live 220v without a transformer, you readers just take it for educational purpose, do not attempt to use 5v out from that circuit

    I have a doubt. To glow led of 2v and 20 milliamps We need to apply resistance of (220-2) /(.020). I.e., 11 k ohms across 220 v supply.
    So if we need 5v and 2 amps, should we be using 215/2. i.e., 107.5 ohms resistor?

      2 amps you will not get, capacitive dropper circuit gives very low ampere

    What is the role of 100nF capacitor
    It is a voltage divider ckt, will not IN 4001 gets damaged on reversal of polarity, as PIV of these diodes is very less.

      you need to use bridge connection using diode and capacitor,
      for exact 5 volt, you can use 7805 voltage regulating IC.

      It is safe provided you secure it in a plastic/MDF box and connect the phase to the open end of the ceramic....if you connect neutral , electric shock at the output is for sure ....to avoid mistake,use a 3 pin plug so that the live wire always remain connected to the proper place

    2:03 - 2:10 what you mean by AC negative and positive? AC doesn't have polarity. Do you mean live and neutral?

    Actually this circuit has one problem. It will heat the zener diode. And blast the capacitor bcz total output of 1 micro farad capacitor is around 150 volt and you are converting 150 volt to 5 volt directly. So it will generate lot heat.

      P=UxU/R so , 220x220/470000 in watts normally 0.1w but be aware of the max voltage of the resistor , so put a 1w.

    This is not pure 5v DC. This is modified sine wave and curve does not flat like pure DC. If you touch this 5v it will give you shock
