English subtitles are very bad, ex: @ 0:25 woman voice:"On ne dirait pas que c'est un film d'amour!" - "Pourtant c'est vrai" ----> "Some call it a love story"-"they may be right""It doesn't look like it's a romance movie!"-"And yet it is true"
Sorry - but subtitling is challenging - getting the length right and the meaning without being too literal - Amy suggestions welcome.

It would sound more natural in English and would be more accurate to say "You wouldn't say it's a love story" and then "But it is."
Jane Fonda had to learn French for this film?
Dunno. Assume she had learnt at school a bit.
She fluent in french. She attended French school in USA.
