- This footage is from our documentary BoardRoom Legends of Surfboard Shaping. We went to film some footage of Bruce For Our Film, what we got was a lesson in how to shape a surfboard. While our film covers the evolution of the craft from the 1930s to the early 70s, we captured some great content like this that we wanted to share.

I truly appreciate that Mr.Jones has forgone wearing a mask so that we can hear him clearly. We are so lucky to be able to see an artist at work. Lots of his info may go over my head but I’ll watch again and again . Thank you Mr Jones.
Use to stop by the Bruce John's shop in surfside. Bruce was almost always there and so easy to talk to. Didn't have to be about boards or surfing, he was just so friendly and easy to have a conversation with. I was so sad when I read that he passed. I have 2 of his boards both 9'6" one vintage and one within 20 years. Very easy to catch a wave leaving me with some energy to pop up.
BJ, one of my fave shapers....... we both got heavily into windsurfing and his went great/ Consummate craftsman w/no BS approach. I notice he's using a Clark Hitachi in the beginning then a Skil 100 on. I've got two of each and use them interchangeably too on any given day. Shaping is a discipline. We are basically sculpting performance art for people to express themselves on momentary watery canvases while also getting away from the fray and mundane details of every day life. Surfboards are good therapy tools......
I want to learn more about shapers, but I just know about Bruce Johns, Can you recommend me some more??
Thank you!
We interviewed a ton of shapers. Check out our site for the interviews.
This is awesome, really like the tempo and pauses for explanation!
R.I.P.
What a wealth of knowledge!
And he had a great website too with lots of love /information sharing.
Oh snaps Bruce Jones. Miss your shop at surfside. Where are you now?
Thank you for sharing! Great stuff. If you are a shaper there is a lot of valuable info. RIP Bruce
Thanks for the note.
He breaks so many "rules" of shaping. A true Mastro of his craft.
I shaping boards on the North Shore back in the early seventies. Wish I knew some of Bruce's techniques then. Especially wish that tool for rail symmetry was available then.
Sure didn't take long to put in the vee. Working the depth knob like a boss!
I swear I'm not stoned but it just hit me that the flow of the depth and roll of a planer over a board being shapes is like finding the line on a wave. Does this mean I'm slow?
Hola muy buena
Never heard of a planer with grit. Where did you find that?
What's the name of the finer planer? Where can I buy that planner, please?
No plugs, no mask. Legend
He said it was because of filming so he could here and talk.
You shaped boards for my friend Everett Asian guy who surfed Sunset Blvd LA in 77 78 79 .He wore red booties and ripped your sticks .
Is it just me or is there something a little strange with the outline and/or thickness in the nose area?
awesome video. Camera man tho lol
If you make a full template from two halves of a half template they will be the same on both sides, If you make it correctly. remember kids. make it right in the first place.
Which planer is being used 13:02?
