    Just been up my loft and did exactly the same job for exactly the same reason. Found the spring had failed in the first one ( "butterfly" type) and replaced with the off centre pivot type. Fingers crossed.
    Only thing I'd add is that if you are fitting it horizontally ( as most people do) you need to be sure to fit it so it swings closed when the fan is not running. It 100% relies on gravity.

    Just fitted a pair of these to prevent backdraft where extractors from two rooms merge into one outdoor vent. I found that gluing a small nut on to the bottom of the flap made the closing far more secure and didn't seem to affect airflow

    These flaps do not fully stop draughts if your fan is high on a building or on say the side of prevailing wind but it will help. In a previous house I had a loft fan extracting/ vent from wood ceiling in bathroom.. my solution worked. The outer most plastic grille in bathroom was detachable so I filed off the plastic clips of this and created a hinged door which was secured on non visible side by using two small Brass (non rusting) hinges and shortened pull cord attached to the grill at opposite end. The grille was held up/closed with a magnet as used for cupboards and pull down to open. The hinged down grill could then be sealed up with a circular piece of black rubber sealed in place with sealant. Ok may not be the prettiest thing but all you noticed was the shorter but reachable pull down cord attached to the grille. This completely stopped draughts and ensured bathroom never got cold.

      Update. Fans facing prevailing wind always produce cold draught esp in Winter. I am removing 2 ceiling fans completely as a result of this. Both of the rooms have windows that open so no need to have an extractor fan. The negative cost of heating cold air entering the rooms is far in excess of the benefits of removing small amount of water vapour which an open window achieves. A bathroom which does not get cold from the fan which is soffit mounted facing East does benefit from back draught shutter. What I don't understand is why shower units are not always fully sealed eg door to sealing and sealing waterproof trimmed. If showers were better sealed you would have little vapour escaping and no wish to install an unnecessay extractor fan.

    You may need a rigid pipe for these as they work best with the big flap is down. If the big side ends up at top it may stay open. I used these for a hob extraction unit, and use two in one pipe just to be safe. Boiler flues are nearby. It's some distance away by you can never be too safe.

      Can you please explain what we need to be careful about? I am very confused by what you have written. Something about the flue and using 2 of these and other stuff? Thanks

      So you are recommending the big side of the backdraft sensor be on the lower part when installed horizontally to take advantage of the extra weight of the flapper.

      If you look at the installation instructions for a gas central heating boiler, there will be instructions as to how far away the next building opening, e.g a door, window or extract vent can be so as to reduce the chances of boiler exhaust gases (which may include carbon monoxide and other nasties) going back into your building. There are also other restrictions related to the corners of buildings, gates, fences etc which can change the airflow round the gas boiler exhaust point and give varying air pressures so the boiler exhaust gases may not flow quite where you expect.

    LOL, I just fitted one of these flaps today, within 2 minutes of testing the flap came off and flew to the end grill and blocked up the airflow completely, fan sounded horrible. I took it out,

    only problem the new one you fitted, when fan is on, it doesn't open all the way, flow is restricted by about 30-40%

    • @fiveminuteman
      @fiveminuteman  2 года назад

      Depends on prevailing wind and if the extractor fan is being operated on a particularly windy day. It reduced cold air flow in the winter that would bring the ensuite bathroom down from 21c to 19c. Inline fans with the pressure generally open the flapper qll the way and maintain pressure flow.

    • @ProVConstructs
      @ProVConstructs Год назад

      I don't think it's that significant. More like 20%. It'll do it's job just fine.

    I've got two bathroom vents that flap in the wind and make an awful noise. Do these backdraft shutters just sit in the pipe duct that runs through the wall to the outside vent?
