Any advice on buying a sextant? Ebay has some very cheap but they are small, 4 and 5 inches. Does size matter? I would assume brass would hold up better than other materials.
This response us only 8 years late, but those cheap eBay sextants are ornamental and not made for celestial navigation. I bought a used real sextant (Astra IIIb clone) on eBay for $300 from an Indian ship salvager. It works perfectly.
All very good until you find yourself in rough seas or large swells in the middle of the ocean, trying to keep the bloody thing steady to the horizon. It's not easy, I am telling you.
