Principal Bump is such a refreshing character. A school authority figure in a kids show who actually cares about his students. Whenever he opposes the protagonists, it isn't just some insane grudge against a child or hatred of kids being kids. No, they're situations where, as the administrator, it's reasonable for him to prioritize the school as a whole over an individual. Plus, he's actually reasonable and open to being proven wrong. He's one of my favorite side characters ever.
Yeah, he's not like Dumbledore. That old bat is like: "Harry Potter managed to tie his shoelaces all by himself today, so, infinity points to Gryffindor"

The scenes with the principal are always hilarious. He's not a bad guy, he just loves his institution and watching the next generation bloom. Like with Willow, once he saw her talent in plant magic he immediately transferred her to the plant track.
That moment when Eda returns to a place she considered absolute poison and completes all kinds of demeaning tasks just to give Luz the opportunity to learn... PEAK CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!! 💯🔥
"Once Upon a Swap" may be the weakest episode, but it's still hilarious. I personally love how when Luz, King, and Eda swap bodies, they keep some of their facial features. It's a cool artistic decision.
Widely regarded as one of the two worst episodes of the series. And the fact that both of those episodes are still pretty damn good is a testament to the quality of the show.
I don't know why, but that episode always gives me vibes like the cherubs episode of Helluva Boss. Still a kinda funny thing but otherwise not much more
@@p3chv0gel22 very much so, it's fun, but kind of out of place and very fillery. It's a really start contrast to what the show becomes soon after, in the case of both shows really.
The idea of keeping the facial features after swapping is something I’m not a fan of. I notice in almost every animated body swap episode, the characters that swap bodies also swap voices. It feels like the writers are insulting my intelligence; like they think I can’t tell that they’ve swapped otherwise, and what they did here is just a further insult to my intelligence.
@@glittergirl956 I mean, to be fair, the ending gag would be a lot harder to write if they kept the voices tied to the bodies - Lilith would only be able to bark, etc.
Once Upon a swap is almost unanimously considered to be the WORST episode of the entire show, and it's not even bad, but soon the show will get much better, i would say the show starts to get really good on episode 15. It's worth mentioning that Dana Terrace and the rest of The Owl House crew didn't have much creative control for most of season 1, the body swap episode only exists because Disney forced Dana to create it, it was not on the original plans, Dana said on Twitter that the first episode where she had almost full creative freedom and where she felt she was creating her own show in the way she wanted was episode 16, and from episode 16 onward The Owl House truly becomes The Owl House and it gets WAY better.
i wouldn't call once upon a swap the weakest episode, i personally don't like really small problems too the point where its the only one i don't rewatch

I still think it's weird that they never changed Lilith back after this episode and she just stays a dog for the rest of the show, even if it did lead to that one really fun episode with the dog escaping through the portal in her body and Luz and Boscha having to team up to get it back while avoiding being seen by Luz's mum.
Also Dana Terrace confirmed that Witch and Human average lifespans are the same, which makes sense since Witches seem to be a species of Humans, maybe they are Homo Magicus.
My headcanon is that a small population of humans came to the boiling isles in the same way magic things leak into our world, and then evolved separately into witches
@Witch_Hunter_General when was that comfirmed? cause I don't remember dana ever saying that, honestly,I'm sad that's the case, cause I was thinking (and hoping) since they have magic that they can live for at least 3oo or 400 years at least, now I find it unfair that they don't get to live longer
Dana Terrace said once that witch lifespans and human lifespans are roughly equivalent. This may come in during a future episode, but yeah, humans and witches live about the same number of years on average.
I always thought the detention worms might be based off the VHS cover art for Jason Goes to Hell. I feel like Dana might be just old enough to have also been traumatized by that popping up in grocery stores and Blockbuster.
I find Boscha oddly endearing. In a world of giant demons and skin-eating fairies, she's just a regular old jerk who wants to be popular at school. Familiar and comforting in its normality
A lot of the episodes in Season One have a lot of very standalone 'kid's trope' storylines (which shows Disney's corporate influence), but even then, as with these, they managed to sneak some actual lore in.
You know with you being a Gravity Falls fan, I thought King in Luz's body would remind you of Bill possessing Dipper or something. Especially the voice. XD
What I love abt Eda and Luz's relationship is how it develops through the series. Just in ep2 Eda couldn't even remember Luz's name. She still rescued her from Adegast, but I feel like that was more due to Eda feeling responsible for Luz then anything else. And here in ep9 Eda is ready to sacrifice some of her ideals for Luz's greater good and future, which clearly comes from caring. Eda is such a mother figure, no matter what she says. The main part of ep9's plot was also quite interesting. I feel like usually we see Luz showcasing her flaws in not accepting reality and trying to change it in an unrealistic way. But here it was Gus who was doing it. It clearly was a result of his low self-esteem, signs of which we saw in ep6, so I absolutely love the growth he got this ep. He really is a great character.
10th-ing the people saying 1x08's considered the weakest, so thanks for rolling it into a two-parter :D Eda's incidents to a Breakfast Club montage is really a highlight.
Yeah episode 8 is considered the worst episode of the show because of how "filler-ish" it feels but personally I still love it! The dynamics with the body swapping, are always a treat to watch.
You have to get branded with a sigil when you join a coven, not just the Emperor's Coven. The sigil seals away all your magic except for the theme of that coven. In the case of the Emperor's Coven, they can use any magic but still have to be branded.
This first one is the one weaker episode out of TOH, but still fun. Body swap is an overused trope, but still nice for the character dynamics. I I love how they still keep their facial expressions even when changing bodies. And the other episode shows how Eda cares for Luz, in her own strange way. We love the Owl mom. ❤

In some ways different, in some ways similar 2) Steven Universe - a show with 1 of the most interesting lore systems ever abt mental health 3) She-Ra and the Princesses of Power (2018) - a nice spin on the chosen 1 trope with quite a few unexpected turns.

It's worth noting that once upon a swap is THE filler episode of the owl house. it's goofy fun, but is pretty universally the low point of the show. it's also kind of the end of the show being one off episodes, and the start of it being more plot focused generally. The show picks up VERY significantly a few episodes from now, just stick with it, you'll understand why it's so beloved as we get into the back half of season 1.
