    Just an FYI for those of you considering the 460 conversion in a Glock. The staff at Johnny Rowlands place said the Springfield XD and XDm was better for the conversion than the Glock. Its worth giving them a call.They may have changed their view since I did mine a couple of years ago! BTW...I absolutely love my 460....gives me a lot of piece at mind in the woods!

      Another FYI is to not buy shitty Springfield products because they helped pass gun control bills. Awful company that’s anti-American.

    You seem to know what people want to see when looking at a rarer cartridges ammo test. Speed of the round, power behind it and the recoil 1h/2h. Thumbs up.

    the single stack 10rd mags work great. The 13rd mags IF they have the wide mag spring inside (usually see them in gen4 mags) that seems to work pretty good most of the time. I'm going to try out a heavy duty mag spring from ISMI I just found out about.

  • @AmmoTest
    @AmmoTest  11 лет назад +3

    hard to describe. It's a different recoil. It's mostly concussion I think. The actual recoil or what you feel in your hands isn't that bad really. The rowland brake seems to make the recoil abrupt but over fast. The LWD brake (now have had a chance to try that) smooths the recoil out.
    I think the best would be the new rowland brakes that are also vented to the side along with the huge top ports.
    I should do a video on it and show a comparison. I'll put it on my list :)

    I've got a 460 Rowland kit on my SR1911, fun stuff.
    I always bring 2 guns if I shoot in an indoor range, my 460 Rowland and my Glock 20 with the 9x25 dillon barrel. I purposely load up my ammo for maximum flash and boom, just to wake people up! :)

      Yea Rowland is really cool.....it is a little more powerfull than 10mm, but ammo is more and allot harder to find....10mm is getting very popular Go on ammoseek.com and take a look around. See how many more 10mm there is, as well as the ability to shoot .40 sw no conversion needed... Glock 20 can shoot cheap .40sw, or expensive, .40sw, cheap 10mm or expensive 10mm with out any conversions.For the 10mm 135 grain loads going 1600 fps are only 38 bucks for box of 50.... For the .460 rowloand box of 50 is only 10 bucks more at 48 dollars, they have 185 grain loads going 1575 which is impressive. Thoose 2 quotes are from underwood ammo.com, you saw the load I was talking about in the video, 185 grain Rowland , he got 1600 fps in the video, the fastest bullet he tested.. Very good ammo at the best price for such hot loaded ammo. So If you need that extra power I guess go for the .460. G20 in 10mm is enough power for me,seen it drop a white tail deer dead in its tracts , marines and rangers use it for polar bear protection....can hold 15 in standard magazine

  • @GetMeThere1

    This is just an AWESOME cartridge. I've been looking into it further, and it's exactly what I would want in a hi-powered pistol round. And everyone says the compensator makes it REALLY practical. I'd be most interested in going for accuracy--to try to make something that could really perform out to, say 200 yards or more. A Clark custom, built on a Caspian 1911 high capacity frame, with maybe 7" barrel, is looking possible...
    Thanks for your great info!

    Excellent ammunition velocity test video! I love the 10mm but I've come to love the .460R even more! These days I consider my 10mm's to be my "compact carry" pistols and my big, heavy, all-steel 1911 in .460R my field gun, and for even more power, my 6.61" barrel "Longslide" Glock .460R conversion!
    Unfortunately the .460R needs stronger bullets than the thin-skinned, expanding ammo built to impress the gelatin test at subsonic speeds. The newer, all-copper bullets seem to be capable of deep penetration with light bullet weights at the highest velocities, and and intermediate bullet would seem to be a thick-jacket, TC design in any weight, loaded as fast as possible.

    • @gregalcorn-pu5ye
      @gregalcorn-pu5ye Год назад +1

      Yeah you're absolutely right about the bullets they need the same type that they use in 44 mags and 41 mag

    Also thanks for this vid! Man I wonder if that 185 grain bonded gold dot would even hold together in ballistic gel at those speeds.
    One suggestion - as a quick reference you should just post the velocity/energy table in the video description in a copy pastable format. I'd love to show the results to some of my friends\family without having to seek through the video to find it.

    With my Glock longslide conversion all of Underwood's .460R loads fed and functioned 100%. When I put together my 1911 .460R, the Underwood 185 grain bonded core jammed solidly against the barrel ramp. Granted the barrel ramp on the Clark conversion is quite steep in order to provide almost a full 100% case support, so my first inclination was to blame the conversion unit. However, all .45 ACP ammo whether "ball" profile, or blunt, X-treme 185 gr. TC slid right into the chamber no problem! I also noted that Underwood's 255 gr. HC chambered smoothly 100% of the time, and the 230 gr. bonded core chambered about 50:50.
    I checked OAL and found these blunt nose bullets to be loaded to the OEM maximum of 1.275". I learned a long time ago that having the cartridge slightly "shorter" than maximum tends to promote feed reliability and own handloaded 230 ball rounds are only 1.265". This means the .460R blunt nose bullet profile is striking the frame ramp earlier with less angular leverage. The lead rounds feed because they have a rounded nose cone profile whereas the nosler style 185 and 230 grain loads have a true truncated cone profile which works to allow the nose of the bullet to tuck in right at the junction between frame and barrel ramp and stop solid. At the same time, my MUCH shorter X-treme bullet 185 gr. TC plated has a very sharp corner transition between nose meplat and nose cone, yet feeds perfectly into the Rowland chamber....the reason being the OAL is much shorter, allowing the round to move further forward before the nose must deflect upward, at which point the rim is free of the magazine feed lips and the whole thing just "pops" right up under the extractor and feeds right in!
    Technically speaking, the TC style HP bullets should be seated so the case mouth is level with the transition from bullet nose to body, or slightly deeper, yet they are basically seated about the same as if they were seated into .45 Auto cases, yet this means COAL is much longer for the TC nose style leading to feed malfunctions in the 1911 style system. Granted, in the Glock they all feed perfectly...so there's that.
    I suspect this is also how Underwood gets that little bit extra performance....by seating the bullets more shallow they can load more powder for greater velocity without going over pressure.
    I've been sitting here thinking I'll have to hand load FMJ "ball" for feed reliability in the 1911, yet after comparing .45 Auto to Underwood .460R it's obvious the feed issue is caused by the rounds being overly long.

      How much more velocity are you getting out of that long slide

    • @FredFix
      @FredFix 11 месяцев назад

      @@gregalcorn-pu5yeI have a 6.61" barrel in 460 on my Glock 21 and I had a chart the showed the different speeds. After a certain length the speed did not go up that much because Lone Wolf had a goofy longer barrel I was tempted to buy but the speed gains made it not worth it plus it made the Glock hard to use concealed lol. I think the barrel was like 12" long.
      It has been years since I did my Glock project and I bought a bunch of stuff for it. I have stock, super 45 and 460 barrels and a comp. I bought all sorts of stuff and some of it I never even installed but it is just fun to have it all.
      My Glock is beside me all in stock form. Loaded and on the nightstand with a trigger guard for SD that I will (hopefully) never need.

    Hi, the g20 and G21 frames are the identical. So all you'd need is a G21 upper/slide, G21 mags (gen4 work best), and of course the 460rowland barrel. I'm told you can shoot 45acp through the 460rowland barrel as well. I haven't had time to really test that though.

    thanks. sure the 460 rowland is dedicated upper as the brake is loctited on. I would only go with the brake version. I can not see the ported version reducing the recoil enough to make it fun to shoot like it is with the brake.
    They say you can shoot 45acp out of the rowland but it just doesn't seem like a good idea to me as the 45acp would index off the extractor. Maybe weak 45acp. Each to his own I guess.

    Reference your reply to tenmauto a year ago:

    460 Rowland's web site has small shims that stick to two sides of the Glock magazine making the mag fit tighter than stock mag do in the Glock.( no slop)
    Rowland saids these shims keep the mag from being damaged. I bought two and they do fit nice without the mag moving around.
    Rowland also has Glock magazine springs with extra power. I bought two springs also and they fit very easily .
    I'll be using my Glock 21 460 rowland for hunting so Im not worried that the mag fitting somewhat tight I like it better than wiggling around. When the mag is released it does drop
    some but not like a lose stock mag would drop.

    It is my understanding that 460 rowland pressures are not in the extreme range for modern materials, chambers and barrels. The .45 ACP's relatively low pressures are great for older guns with older designs, tolerances and pressure specs such as the traditional 1911's. The case size difference is specifically so it won't chamber in these older guns.

  • @STI1911
    @STI1911 12 лет назад

    Those advertised velocity is actually measured out of a 1911 instead from a glock 21, so if it was shot out of a 1911 it would actually get a little more velocity than from a G21

    I would try the stock mags first. They work fine with 40 super so I don't see why they wouldn't work with 460rowland...I've shot the g30 rowland very little but haven't had any problems yet.
    Still working on the G21 rowland
    basically I have to get some more ammo to test them out more.
    Please report your findings. I would make sure the mags are fully loaded as that always causes the most problems and should give you the truest results/data.

  • @AmmoTest

    I tried that and also running just the 10rd mags as well as over the winter I bought some wide coil springs and I gotta pick up some ISM heavy duty springs to try as well. The 10rd mags should work.

    Wonder why 460R is so strong
    OK is because john use the fabulous 45win mag 😍 case and cutter down
    And deeper the bullet and couple of millimeters to increase the pressure 😲
    AND THE BEST PART IS WE CAN SHOOTER ON SOME 45acp PISTOLS
    This reminds me
    38spl & 357mag or .40 & 10mm
    Super good idea👍😊✌

    btw his long slide is a newer solid top. so that adds more weight. Guess it all depends on how much slide speed is generated. 230gr @ well over 1400 (my guess from a 6" barrel) your getting into 1100-1200ft/lbs territory. I guess I just can't see how you wouldn't require a comp on a gun that was meant to handle at most say half of that amount of energy.

  • @AmmoTest
    @AmmoTest  11 лет назад

    btw - I've now heard from several sources saying it's no problem to shoot 45acp 45super threw a 460rowland barrel.
    Either way - G29 10mm G30 40 super G30 45super G30 460rowland...a compensator goes a long way!!!

  • @AmmoTest

    I would not go "cheap" on a setup that puts out 1000ftlbs ...probably double what the gun was ever designed to take.
    I sold my setup to my friend and here is how I replaced it -
    Bar-Sto Precision threaded barrel - 5.3" - $305 and it's unreal accurate.
    22lb Bar-Sto Precision captured guide rod and spring - they are the only ones that make guide rods out of 400 series SS which is hard vs the rest out there at 300 series SS.
    Looking for a good Comp - Have lone wolf right now...it's so so

    460rowland is a 45 barrel with a chamber that is reamed out a little longer ie. the 460rowland case is .06 longer than a .45acp case. rest of the dimensions are the same.
    Well honestly The G29 and G30 are a lot to handle with out a compensator on the gun. Even with the heaviest spring. I mean when your talking the heaviest hottest loads etc.
    I did a video on the G30 - 40 super conversion. You might find that of interest.

  • @AmmoTest

    I'd say your lower/frame is versatile. G21 & G20 frames are exactly the same. So it sounds like you just need a G21 slide and 460 barrel and some mags. Then you have...
    Out of G20 you can get barrels for - 10mm, 40sw, 9x25Dillon, 9x23, 38super, 357sig and yes even 9mm.
    Out of the G21 you can get barrels for - 460rowland, 45acp and if full support you can do 45super out of the 45acp bbl, then 400 corbon and my fav 40 super. I've done some vids on 400 corbon and 40 super as well.

    The lone wolf compensator is ported mostly on the sides and not so much on the top. It works fine but in my experiences it blows crap back into your face.
    yeah I'm working on trying to find someone that makes them besides 460rowlandcom. I think it's a better design over the lone wolf.

    Thanks for the quick reply. Been subscribed for quite a while like what you do on your channel. Just curious why did you sell the original conversion was there something you was not happy with? Just trying to figure out which direction to go in.

    It seems really controllable even with the 230s comin out of the light weight polymer platform of the glock (as compared to a 1911). Does the brake just screw on to the end of the barrel? Did you locktite?Ive read that with the increased slide velocity the mag spring can be inadequate to push a new round up into battery before the slide is forward again causing failure to feeds and thus requiring a double mag spring to remedy. Have you used or made any magazine modifications prior to this vid?

    I see that Lone Wolf makes a 460 Rowland conversion barrel, and it looks like numerous other manufacturers do, too. Any experience with these other manufacturers? Who manufactured the barrel for your conversion? How many rounds have you put through your glock and have you noticed any accelerated wear on the weapon?

    Great video! Thanks for posting it. Have you shot any .45 ACP through your Glock since doing the conversion? I am considering the conversion myself, but am curious if .45 ACP is still an inexpensive option for pinking at the range.

      If you're going to be interchanging for 60s with 45 acps and plus p you'll probably need to get that V2 damper system they interchange smoothly with that damper system in them check it out

    Since you have first uploaded this, have you continued to shoot many rounds through the Glock and how has it held up. There isn't much info on how long the gun will stay together shooting this bullet. Thanks

    Have you found any damage to your breech face due to the high pressures for .460 Rowland. My G21 has developed an indentation at the firing pin slot due to firing .460 Rowland and I am trying to find out if it is just my pistol, or are there others. It looks exactly like the primers are pounding the steel inward.

    Have you run many of the powerful rounds through your converted G21 (10mm, 460rowland, 45 super etc...) I've read that the glocks are not "really" built to withstand these beastly cartridges, I wanted to know how yours is holding up? Obviously, you can run this hot stuff for a little while but, do you think the gun will beat itself apart significantly quicker than shooting only .45acp? Or, has it already reached the end of its lifespan?

    • @AmmoTest
      @AmmoTest  10 лет назад +1

      can get around the wear by..
      460rowland - use heavier recoil spring and brake and full supported bbl.
      40 super - use heavier recoil spring and brake if you choose and full supported bbl.
      10mm - use heavier recoil spring and brake if you choose and full supported bbl.
      I have 15,000+ rds of HOT 10mm through my G20. Fully supported (Bar-Sto prec.) barrel and 22lb wolff recoil spring and guide rod. I don't see any signs yet. The Bar-Sto is rated to maintain it's accuracy to 75,000 rds.
      In my opinion the 40 super and 460rowland really really require a brake in ADDITION to the fully supported barrel (bar-sto kkm), and heavier recoil spring. I would use the 22lb wolff guide rod and spring for all of those. I would NOT use the 24lb spring. The wire they use for the 24lb is thicker.
      I've tested and tested and re tested and 22lb wolff is the sweet spot.
      The flat wire springs are sub par for these heavy calibers. The flat wire might rate at 22lb or 24lb or whatever but it's a different kind of spring then a wolff round spring. The round springs just reduce recoil more, in the real world.

    Oh but do you think it would work without the comp? And check eBay I believe you can find the comps there

  • @AmmoTest
    @AmmoTest  11 лет назад +1

    thank you. Because my friend is cheap and impatient. lol and from what I've been able to do with the few barsto barrels I have now. I figured a Bar-Sto 45 reamed out to 460 would be a more accurate barrel than the Storm Lake barrel that 460rowlandcom uses.
    Plus I personally don't care for Storm Lake's customer service.
    If you go Lone Wolf - I'd order it as a 460rowland directly from them. Not a 45 then send it back. But im not imrpessed by them for a lot of reasons. Get what u pay for...

    I guess if you wanted one upper ie. the 460rowland to do it all I would give them a call and see what actual experiences they've had with shooting 45acp through it. Im guessing the worse thing that could happen would be you ruining an extractor?

    460 Rowland.com's source for Glock 30 barrels has dried up.From what i understand they couldnt find one any where in the U.S. They found a company in Austria. I waited three months for a barrel and from just looking at the barrel compaired to my 460 Rowland Glock 21 barrel.The finish not quite on par with Stormlake.Fuctionality with this new Austrian barrel will be the real test as i have not tried it yet.Wondering what pound recoil spring you recommend with the Glock 30 460 Rowland?

  • @dr.burtgummerfan439

    I saw a listing on an auction site for a 9" ported barrel in 460 Rowland for the Glock 21. I was wondering if the extra barrel length (and weight) plus the porting, would negate the need for a compensator? Would the barrel/slide lockup be prolonged due to the longer barrel? I know that's the main reason for the comp. I've got a 460 Rowland conversion for my Taurus PT1911 and a 460 Rowland upper on an MPA pistol. (that one rocks and kicks a LOT, even with a comp!).

    Question. Are the Rowland 460 rounds more expensive, or harder 2 find than regular .45 acp loads? What was done exactly 2 make the recoil of the Glock 21 in this video more aggressive? Is there kit? I'm feeling the compensator, on the gun! Nice video.

    • @gregalcorn-pu5ye

      They are more expensive but not hard to find

    • @gregalcorn-pu5ye

      I would target practice with standard pressure 45 or plus p but in order to do that smoothly you'll probably need to get A v2 damper system what that you'll be able to feed anything in and it from a 45 ACP standard pressure all the way up to 460 Rowland smoothly it is worth the cost

    yeah I should put a note in about the mag. I have a wolff extra power spring. Thanks.
    Final stats are at end of video at 10:20. Sorry don't know how to put it into a format you could copy. Maybe in the description not sure it would come through alright..
    185 - well no one complains when 223 5.56 rds break up ...wouldn't be all bad! I guess I don't know. It would be a neat test to see!
    brake - just screws on - I locktited on.

    My friend just bought one not to long ago. Still waiting on a lwd comp to come in stock and then we'll find out. Will it work? I think it'll work fine. I think the 22 or 24lb glockmeister ss rod would be the way to go.
    The question I have though is Will it gain THAT much more velocity? I have my doubts but I will post a video when we test it. :)
