Look I'm a black firefighter and I just want to hit a couple points. First..he most likely didn't pick where he was stationed. You usually find out where you're going after you graduate from the academy. Second..a fire department needs to consists of mature adults that take this job/life seriously, yet at the same time have a sense of humor and know that some things aren't done maliciously and done out of just good fun and brotherhood. We do racial things to each other in the station all the time but it's mutually considered a term of endearment. If we play around with each other and laugh and argue and disagree but we stay brothers that's all that matters. These dudes are to soft and sensitive just like the red part in that watermelon

Free black people grew, ate, and sold watermelons, and in doing so made the fruit a symbol of their freedom. Southern whites, threatened by blacks’ newfound freedom, responded by making the fruit a symbol of black people’s perceived uncleanliness, laziness, childishness, and unwanted public presence. This racist trope then exploded in American popular culture, becoming so pervasive that its historical origin became obscure. Few Americans in 1900 would’ve guessed the stereotype was less than half a century old.
But I agree...this be some bullshit for dude to be fired over a fucking waterrmelon

Dinkelstein Kerman It's because people still use those things to be racist. Until people stop using certain things to be racist and when it doesn't effect the people they are being racist to negatively. There is no leaving it in the past then. I do understand intent means everything, but I mean there are still things that aren't in the past yet.

The watermelon stereotype came from slavery when Africans brought over seeds from Africa when they were captured and brought here. It’s a really simple fruit to tend to and grow and that’s what they would farm when they were slaves . Whites would mock them and create ads making fun of black people for it and that’s where the stereotype comes from I believe

  • @TheCasperDelta
    @TheCasperDelta 7 лет назад +8

True. He shouldn't have gotten fired over something like this. It's honestly BS. But to people saying that people should just get over things or to not be offended by other things, you dont get to control the way people feel or react to something. Just because you can brush something off doesn't mean everyone else can or even should.
David was right about the situation getting blown out of proportion but saying that they shouldn't have cared and that it was just fruit speaks to the fact that he just doesnt understand the full situation, which is perfectly fine given the fact that he isnt a racist white person or a black person who has been subjugated by these specific kinds of racist acts. But he cant tell others who do understand it and feel a certain way about it to just get over it.
If you step on my shoes you cant tell me how i should feel or react to it. I'll react the way I see fit.

I am not Asian and In my culture they eat chicken feet too. So I don't see how that only relates to Asian .maybe I just don't know that stereotype maybe it just isn't as widespread as the watermelon stereotype . I do see how Watermelon relates to black culture bc it was a racial stereotype for black people . The fruit was used to symbolize black people it was used to symbolize many of the same qualities as it was in post emancipation America the messiness of eating the fruit and how it is unwanted in public presence . It is a literal stereotype for black people and degrade them . However , I don't think the person should have been fired simply for bringing a watermelon and I think he was probably low-key fired for another reason and this was simply an excuse

On a real note, I've experienced many talks revolving around my race during first meetings. My old friends' boyfriend had to ask me if I loved fried chicken, kool-aid, watermelon and if I owned a bunch of pitbulls. I was laughing at first because it was a silly question. But throughout the night it felt like he would only talk to me when it was a question about whether or not I was a stereotypical black person. I was just stared at in a very uncomfortable way all night so to hush him up I asked him if he had lemon trees in his backyard, a pet Chihuahua, and if he owned a pitbull named Chi Chi or something. We laughed and the race related conversations ended.

We know you can choose the type of ad length, etc within your own video. Please spare us the non-skip ad option -Signed, JKNewsWatcher P.S. The stigmatism of watermelon and black people can be seen in the constant portrayal in benial movies and cartoons in history. Immersion can be seen as acted by the black crows in Disney movies or the term "black face" where blacks are stereotyped as a certain look. People tie all of that together. To me, it's just watermelon but to others it is the calculated history.

A guy in my brother's unit got in a lot of shit for being racist. My brothers told me that in the army(and maybe other branches) everyone is seen as a soldier instead of race or skin color. I wish I could have gone into the military.

If the watermelon was brought in the winter, I'd be skeptical. Every other season I would probably not be.

Watermelon is an easy fruit to grow and high in water content. So the stereotype comes from during the era of slavery in America when the African slaves would eat it in order to stay hydrated because they weren't given water, food etc. It became a sign of racism when whites later depicted black people as lazy and ignorant caricatures in minstrel plays or pickninny drawings...and they were often sitting around eating watermelon. And it's also similarly why the chicken stereotypes exist..because it was an inexpensive protein that poor southern blacks could afford/raise in the past...and racists would use that to generalize.
So yes, watermelon is delicious. And yes almost everyone in the world likes it...but unfortunately it can have racist connotations when involving black people.

David is basically my fucking brain in a nutshell! Just make everything into a joke, don't fucking make a simple inactive object a sign of fucking racism. Don't know why people in 2017 are still having this sensitive bullshit issue. Preach that shit David!!! 😎🤘

I mean, that's true. Maybe this black person holds watermelon as a symbol of racism because they had experienced it before, or their old relatives had. We all perceive things differently. However, the true argument here imo is was the consequence well deserved? I think not. The firefighters could've easily had a mature discussion to let the white firefighter know that his joke wasn't cool, and warn him.

Firefighters can apply to a station, but that doesn't automatically mean that's where they'll be assigned.

Let it go! I live in Detroit, we have 60,000 fires a year. We can't afford to lose any fire fighters! Didn't they watch the Netflix documentary?
