I've had the UHD65 for 8 months now and as much as I love its performance, I do wish for greater brightness and contrast, thus I am contemplating selling it in favor of the UHZ65. Ultimately, I want the richest viewing experience possible for my budget and the UHZ would be a long-term investment worth the price - if - it is in fact that much sharper and vibrant.
Thanks for the review. Its a shame you didn't have the UHD65 to compare the UHZ65 against as i think that is going to be the choice for most people looking at this project. From what I could tell from your comparison the UHZ65 had a much better contrast ratio on screen as advertised. Would be interesting to see the difference in brightness between UHZ65/UHD65.
We would love to have been able to test all three together but the UHD65 is only sold to specific retail stores with demo area's due to its need to have the right conditions. The big thing to take note of for us was just how much brighter the UHZ65 was compared to the UHD60 despite the same rated lumens. obviously this is down to to the colour wheel in the UHD60 but it just goes to show the spec sheet doesn't tell the whole story. - AS
Absolutely not! ANY projector is pretty bad for you if you look into it (accidentally or not) but the brighter they are the worse it is so yes this one is not going to be good at all. Laser or lamp doesnt make any difference though, its just the sheer brightness. - AS
my only experience with laser projectors is with my Voga V projector smartphone and that raises a question concerning UHZ65: Is it speckle free and how it compares to UHD60 in that area?
Yes it is absolutely speckle free. We would guess that the tech behind the phone versions and the projectors are very different. For a start there is a lot more space to add filters and other picture improving tech. Also this is a DLP projector with a laser light source. There is no doubt that the UHZ65 out-performed the UHD60 in everything except the response time which would only potentially affect the more hardcore gamers out there.
Thought i saw somewhere that the UHD60 wasn't true 4K. Was tempted to buy one but, no 3D and for the cost could keep just replacing the bulbs every six months in my current HD151x. So does the laser not fade with time as that is the big draw back with lamp projector. Not just bulb life, but brightness over it's life span. Hd151x is fantastic, with new bulbs!
If i remember correctly the 20000 hours is to half brightness for the laser, so it will reduce lumens over time but much less than a bulb. You are correct in that the UHD60 isn't native 4K. it runs a 2716 x 1528 resolution which is then effectively pixel shifted to get the 4K. there are a few tests online that show how well this works on this projector though. the picture is stunning and its almost impossible to tell from a native sony 4k.
Going by some side by side analysis the Optoma is actually sharper: tvspro-816a.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/CloseFinal-1.jpg tvspro-816a.kxcdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/Blacks-1.jpg
sony pictures are more 'life-like'. Optoma, produces strong colors, making them slightly un-real. (like red will be more red, green will be more green etc.) @@jpbonadio
Depends what you mean by outdoor? if you mean get it out in the back garden every now and then well the UHD60 is rather large, The BenQ might struggle with brightness depending on the amount of outside light. Best to try getting something with a higher brightness. If you mean a permanent fixture outside for events then the UHD 60 would be a good choice, or even the UHZ65 as it wont lose brightness over time as much as the bulb ones would.
My intentions are to use it after dusk for night time viewing and indoors where there is little to no ambient light. I was looking into going with 4K since this is my first projector
We certainly had no problems with the games we played on it. for general gaming its extremely unlikely you will notice it, even if you could it would not be enough to spoil your gaming. If you were trying to play online and had a slow ping of say 100ms, then adding this to the 80ms on the projector could become a problem for some really fast games though.
No these are the top of the range :) Although compared to other laser projectors this is actually VERY cheap. Still worth a watch though to see where the tech is going? - AS
I have never seen a rainbow on my 92" Mitsubishi DLP yet I noticed at least 3 rainbows on the Optima. 15% lens shift is not enough unless you like the projector at 29db hovering over your head or like your screen mounted high. I like to be looking at or near the center of the screen which is a optimal position. Either way 29db is to loud, spend a few extra dollars and put in some quiet fans and find out what Mitshubishi did to the 92" and take not. A loud projector with rainbows mounted right above my head is unacceptable for $5,000. Fix these problems and I'm in. DLP chips produce a very sharp picture that I would like to see any Sony try to match. They are not susceptible to motion blur because the micro mirrors are so fast in their movement.
In usage we didnt notice any rainbows at all on either of these projectors and we were using them for a good few hours. The reason that you may see the odd one on the video is because it was shot at 24fps and the videos we had were all 60fps (projectors were also at 60Hz as they were connected to a PC) so there could have bee a frame sync issue. We should have filmed at 60 but it was too late to go back and re-shoot it all :) . Can't say much for the 29db as our environment was not as quiet as a home setup but it certainly didn't seem loud. - AS
Motion was handled very well IMO. i prefer a bit of smoothing so generally i would have the motion processing on a low setting. having not tested it against a different brand though its hard to say if it would be better or worse. The UHZ65 seemed slightly smoother than the UHD60 but it was extremely close on the content we tested. - AS
The UHZ65 is an amazing projector. I'll be buying one at the end of the year when my new home theater room is ready.
Awesome. its a great projector and laser is the way forward. :) - AS

The HDZ65 puremotion work in 4k?
Having owned both the UHD60 and the UHZ65. I can say that the UHZ is much better.
I have a dedicated room but my walls are white. The project will be used for mainly watching sports and tv. Which one would you choose.

I have the UHD65 and love it but I do have my eye already on the UHZ65. Maybe sometime soon I'll be able to upgrade.
Can I connect Bluetooth sound bar on them?
Gosh that is a remarkable difference! Is it safe re your eyes if you were to briefly catch the light in your eyes?
Absolutely not! ANY projector is pretty bad for you if you look into it (accidentally or not) but the brighter they are the worse it is so yes this one is not going to be good at all. Laser or lamp doesnt make any difference though, its just the sheer brightness. - AS
I would like to know if there is any drop in picture quality if you project images close to 250"diagonal?!
Hi will you be getting a optoma uhl55 for review thanks
What are your thoughts on the UHZ45, that looks like a winner! :)
Up till today I had not heard of Optoma. This machine is awesome. What a great giveaway. Good luck peeps
Optoma has been making projectors in the professional / corporate market since the early 2000’s.

Phone projector? That can’t possibly compare at all

Thx for this video!
Can you recommend a good projector for outdoor use I was looking at the the UHD60 and the BenQ 2550. Thank you for your advice.

Need someone who has a uhz65 to detail how the input lag is with games. Can’t find any information on this with any forum.

Saw brand Optoma and thought cheap but these are not low end

Laser is the future.
Optoma UHZ65 all day long for home cinema
No money for the UHZ65 and now I'm doubting every beamer I CAN afford bc it looks bad compared to the UHZ..
LOL. easy to do! if you havent had a projector before then you will be blown away no matter what you buy. :)
I'm watching this video because the voice of this beautiful lady make me feel better
We will let Nikki know :) - AS
Can't wait for black friday and cyber monday for z65 :)
You would absolutely notice that lag

Scan Computers how does it handle motion for the 24p or (23.976) content? Without adding motion interpolation of course.
Motion was handled very well IMO. i prefer a bit of smoothing so generally i would have the motion processing on a low setting. having not tested it against a different brand though its hard to say if it would be better or worse. Man, those units are huge (that's what she said). I wish it was true 4k and not pixel shifted. Pixel shifted is as good as 1080p.
I'm pretty sure the epson 5040ub outperforms the optoma uhd60.
Nice
if you are doing a lot of gaming dont buy a projector at all. you would have to be awful at games to not notice 33ms let alone 80
I bought my UHD550x which is just under the UHD60 - and paid 1050 quid
WOW thats a great price for a UHD550X - second hand surely? either way its a great deal. :)
