    I actually placed this palette side by side beside the larger enamelled one and the drop angle of the lid is actually about the same as the larger one. It just looks steeper because its smaller.
    Ive used it for over a decade now for small moleskine and sketchbook work. Very handy tool.

    I absolutely love Schmincke paints! And I Love watching people swatch them.. So I dont usually buy sets of watercolors anymore; in the beginning i did, to bulk up my collection (but in the past Ive always been disappointed with either the color selection or the palette or the price lol) but now I just buy a few colors at a time, its easier for me to make a $20-$30 purchase of a few colors then one large $70+ puchase for a pre-set palette---Tho i totally understand that its super fun to unbox a beautiful palette of colors sometimes... Anyway such a great video! Thanks for sharing, much love❤💙

      Thank you for watching and commenting Nadeane. Schmincke paints are very nice indeed. I agree that it's better to buy a few colors at at time and build your own set but in this case it was actually cheaper to buy the palette full of Schmincke pans than it was to buy empty.

    I got the version without watertank + pot and I think you were slightly unlucky, because my palette is in pretty good condition. I bought an empty palette and filled it with my fav. colours. I had the same problem with the palette on my table it was really wanky. I supportet the back with adhesive felt which works perfect. You can also add additional 4 1/2 in the middle row to carry in total 12 1/2 pans.

    Hi Jay!
    I've really been enjoying your videos lately.
    I always wanted this palette as well. I've had mine for over a year now. I agree with your color selection comment. I would have selected a slightly different batch of colors as well. I thought there would be enough room to put another row of paints down the center. There isn't. Also the water in the flask becomes polluted. White chunks float out in the paint water. A sturdy clip can keep the water cup from falling off. I figured out that if you use the slightly smaller porta palette pans you can get 14 color in the bijiou palette. I usually carry extra water with me. There are lots of things about the palette that aren't quite right. But I still like it. It is very compact. And, yes I admit it is cute too.

    You are the king of pallets !!!. Really, I love Schminke Watercolors, but I definitely don't like that palette. But it has a good thing, you can fill with some real whiskey, like Jameson, that will make you happy painting (just a joke). I really like the transparency of the sepia, it seems to me an interesting color.

  • @jennw6809
    @jennw6809 2 года назад +7

    Last year when I got back into watercolors, I wanted a Schmincke pan palette so badly (only because of RUclips of course!) But then I poured my own half pan palette of Daniel Smith and hated the tiny, rattly pans; I discovered this type of palette is not my thing. So I'm glad I didn't buy a set like this, and poured my own Schmincke palette instead. I just have them in a cheapie plastic palette, haha, but it works -- and has nice big wells! However, I think this palette is totally clever... I love the idea you could carry it and one brush and small sketchbook, and be able to paint anywhere, even if you hadn't planned to. Although, for me, that is more of an aspirational dream than a reality. It is disappointing that it isn't made super well; it should be for the price!
    Also, I actually love the color selection. Despite the odd name, the Olive Green seems like a completely reasonable convenience mix for landscape or florals, for those who like greens in the palette. (I know you don't, but of course many people do.) I have Permanant Carmine -- love it -- it's quite a unique and pleasing shade of that pigment, so it's great that they included it for floral/garden painting purposes. Yeah, I'd prefer Burnt Umber as well (and I'm sure you'd prefer more earths), but I get it... the Sepia is a really pleasing shade, makes a good dark for the palette and I imagine it mixes with the Ochre to make a nice middle brown. Adding touches of Cad Scarlet should make wonderful earth reds.
    You know how I said I'd love to see a same-painting, two palettes video with the W&N professional palette you made? It would be amazing to put it against this one. Just a thought. I know those must be a lot of work, but very instructive to watch!

    I agree with everyone else send photo to Jackson's. They are suppose to be really good about customer service. No help there do same with Schminke. I would like a small palette like that. I wouldn't be so indecisive about what color to use. But I agree-not my ideal color choices. Kimberly Crick says most Prussian Blues aren't light fast. I'd switch the sepia for a burnt sienna also.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  3 года назад +2

      Jackson's customer service has always been good in my experience.
      I had seen quite a few things about Prussian blue not being all that lightfast. Isn't it supposed to fade over time in sunlight but then change back to original color when left out of sunlight? Or am I thinking of a different pigment?
      I am tempted to swap out the sepia too but the more I look at it the more I'm starting to like it. I will probably add a pan of burnt sienna down the centre of the palette.

    I have a similar vintage set from W&N which I bought many moons ago! I have a few of these heavy weight japanned boxes and they are never as flawless as you'd hope. I don't know why that should be. My first was a tiny W&N bijou 18 1/4 pan set which had tiny chips in the paint and so I got a discount on it. Its a gorgeous thing to carry if you have limited space and want to do some easy sketches when on a trip. I think I'd prefer to carry a water bottle and a collapsible water pot which I find really secure. Rather than teeter with the slightly loose water pot on this set, but if you find yourself with no place to set down pots and bottles this set really could be handy. One of my absolute favourites is this design without the water bottle element which you can get from Cornellissen's and will carry 12 half pans ( though I squeeze 14 in by turning them around). I think schmincke did a version of this too but it's very hard to find. I recently bought a slimline Schmincke set which is great for travel, it's paired down and the holders are directly on the tin so no additional weight from the insert. It carries 24 half pans or a long brush. I would probably use that for travel now as it gives me more options and a larger mixing surface.

    I have that one. It is my favourite compact palette. The finish is not great but it is better than yours. Also it is the only one that is solid locally in this shape. So I love my. The paint is chipped in pleases but I don’t mind. I use it as a main pallet with my selection of 12 colours. But if I’m completely honest I ad additional 2 half pans in the lid with magnets. I just love the shape of it. The mixing space is also in inefficient, but I mix my paintings in porcelain dish anyway so I don’t even use it anyway. Also I enjoy watching your videos.

    Well, I wouldn`t mind this palette whether I need it or not 😁 But that`s `cause I love beautiful and tiny things, not by practicality of it)) I love Schmincke and my first set of professional paints was their 12 full pan set.. Much later, going through different brands and pigments, I came back to love that gorgeous green, along with their phtalo green, that fine and delicate ultramarine blue (- despite the fact that their version of french ultramarine is my favorite), even the cadmiums and the Ivory black from the 12pan set..
    Although, if I could choose I`d switch a few, too.. (Or, even better, offer another basic set of 12 along with this one.. it`s not like they lack the options for two 😉)
    For example, since 2017. they have transparent sienna which I love, but the deeper transp. burnt umber I`d like to try.. They have the prettiest transparent orange and cobalt blue deep as well, for me..
    Enjoy your lovely paints and -at least looking at- your pretty palette))
    Edit: since this comment is already too long: they are pricey but last so long! ))

      @@JayNathanWatercolor agree. Olive green I haven`t tried though, but this one is beautiful. I find everyone has their notion of what the olive green should look like - I`m not a nature painter, but if I need an olive, I adjust my chrome oxide or undersea or green gold, blues, blacks, yellows)) I love too many pigments for such a small palette, unfortunately.. but when I get rich I`ll buy it just because ,)) 😁

    Gimmicky is the word that comes to mind. That´s not to sat that there isn´t something useful in painting with limited palettes and to have a convenient size to carry in a small bag, but I think it´s easier and more fun to make your own. There is a jazzy looking super thin mini-palette by Nomadic Artist out there, which you can fill with your own paints. Personally, I would prefer to recycle old mini-soap or lozenges tins, or upgrade a student grade travel palette with Schmincke paints. There´s a good example of this on channel Kenn Arsolon: My limited watercolour palette + landscape painting
    The small water bottle and container is of little practical value, in my opinion. Most people would be carrying water anyway, to drink. So a collapsible, but much more substantial size, water container would be a far better choice - it´s easy to fill and clean too.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  2 года назад +1

    I thought of getting this palette, too. The downside... It's really not practical if you need a few mixing compartments for specific colors you need. In small compact palette design.. I think QoR definitely wins. It's compact and more thoughtful designed than the tiny Schmincke palette.

    • @JayNathanWatercolor
      @JayNathanWatercolor  3 года назад +1

      Yes you're right. With this palette I find it's compactness to be both a positive and negative. I love how small it is with the water flask and water pot, it's so easy to take anywhere, but in reality it's actually too small to be practical for me. Maybe I'll change my thinking after some regular use.
      I don't think I've seen the QoR compact palette. Is it just the normal tin they sell?

    • @Christine_R
      @Christine_R 3 года назад
