Sir Mix-a-Lot said in an interview something like that he wasn't sure how good this song was until he sent it to the record company. They called back minutes later, saying they played it for some of their employees, and that he should get ready to make a lot of money. More than $100 million just from this song! Another great song is "O.P.P." by "Naughty by Nature."

Back then if a girl didn't look as underweight as an addict she was considered fat. This song was practically revolutionary. It definitely boosted my self esteem as a curvy girl who was told she needed to look skeletal to be attractive
Also..you HAVE to follow this up with Bubble Butt by Major Lazer. It's not nearly as iconic as this one...but based on your reaction to this one, I suspect it will be a lot of fun to see you react to it.

Exactly. You basically had to be an ironing board back then and this song went against that norm/image. I'd even say it started the shift away from an unhealthy body standard or at least contributed to the shift.

As a white guy who _always_ loved a bubble butt ever since I can remember, I was born too early. When I was in high school back in the day it drove me crazy that all the girls would think they were "fat" if they weren't flat as a board in the back. Those were tough times for men like me. Lol! It's probably why I was always so attracted to black and latina girls.
I loved this song when it came out and it's nice to see more recent generations FINALLY showing round booties the appreciation they deserve. 😉

Other great songs by Sir Mix-A-Lot are Buttermilk Biscuits, My Hoopty, and My Posse's on Broadway. He's from Seattle, which during the late 80s, wasn't a big rap nursery. But his songs are good, catchy, and funny, so they really became a favorite at that time. Great memories. Yes, Niki snagged that line from this song. "LA face with an Oakland booty." Great lyrics right there.

The "Me so horny" line comes from a line from the Viet Nam movie, Full Metal Jacket, a prostitute enticing American soliders. The line was also famously used in a song by 2 Live Crew called Me So Horney. I think Mix A Lot was referencing the song, not the movie

There have always been butt men but Sir Mixalot brought a Renaissance of butt appreciation
If you haven’t already done it: check out Fat Bottom Girls by Queen from about 1976
The Presidents of the United States was a tongue in cheek rock band from the early 90s on Sir Mixalot’s label. I think he discovered them or produced them (their big songs were Peaches & Lump)
If you want more humorous rap: someone suggested The Humpty Dance by Digital Underground
There is also Da’ Dip by Freak Nasty
Tone Lōc-Wild Thing, Funky Cold Medina
    Young MC-Busta Move

This song came out so long ago that as a kid, I had to sit around waiting for it to come onto the radio, which was almost never, and have the focus enough to not start enjoying, but rush over to the stereo to hit record on the cassette tape I had in the deck. I was like 8 or something and in summer camp the next day, proud as heck because of the crown jewel on my mix tape. I ended up trading it for a pair of brass knuckles that some kid randomly had. Then some older kid stole my brass knuckles and beat some other kid up later that day, and I never got them back. . . Sad times. This song takes me back though.
But butts were not really a thing back then. I mean, they were, everybody had them. But that wasn't like the 'it thing' everybody cared about. Girls wanted their butt as small as they couldI back then for the most part. A song like this probably gave black women in north america some confidence because they may have felt as if they were being judged according to white beauty standards. The beauty ideal people seemed to aspire to was that of a supermodel, curvy as a drawing of a stick figure. But that was mostly because that's what TV and magazines always showed.
Cyndy Crawford was the most popular pin-up girl of that era though. She was white, but she actually had curves. She probably tried to make her butt smaller, vs if she had come up today, it wouldn't have made her self conscious, and she likely would have tried to enhance it even.
But people have always been into butts. The ideal is cyclical though. It's curvy now, but it will go back to small, and then curvy again in time. But regardless of what's mainstream popular, there are always a ton of people who have tastes counter to the culture of the time and are not afraid to just like what they like.

Great song with lots of memorable lines. At the time, I didn't know what Red Beans and Rice was. I had to go look that up.
