My Dad was a transmission mechanic before he died. Supposedly he could determine what the problem was base of the vibration or noise of the of the tranny before even tearing it down and fixing it. He passed in 1975 I was 11yrs. old. I miss him taking me to the shop. I miss that smell that you only find in a repair shop. Those 5.4 3 valves.. eeekk.. Spark plugs breaking off in the head, really small oil passages makes oil sludge a big problem, and the cam phasors were the real killer. If I knew that it had really good oil change history i'd buy it.. otherwise no way in hell.
Exactly. My uncle found an '09 Expedition with it and the guy was the first owner and babied the hell out of it and had kept track of everything from oil changes to airing up the tires. That's the only type of 5.4 I'd ever buy lol
It doesn't sound like it was poorly maintained. If it was poorly maintained, it would sound like a Diesel and make an awful ticking noise when you accelerate, this one doesn't make that noise. My 06 navigator is at about 220k and it runs fine but sometimes when you come to a stop it makes a clacking noise. This isn't an issue if you change the oil alot and run full synthetic. the older 2V 5.4L and the 2 and 3V 4.6 Liters don't have the issue nearly as bad as the 5.4 3V

Great channel. I had a 5.4 3v, and had no problems at all. Sold it with 180K. Like the Ford tech said, it's about the original, poorly designed spark plug ceramic core, which sometimes broke off on removal, and keeping the oil clean with good oil and very good (not Fram) oil filters, which directly impacted lubing the timing chain tensioners, which led to timing chain and cam follower issues. Be aware of those sensitive issues and it's a solid engine.

I don’t care if you change the oil every 1000 miles, that 5.4 triton is not gonna last. I have had lots of experience with them and they are one of the worst gas engines I’ve ever encountered.
@@sandasturner9529 my uncle would agree with you, except he's busy pulling the cab off his so he can redo the top end. He spent $5500 to have a shop fix it, but it still overheats and he can't afford another repair bill
I have a 2001 f150 with 261000 miles and the 5.4 l 4x4 work truck extended cab. I sold my 2016 v8 lariat because I just like the old one better. Only issues are the gear shifter slipped so N is R and I stripped a coil pack screw and had to cut the coil pack to change the plug. Burns a touch of oil and the ac is shot, suspect mice in the system. Other than that, great truck. Bought 4 years ago for $3200 and has been my favorite vehicle.
Greetings from Kingsport my mom has an 00 f250 with the 7.3 turbo diesel and 360,000 miles thing runs like a champ no slipping no rough shifts might get passed down to me soon
One thing with those hubs, the vacuum hoses that run the lockers tend to jiggle out of place, really easy to hook back up though. Sometimes people get stuck on the trails because they don't know that.
You don't need a truck until you need a truck. I've thought about getting an older F-150 or 250 and having a reman engine and transmission put in it as long as the frame is OK. I've even thought about getting a Crown Vic cop car and dropping a 5.4 and transmission in it because as I've gotten older I've gotten more wild and crazy.
My dad had the 1 ton ford truck, to pull his trailer. The tranny went out on it, traded it in for a GMC truck, with a Diesel engine. He likes the GMC a lot more.
And cam chains and tensioners and blowing plugs right out of the heads, yes they are a POS. I was waiting on him to start ripping on it but he didn’t, hmm.
One of my best friends traded in his disaster on wheels of a Tahoe for a a used '07 4X4 F-250 with the diesel engine, extended cab, manual windows, and other factory equipment. His truck is also a two previous owner unit and now has around 350,000 miles on it (145,000 when he purchased it). My friend maintains his F-250 (mostly himself) and has yet to have a major problem with it. The biggest expense he has had to date was replacing the tires about 30,000 miles after he purchased the truck. His F-250 is paid for and continues to give him excellent service as a daily driver and heavy duty hauler/tower.
My 05 FX 4 has over 254000 miles on it! I pull a 6000 lb camper,. Car trailers, anything I want! Tow capacity is listed @ 9500 lbs! It's a 1/2 ton truck. Got the same transmission as the f250. The rear end just doesn't have floating axles!! Paid cash, after I had it checked out! Insurance is cheaper, taxes are cheaper! I personally don't see why you would buy a f250 with a 5.4! The f150 is practically the same truck, you actually have to get a super duty to get the floating axles!
Scotty is usually take your advice, but you saying a 3v triton can run hundreds of thousands of miles is the biggest lie I've ever heard. In my shop the amount of timing jobs and blown out spark plugs I see we don't even work on them anymore !!!!
Many of the failures on these engines are a result of not changing the oil frequently enough which causes sludge to accumulate in critical areas and plugging oil passages which are critical to keeping the internal parts lubricated and functioning as designed. The engineering isn't the greatest especially as it relates to the spark plug threads but there are solutions available to fix that issue. There are also issues with exhaust manifold bolts as there are on its competitors especially Dodge Ram.
06 i am assuming 5.4 3V. Those engines have an issue with the cam phasers and oil pumps. I just priced a timing job and a high flow oil pump. They quoted 4G for it.
The newer 08-10 5.4’s were sort of buttoned up. Lots of people with 3v 5.4’s got their money’s worth with them, though many were not running in pristine condition. From 04 and up they experience chain problem, rattling spark plugs getting stuck and breaking off. Even though some have problems they still run good. Most of the time people solve the big issues like spark plugs and live with the rattle noises for 100,000s of miles. These motors need their oil changed on time maybe every 5,000 or less. If you ever test one and see how smooth it is if well maintained. It’s gonna last you with proper maintenance. I have most experience with the 2002 5.4 2 valve which is a simpler design and known to be more trusty. 3v 5.4’s can have issues, but many have the potential to last if you take care of them!
@@Sully9549 I try to use 5W-20 since it’s rated but have used and mixed 5W30 also. According to many other Ford Modular and Triton owners, both is good. Motocraft is recommended good oil. Have you switched?
I finally upgraded from towing with my 2013 Armada and 1988 F350 IDI, to a proper modern truck, minus the DEF. I recently got my 4x4 2006 F250, with studded heads, aftermarket pumps and coolers, new turbo, newer injectors, 2014 Moritz flatbed, and 4 full size WeatherGuard toolboxes, for only $8k.
I have this truck with the 2005 6.0 diesel. I don't like hearing how the codes are not accurate. I had an issue where the battery light would just flash a little when going down hill. Going up to Wyoming on I-15 I had the Provo Ford check the battery and they said okay. I thank them for checking my truck at closing. Later my truck sporadically just quit moving. The engine idled but the throttle would not work. I would sit there on the side of the road waiting for the throttle to engage. I would turn on and off the AC and lights etc trying to change the power usage and eventually it would engage the throttle except once I got a friend to tow me home even though the engine still ran. After I turned it off and waited till the next day then it started and ran normal. I charged my dual batteries now and then and even bought two new ones. I took it to a shop and they said it was the alternator which was replaced and the throttle has not done that since but now I see the battery light is starting to flash again, only when the engine is in an idle situation like going down hill or coasting. Heads up for Super Duty owners. Having a throttle that will not respond is weird let alone frustrating.
It's a common misconception that the 5.4 3 valve is a "bad" engine. It is true though if you do have a bad one things are really bad LOL. My brother has an 07 F-150 with a crappy maintenance history but the thing has 183,000 mi runs great. I had a 2010 f150 super well maintained motor grenaded at 106,000. Hit and miss but most of them are fine. This guy is lucky I didn't hear any rattling or anything so he's probably good for a while 👍
My 98 F150 5.4 4x4 has 224k without any engine or transmission issues just regular service since we got it new.But admitted this last trans job I added a qt of Lucas stop slip.Shifts like new
I’ve got a 2000 Chevy with hand crank windows and a V-8 and I bet you it’ll outlive me well it’s only get 120,000 miles and only drive in the winter but keeps going
I just bought a 2004 f150 and it has 29,000 miles on it. I paid $10,000 for it. I didn’t wanna pay that much but the truck market is crazy right now and I’ve seen the same year with 240,000 miles listed for $7,000
Let's see you do an F-250/350 ....I got one about 2-3 years ago just turning 200k mi. for $14,000 it's an F-350 Lariat Crewcab 4x4. Shifts like a dream, ice cold A/C, and handles everything I tow/haul. Go see a new 3/4 or 1 ton pickup prices.
Looks like my 2005 F250. I’ve got only 102K on it and I’m the 2nd owner. I bought it from someone I worked with, so I know the miles are good. Paid for and does what I need it to do, pull our boat. I looked at several new 3/4 tons; $70K and up! Ridiculous.
That is a "very base "work truck.. I didn't know they made an F-250 of that year that had manual windows... It is a bare bones truck.. Good work truck though... I had rather have it than a Chevy
Those engines are pretty durable, but they sure aren’t known for power. They will make some decent power, but at pretty high RPM. Most people don’t want to hear them rev, but they were designed that way and it’s actually fine.
@@charlesjackson1700 just confusion when a mechanic says one of the worst engines I've ever heard of is "great" and to worry about the transmission and not a peep about the horrendous motor... if I were a mechanic or not, I would strongly advise people to stay away from 5.4 ford after 2003 year, not encourage buying a total turd!
@@XDM10 I think I would go with your advice in reference to buying one of those..The mechanics that do the talking advise the same thing... I also have seen videos about them blowing out spark plugs.

They don't leak coolant. They have oil pressure problems need to run 5w30 and 10w30. If the engine get sludge or low oil pressure it's a very costly fix though. Whole new OEM timing and new Hp pump. Plus the cams wear and the roller followers. Very expensive in parts alone.

Need to run 5w30 in the 3v. They have oil pressure problems. That and 5k oil changes
Not a ford guy whatsoever but for 7.5K that looks like a damn solid truck scotty.

I was going to say watch the spark plugs as well but they will let you know when they come out lol 😆

One thing with those hubs, the vacuum hoses that run the lockers tend to jiggle out of place, really easy to hook back up though. Sometimes people get stuck on the trails because they don't know that.

@@bigjohn6405 my F250 does too, but the front axle still needs vacuum running to the hubs for the manual mechanism to function
Them 05’-07’ trucks are the best looking. My 07’ has 500,000 on it.
My dad had the 1 ton ford truck, to pull his trailer. The tranny went out on it, traded it in for a GMC truck, with a Diesel engine. He likes the GMC a lot more.
Um Scotty those 5.4 3 valve engines are garbage, cam phasers
And cam chains and tensioners and blowing plugs right out of the heads, yes they are a POS. I was waiting on him to start ripping on it but he didn’t, hmm.
The truck is 15 years old. I'd say those issues were either taken care of long ago or this has been well maintained, hence it's still good
One of my best friends traded in his disaster on wheels of a Tahoe for a a used '07 4X4 F-250 with the diesel engine, extended cab, manual windows, and other factory equipment.
Guy just bought a 7500 grenade once that 3V pops
the 5.4 L ford engines are lemons.
I'd absolutely disagree
Got 380,000 miles out of my 2003 E350 van before I sold it due to severe body rust.
Your wrong, 5.4 04 and above, know your engines before comments
I currently have an 02 f150 sipercab 5.4..240,000 and not an issue..had a 02 f250 super duty xlt lariat,totaled at 270,000..can't beat a ford!!!

I wish it had the 7.3 Powerstroke Diesel cuz those run forever
My 05 FX 4 has over 254000 miles on it! I pull a 6000 lb camper,. Car trailers, anything I want! Tow capacity is listed @ 9500 lbs! It's a 1/2 ton truck. Got the same transmission as the f250. The rear end just doesn't have floating axles!! Paid cash, after I had it checked out! Insurance is cheaper, taxes are cheaper! I personally don't see why you would buy a f250 with a 5.4! The f150 is practically the same truck, you actually have to get a super duty to get the floating axles!
Correct me if im wrong but, 2v v8 tritons are so smoothp
@Rick the 3v redesign of the 5.4 happened in the mid 2000s which added vvt and cam phaser issues that weren't present on earlier 5.4s
@Rick I said 3 valve not the older 2 valve engines 🤯
@Rick yes again 3v engines no matter maintenance have timing failures and break off or blow out plugs, they used to come through my shop every week
06 i am assuming 5.4 3V. Those engines have an issue with the cam phasers and oil pumps. I just priced a timing job and a high flow oil pump. They quoted 4G for it.
Doing that work won't fix the issue of oil delusion.. you most likely would need a brand new motor to fully fix your issue
Shoulda got 05'-07' 6.0 psd most underrated and reliable truck ever 500k easy when proper maintained and stock tuning.
Hi Scotty!
Hello
The 3 valve Triton will NOT go hundreds of thousands of miles. Those have cam phasers which cause severe issues at around 150k
i had one with 340000 mi. still ran great
@@davidmckibbin4440 That was lucky, they had rocker arm issues as well. Some would eat spark plugs on one cylinder.
also maintenance is a key factor on all the newer engines and i dont mean by the book, and of course how you drive maters also.
Bought a 2019 f250 6.2 liter gasser. Only 44 k miles on it. Great truck for towing the Toyhauler! Always great vids Scotty! 👍👍
Scotty, I have heard from other RUclips mechanics that the Ford 5.4 3v engine is terrible. What are your thoughts on that?
@@Samuel-zl7yw is it a good idea to keep using 5w 20, or switching to 5w 30 would help?

Ridiculous.

When Scotty hits that familiar straight away, I know it's about to get serious.
Other car websites say the 5.4 3 valve engine is terrible. Head gaskets leaks water into oil destroying the engine. Known engine problem. They say avoid this engine. Yet, Scotty says it is a great engine. I am confused.
