DeWalt DCD996 Drill Repair Update

  • In this follow up video the DeWalt DCD996 finds it way back on the bench.... This drill has gave up again on us here. I believe it is due to the fuse being a higher rating fuse than I originally thought and the minimized surface contact of the original re-soldered fuse may have been the issue. This drill had worked ok for around 6 months now, but it is time to crack it back open. I believe with most of the fuse manufactures out there using V marking for 30A fuse that this is most likely a 30A fuse here. I ordered some replacements from eBay due to shipping cost of ordering these by there self at somewhere like Dig-Key or Newark. I would absolutely trust these brands better for sure. I will have a link in the description for all three if needed. Hope you find this update helpful and thanks for watching!

    I would expect that the tool would draw at least 20A under load. Your 30A fuse is probably a good choice.

    The fuses used in manufacture have connections on the end sides, but insufficient connection area on the underside, so they don't seem suitable for surface mounting. The replacement fuse used in your second video had more pad on the underside.

    You should cover the board in epoxy resin to protect it against water moisture and vibrations. GOOD JOB!

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  Год назад +3

      I fully understand that epoxy potting is superior to vibration and moisture ingress, but I am a technician. So my way of looking at it is not just reliability, but also repairability! We know electrolytic caps and from time to time Mosfets or fuses will blow. The epoxy makes the boards throwaway really and man I can't stand that. I really like it when things are made to be easy to repair and man are we more of a throw away generation than ever. I do understand the thought in this case about the vibration though. I believe it is more of a heat dissipation issue but epoxy may be the answer if they keep having the same failure! Thanks for your kind comment! I appreciate it.

    Are any of these model DCD985? I have owned my DCD985 since brand new in mid-2012. Only used as a homeowner, not a contractor. For awhile now, maybe a couple of years (I don't use it everyday) it seemed as though the drill was not getting full-power. I attributed this to failing batteries as the original Dewalt batteries weren't holding charge for very long as of last year when I stopped using them they were about 9 years old. So I purchased brand new batteries which are very strong but the problem persists. I noticed that if I manipulate the trigger switch or squeeze really hard that I will once again get full power. So it seems like the switch is at fault or dirty. I understand I can purchase a replacement but most folks who replace them have NO operation of the drill at all. I'm wondering if it's worthwhile investigating or cleaning the switch if that is even possible? Or do you believe it to be simply worn out?

    Hi, what do you use to remove the silicone junk? I'm so tired of digging it out of everyone I repair

    • @ThriftyToolShed
      @ThriftyToolShed  Год назад

      Typically I just carefully dig it out even though it is a pain. Some silicone is a little more stubborn and sticky than others and I use some 99% IPA to help by saturating it and letting it sit for a little while. If it's still stubborn I will use my hot air station turned down to around 100⁰ to help while not getting the board too hot. I would rather just dig it out slowly if it's soft and easy as the EGO battery potting. It is a pain to get started but it's the type that lifts up in big chunks once you get it going. Some of the sticky silicone you just about have to use the Alcohol and a little bit of heat.

      Wow! So the clutch is not working at all it is just in drill mode all the time? Interesting. On this repair I remember running the drill itself while testing at one point and the clutch sensor wires were not connected. I never tried the clutch to see since the issue with this one was it was not running at all. I knew it was at least for feedback, but did not even realize it was full e-clutch.
      So your going to need the exact speed control for yours unless they are similar enough and simply don't have the wires soldered on the board. That is why you were asking about that in the earlier comment. I have not run into that yet.

      It's been a while, but I believe I unplugged the sensor when testing the one that belonged to my friend. I am pretty sure with the clutch sensor unplugged the drill itself still ran fine. The clutch feedback was obviously going to be an issue of some kind. I am thinking the motor itself ran fine. I would be more inclined to lean towards the speed control part. First make sure the hall sensor connector on the back of the motor is connected well.

      As mentioned, I have not worked on that exact one to say for sure. It's hard to say from comments. Your description of white with brown spot in middle did seem like it could be a fuse that had gotten hot, on the other hand it could be a light brown capacitor going across positive and ground and you would not want to short that out. It's way too hard to help diagnose from comments on a board I have not actually worked on myself. Best of luck to ya!

      Ok, if it's just like the one in the video then those 3 light brown SMD devices are indeed ceramic capacitors and are most likely bypass caps so usually go from positive to a negative and should not be continuity across them. Hope it helps!

      Hi,
      I use many kinds really. I use the following the most. The Amtech Flux is great for board soldering especially smaller items. The RA Flux is same flux in the solder core and works great for tinning wires and larger solder jobs and it's less expensive by volume. The solder I use is leaded 63/37 and I actually have several sizes from .020 to .062.
      The low melt solder is great for de-soldering only, but is a life saver de-soldering large power components and connectors that can't take a lot of heat when removing. Northridge Fix has many of these items for sale on there website and they work excellent, I will put some recommended links below as well if you find them helpful.

      Hey I had this drill and it ended up taking a crap on me literally just quit right in the middle of a job out in the middle of BFE. I was cussing like a sailor! So I ended up getting a replacement and kept the drill that failed. 2 1/2 years later the replacement took a crap so I watched your video and both drills are back to work! Same exact thing happened to both of them! If you didn't post this video I would've had to buy a third one. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and know how. I'm pretty handy at fixing things and I'm glad I now have 2 working drills! Thanks again!
