Great video, Ash. I happened to be in Northampton last weekend and called into the Cheaney and Loake factory shops. I enquired about a tour of the Cheaney factory - love seeing the craftsmanship in producing quality men's shoes.
Those boots you bought look fabulous. Look forward to watching that video. I've thought about investing in a pair of Trickers country boots - will be watching with interest. It's important we retain these quality British shoe manufacturers for generations to come.

Tricker’s are great. Kudu leather is one of the best, no breaking in required. They have it in burgundy, caramel, moss green and another shade of red. They also use Castorino suede in unlined boots and shoes for summer, which is not the typical split leather one finds on inferior footwear, but full reverse suede.

Another informative video, thanks Ash! This is more motivation to seek out shoes/clothing made in the UK, USA, or other non-sweatshop country. It seems like one of the challenges to keep companies like Trickers in business, is being able to find young folks to learn the skills of manual shoe manufacturing. In our gig economy world, lifetime work as a shoe craftsperson has appeal.

@Ash, I can confirm that Kudu leather makes gorgeous boots. I have an exceptional pair of Kudu leather boots from Cheaney. But it’s not smooth leather, like calfskin. It’s a buttery leather, exceptionally comfortable. It’s also exceptionally characterful. Every piece of kudu exhibits it’s own patina and wear patterns. Excellent if you enjoy rustic leather, but not something for those who want a smooth finish.

    • @John_in_da_UP
      @John_in_da_UP 2 месяца назад

The kudu hides come from wild animals that are necessarily culled from time to time. Contact with predators and the environment add plenty of "character" to their skin. Judging by the marks on my Parkhurst sage (green) kudu boots, my antelope didn't go down without a fight. Awesome comfort right out of the box.

Think about this. Even though this is a traditional shoe company making traditional shoes, so much has changed in how they make shoes since their founding.
In 1829 there was no Goodyear welting machines, because there was no Charles Goodyear Jr., who wouldn't come up with Goodyear welting for forty years. And his father, Charles Goodyear Sr., wouldn't invent vulcanization of rubber for fifteen years after Tricker's began making shoes.
So the techniques they use weren't even around when they started.
I wonder what changes will take place in the years ahead.

It’s a more generous last, so a comfortable fit with thicker socks, so perfect for cooler weather, or prolonged walking. Leather is superior in so much as thickness and construction is noticeably improved due to 100% hand production. But the Burford is half the price of the Trickers boot, so still an amazing boot. It’s a bit like comparing a BMW with a Rolls Royce.

An obviously...very stoutly made boot. Being an American, from Texas...I would love to own a pair. Maybe one day, I can thrift a pair off of ebay, or Poshmark. Gorgeous boots. American made shoes/boots...are far inferior to British made footwear. Even our best made footwear, by Alden, is not on the same level as British made footwear. The British...know what they are doing when it comes to footwear.

    Good morning Ash, Chaps
Back to Saturday routine of breakfast and Chap's Guide.
What a fantastic review of a heritage company. Too few remaining companies like this, with the rise of bulk manufacturers in the Asian sub-continent.
I feel the enthusiasm of Scott percolating through your review.
    Looking forward to the unboxing.

@@TheChapsGuide Only shoe factory shop I've been to is Altberg in Richmond. I absolutely destroyed my first pair, through occupational abuse. 3 soles a couple of patch repairs before they were beyond salvage. I subsequently bout another pair which 15+ years later are still holding up. My Son has just got 2 pairs of Altbergs made to measure and paid for by the Job (lucky git)
      *salute
