Replacing the internal assembly instead of the entire unit saves a great deal of time and frustration (a lot of digging, connecting the water line, etc.). Your videos are excellent and have helped me a lot!
If you have a Maxi-Paw wrench it is faster to replace the internal assembly of the rotor rather than digging up the head for replacement. Thanks for the feedback.
I have these sprinklers and was wondering how to get the sprinkler head to stay up so I could work on it. I figured there was a special tool for this and you have educated me on the Maxi-Paw Wrench! Thanks!
Sometimes with the Maxi-Paw the trip just quits working. It does require more maintenance than the stream rotors. If the head won't pop completely up or down you probably have sediment in the bottom of the head restricting this.
Thanks for making this. I was hoping there was a way to replace the rotor without having to dig up 20 sprinkler heads on my property. Much appreciated.
that rainbird screwdriver that you are not using is to remove the center cap on the lid...take a pair of needle nose pliers and remove the lid...take a water hose with a nozzle and flush out the bottom until clean...then remove the old internals and screw in the new one....
The "trip" going bad is one of the biggest flaws of the Maxi-Paw. If your head hammers around but won't trip back I'm afraid you'll have to replace the head or the internal assembly.
do the orbit pulse have the same problem. i have a number of them that are doing this. sometimes i fiddle with it to get it going again but i think i need to replace them all. also if you have a lot of mud couldn't you just use a shop vac to suck it up. i have a battery powered milwakee i think i will try that because i'm thinking i have a lot of mud and rocks.
I've found that the easiest way to clean these after removing the head is with a wet-dry vac, followed by an air compressor before flushing the line like the previous suggestion.
Our Rainbird Maxi-Paw Model 2045A (house is 19 years old) is leaking much water from below the impact sprayer. Must I remove the whole cylinder assembly and replace, or can I install a new seal? Impact sprayer still works fine. Thank you.
I remember seeing these Maxi-Paws at an apartment my family lived in about 11 years ago now. These seem to give off a oily smell when they get weathered and the sun hits them.
I always love watching your videos can you make one showing how to replace maxi/mini paw impact sprinklers with gear drive rotors I would love to see your experience on that too very cool 😎
One bit of advice I've seen is when you have the whole head or just the rotor off (especially if you're cleaning up a lot of mud and what not before putting in the new rotor?) it might be a good idea to run the sprinkler w/o rotor for a minute to clear out any debris. Still looking for somebody / anybody (maybe you iScaper1!) w/ a video showing nozzle replacement.
I ordered the wrench, but found it's for a Maxi Paw, not a Mini. Don't make the same mistake! I did get the sprinkler head up out of the can but still couldn't figure out why it would not reverse except there was a lot of friction and drag on the paper clip pin. Finally said to heck with it and put in a new impact sprinkler. Probably the least frustrating option for most people.
I am having trouble getting the sprinkler head out of the can, too, with the wrench from Home Depot. The wrench is supposed to work for both Maxi and Mini (I don't know which one I have). Did you find there is a wrench only for the Mini?
@@bakerstreet101 The only difference in the Maxi-Paw and the Mini-Paw is the body and the Maxi-Paw comes with the different nozzles. If your rotor is bad and you need to replace it buy the cheaper Mini-Paw. It can be used interchangeably with either Mini-Paw or Maxi-Paw body. The removal tool is not specific to either. It can be used for both. I use it all the time for both. Sometimes it just takes a little more force to remove the rotor. Make sure your wrench is seated well into the bottom of the body. Sometimes mud or other debri make it hard to grab.
So is it normal for the body to fill up with water like this? Some of mine are doing that and others are not. I just cleaned a lot of debris and dirt out of my system and they were filthy some of them! Some of them are not shooting very far and I think need replaced. thank you
This video is the most help for my issues. I have these old lawn genie sprinklers that are the same as the rain bird. I’ve never changed them out before and will probably need to remove the entire thing. Would it be best to find a professional or can a video be found or done to show how I can do that?
You could do it. I have a number of videos on replacing heads. Easiest way is to dig down to the tee that the heads screws into, spin out the old head, then spin in a new head. Impact rotors like the Maxi-Paw require a lot of maintenance, I would install a Rain Bird 5004 rotor instead.
Sounds like the trip lever isn't working. It's a common problem with Maxi-Paws. My suggestion is to replace the head with a Rain Bird 5004 stream rotor. It's much more reliable than a Maxi-Paw.
what are the options when the ring on the rotar is stripped so the wench cannot unscrew it? I have one like that in my front yard that needs to be replaced.
Use vise-grips to grab on and turn it. You may have to use cutters or metal shears to chew the plastic down from the top until you get a purchase on the bottom element. Of course this is destroying the old rotor, but the goal is to get the old internal rotor removed to swap in a new rotor, without having to excavate and re-plumb the whole works.
Great tutorial!! What could be the reason or reasons for the lack of water pressure in one of my outputs? Doesn't even push up the rotor. I have 5. All others sre fine . Thank you!
Sounds like an obstruction somewhere. I would dig up the head, remove it from the threaded fitting, and then check the fitting and head for debris. Might need to fire up the zone with the head removed and flush the fitting.
New to sprinkler systems. Found my rainbird body filling with water and the rotor not rising up to spray. Even pulling the rotor up while water is on nothing is coming out. Any suggestions? Or is a replacement needed?
Could be a lot of things. Too many heads on the sprinkler zone, a leak in the zone, obstruction in the fitting feeding the head, or a bad head. I would replace the head first and check the fitting feeding the head.
yep, of course, Home Depot didn't have the wrench, so I ordered it online at Amazon for $3.95. Also, is there a difference from Maxi-Paw and the Mini-Paw other than range the sprinkler can water?
@@JaronPope The only difference in the Maxi-Paw and the Mini-Paw is the body and the Maxi-Paw comes with the different nozzles. If your rotor is bad and you need to replace it buy the cheaper Mini-Paw. It can be used interchangeably with either Mini-Paw or Maxi-Paw body.
Some maxi-paw troubleshooting. Have same challenge as Travis - head not returning. That little spring up near the trip can't get worn and weaken the trip? Also, if my heads don't come down after shutting off what's the fix? What if one head is suddenly not coming up far enough? Thinking NOT water pressure. Seems like this sprinkler more than not is not fixable -- just replace.
What's the reason Maxi-Paws are no longer installed in systems? In my area, many of the houses still have the original mini/maxi-paws, so they seem to last long. Sadly, they're also being replace so the sound of these at 11 at night is disappearing.
+ChicagoSirens Maxi-Paws don't tend to be as durable as the Rain Bird 3500 and 5000 series rotors. The trip spring is one of the weak points in the design.
Is it okay to run a zone with a Maxi-Paw and 5004 or would it be better to go ahead and replace the 5004 with a Maxi Paw? Also, would two Maxi Paws with the red nozzle work on a zone run of a outdoor faucet at 55psi, with 1/2 inch supply pipe running them?
Two Maxi-Paws with red nozzles should work. The red nozzle uses 2.5 gpm at 55 psi so you would be using 5.0 gpm for the two heads. This fits into the range of what a 1/2" pipe will deliver in flow.
Instead of replacing the internal guts of the maxi paw, have you found any kind of spray cleaner/dissolver that could be sprayed on the internal parts and after awhile cleaned off and take away the red coating that had been forming on the parts...which is from the iron content in my well water. I know at some point it's just easier to flip in the new guts...
We just tried replacing a maxi paw. Followed all the steps, but somehow we loosened the pop up shaft. It wiggles and leaks. Have we broken it, or is there a way to fix it?
I followed the video and successfully replaced my maxi paw sprinkler head. However, when I run the sprinkler the housing fills with water and overflows, even though the sprinkler is functioning. After it turns off the water is eventually absorbed, but internal assembly does not fully recede. What do I do now?

Maxi-Paws require a lot of maintenance, that why I use Rain Bird's 5004 rotor. A Maxi-Paw comes with an 08 nozzle that uses 4 gpm (gallons per minute) at 55 psi. If you're running 2" Schedule 40 pipe you could install 12 heads and stay below the 5 fps (feet per second) velocity rule.
I found that different wrenches are necessary for the Mini-Paw and Maxi-Paw, even though Rainbird only sells one tool that is supposed to work for both. But the Maxi-Paw rotor seems to fit inside the Mini-Paw shell. Does anyone know if it is OK to put a Maxi rotor into a Mini-Paw shell?

Easier to just replace that part than dig out and reattach a whole new one. For me anyway.
on the bottom there is also a 1/2 inch ips inlet
+Tyler Cook
If I remember right there is a 1/2" side inlet on the head and on the bottom there is a combination 3/4" or 1/2" inlet.
yeah, because the plug for the side inlet is a 1/2 inch size, so the only way to get the plug into the bottom is to have that 1/2 inch inlet
How do I keep the head up to get it out of the ground?
There's a collar on the Maxi-Paw wrench that holds the internal assembly up while you thread it out of the body.
I usually purge the mud by turning it on.
