Jennifer Maria Syme (December 7, 1972 - April 2, 2001) was an American actress, personal assistant and record company executive. She was in a relationship with actor Keanu Reeves that began in 1998 and ended in early 2000, following the stillbirth of their daughter. The couple reunited in 2001. Syme died at the age of 28 in an automobile accident on April 2, 2001.
Syme was born in Pico Rivera, California, and was raised in Laguna Beach. Her parents were Maria St. John and Charles Syme, a retired California highway patrol officer, and they divorced some time after Syme was born.
When Syme was about to start high school, she and her mother moved to Los Angeles, where Syme developed a passion for moviemaking and especially for David Lynch's films. Actor and filmmaker Scott Coffey said that Syme was 16 years old when she walked into Lynch's office. "She was a huge fan and wanted to do anything on Twin Peaks", Coffey said. Syme landed a job at Lynch's company, Asymmetrical Productions, where she started as an intern and ended up working for five years. She introduced Lynch to many of the musicians he used in his projects, and according to Coffey, she had a huge influence on the music in the 1997 film Lost Highway.
Syme also did some acting, and Scott Coffey directed her in five independent short films, the last one, Ellie Parker, was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2001. Syme later joined the staff of a music label. She was also a personal assistant to guitarist Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction and, later, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
In 1997, Syme made her film debut in a small role credited as "junkie girl" in David Lynch's Lost Highway.
Syme had a small role credited as "casting chick" in Scott Coffey's film Ellie Parker, released in 2005, reprising the role she played in the 2001 short film of the same title.
At the time of her death in 2001, Syme had enrolled in a film-supervision course at UCLA, and was working as a record company executive.
According to reports, Syme met actor Keanu Reeves in 1998 at a party thrown for Reeves's rock band, Dogstar, and they started dating. However, Syme's mother, Maria St. John, disputed the reports and said the two had known each other for a decade, and that she was with Syme when she met Reeves, and it was not at a party.
On December 24, 1999, after eight months of pregnancy, she gave birth to her child with Reeves, Ava Archer Syme-Reeves. The child was stillborn. Syme's and Reeves's grief over the loss put a strain on their relationship, which ended several weeks later. They remained close friends after their break up and were back together in 2001.
St. John said that Syme became very depressed when her grandfather, Alfonso Diaz, died in March 2001. She even ended up in the hospital for the first time since her baby had died.
Marilyn Manson mentioned Syme and how she helped him work with director David Lynch in his 1998 memoir The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, and later depicted her in a painting called "A Mother Without a Daughter and a Daughter Without a Mother (In Memory of Jen)".
On the night of April 1, 2001, Syme attended a party at the home of musician Marilyn Manson. After being driven home by another party guest shortly before dawn, she left her home, reportedly to return to the party.[18] She drove her Jeep Grand Cherokee into a row of parked cars on Cahuenga Boulevard in Los Angeles. She was partially ejected from the vehicle and died instantly. She was 28 years old. Keanu Reeves, Dave Navarro, Scott Coffey, Anthrax's guitarist Scott Ian, and David Lynch acted as pallbearers at Syme's funeral, who was eulogized to the sound of Barbra Streisand's "Higher Ground" and Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings" as Lynch screened a series of snapshots from Syme's life at the Good Shepherd Church in Beverly Hills. She was buried next to her daughter at the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. David Lynch dedicated his 2001 film Mulholland Drive to Syme in the closing credits.
An investigation into the collision found that Syme was not wearing a seatbelt and was intoxicated at the time of the collision. Police found two rolled-up dollar bills that contained a white, powdery substance, and two bottles of prescription drugs: a muscle relaxant and an anticonvulsant. Syme's mother told police her daughter had recently sought treatment for back pain from an earlier automobile collision, and for depression stemming from her daughter's stillbirth.

My 7 year old daughter Snowden was killed by a drunk driver. The man whom killed her also died 5 minutes after trapped in his truck. I hated him for a very long time. I realized he didn't get in his truck that night to kill someone, especially a little girl. The more I found out about him, the sadder I felt for him. He left behind a 3 yr old little boy who didn't understand his dad was gone forever and why. I finally forgave him.

Having lost so many people in my life, I still can't possibly imagine what Jennifer and Keanu must have gone through and I think that many of us might have struggled to cope with just how massive that loss was for them. It's just so incredibly sad that Jennifer lost her life as well. 😔

I can tell you personally from my brief interaction that he went out of his way to be nice. But that doesn't mean anything. Everyone has nice moments. What’s important is that she was an absolute sweetheart, with a wide open and very pure heart. Which can almost be a detriment for young women in Hollywood. This town is full of predators that no one can protect you from. Not even Keanu Reeves. And she was way in over her head-which was not her fault. She just didn’t see the bad in people… and that can be very dangerous in this business when you’re gorgeous and 19.

I remember her passing but wasn't aware of the reason why. Keanu has got to be the most down to earth, kind, compassionate, caring actor in history. He's been thru so much in his life. She probably was already hooked before the baby. I believe her previous car accident was long before her baby and she was on pain meds for her back. One can only wonder if that 1st accident was also her fault and if she was hooked before being prescribed back pain meds which caused that 1st accident.

Keaney's life is so full of tragedies that he could have come completely unhinged, but he didn't. That's why Matthew Perry recent mouthing off (while promoting his bio book) about K living a good life while others like River Phoenix died was so reprehensible.
It’s crazy that Marilyn Manson might have been responsible for her death in some way. if we were tbh though she went to his place by her own choice so she sadly caused this to happen to her.

I did not know the details of this tragedy until now. Losing someone in this way carries so much stigma. Coupled with the loss of a child puts much of the persona of Keanu in perspective. It's just a devastating loss. My prayers continue for all of us who live every day with pieces missing. My BFF died in a single car rollover. She was also under the influence and Batteling deamons. Her name was Mary Elizabeth Waters. She is missing from me and those who loved her. It breaks hearts.. 💔 💞🙏🕊
I remember seeing pictures of Keanu as a pallbearer at her funeral in the tabloids when i was a teenager. It was a big story at the time. Now i can see what an invasion of his privacy those photos were as he keeps so private.

As a parent, you should never have to bury your child. I can’t even imagine what Jennifer was going through. Then her mother just lost a grand baby then her daughter. So tragic.
No mother should ever have to feel the feeling of her children stolen and alienated away by the father.. ya can't get those years back.. at least the mother was able to raise her child

Even though Jennifer was not an A-list star like Keanu, it’s great that you did a video on her & her still-born daughter. 2 years after Ava died, Jennifer was finally reunited with Ava in heaven. RIP to Jennifer & Ava. My condolences go out to Jennifer’s mother for the loss of her daughter & granddaughter. Last but not least, condolence to Keanu for the loss of his girlfriend/mother of his daughter & daughter.

I always learn interesting stories about people from your videos, and I understand more and more about human beings in general through them. I love how you never judge people who should be given the benefit of any doubt. Poor girl in this case was, no doubt, lost in a sea of grief and had no other way out of it. How does the heart heal after the loss of a baby? I love the name they gave to Ava. She’s free like a bird, like her name.
Keanu has been my fav actor for years. I remember when this happened. A sad sad story. He has had a lot of tragedy in his life . I think she was destroyed after losing Ava and was self medicating which many do. I felt so bad for her and K. Thank you Scott for respectfully telling this sad story. She was so young. I’m studying to be a substance use disorder counselor to hopefully help those like this beautiful woman before such tragic endings. I really appreciate your understanding of the sickness of self medicating. When my parents passed away, I used whatever I could get my hands on to numb the pain and to end my life. After a DUI, I was legally required to attend “treatment” classes which were in a facility that was just awful. The staff was so condescending and hateful. Thankfully, eventually I was blessed to find an awesome therapist who did help me cope in healthier ways. Since I survived all of this nightmare, I strive to become a caring and understanding counselor who can help those like this lovely soul hopefully before it’s too late. So awesome how you have such a big heart Scott. Thank you for another great video.

With so much drug abuse in our family honestly appreciate a counselor who has walked in the fire and recovered You are more apt to listen and take their counsel to heart. God speed…….

I have been clean for almost 7 years. Started off on Pain Pills and than I was a IV user and going "H". I went to treatment and classes. Basically everything I can do because I had 3 children. My 2nd daughter I lost Custody and visitation for awhile. I was supervised by my sister for awhile. I got clean and have my daughter every other weekend and basically when I want when there is no school or Vacation. I loved one of my counselors that helped me through it all. Substance counselors don't get enough credit helping people. They help people so much and I appreciate every single one. Good luck on your journey hopefully you actually can help somebody like somebody helped me. ☺️💜
Great video, Scott. You are always so respectful towards people who are the subject of your videos who passed away in situations in which alcohol and/or drugs were involved. There can often be a stigma attached to such occurrences, along with a lot of negative opinions and judgment. At least out of respect for the family for the person who passed, it would be nice for people to keep their negative opinions to themselves. Anyone who has been on the surviving end of such a horrific death of a loved one would know this. Thank you for your kindness ❤

Yeah sometimes we can learn from the deads tragic lives, it's not disrespecting them but the truth needs to be the most important thing besides family feelings, that's a huge help in grieving

This was so beautifully put together, I lost my daughter 36hrs after her birth so I know Jennifer and keanu pain it’s something u can’t put into words there is no pain quite like it and I did things for several years after her death that I would never of normally done, pain killers cocaine were my coping mechanism at the time which I’d never done before but nobody knows how they would cope till they have to go thru it. Thanks for sharing this sad story, I wasn't aware of that. When I visited the graveyard this year I noticed her stone and I am always shocked when I see such a young person pass away. Now I know the story and can barely imagine all those tragedies behind it.

Nice one Scott. I hung out with Keanu while he was in Vegas, not Hollywood. He was lowkey, cruising around with his band "Dogstar". Most people don't realize Keanu's passion for music.
Scott you are 100% correct in that we need to think of people such as Jennifer and a kind and loving way! ... I never lost a child but I can slightly imagine the pain she might have went through that let her down this path!

I lost a child who was 7 in 1997. My husband died with him. The loss of a child plunges a mother into the depths of a despair so deep it is difficult to see yourself ever living in a world without your child. You want to throw yourself into the open grave with your child’s casket . I had three other older children. I loved them certainly.
But there is no pain and I mean not even physical pain ….no pain worse. I’d rather have surgery and be refused pain medication than lose another child or go through that loss again. …..
My heart aches for her…..because life doesn’t seem worth living and I understand the inclination to drink, take drugs and numb yourself in any and every way possible. “But for the grace of God go I “……..after all of these years I still think of my son every single day. I barely survived it myself. I for one, could never judge her ……

Reminds me of what Rush drummer Neil Peart (RIP) went through in the late 90s. His daughter was killed in a car accident on her way back to college, and 10 months later his wife passed from cancer, largely brought on by the heartbreak of losing their daughter. I can’t imagine going through anything REMOTELY as tragic as what they all went though.

This is so sad Scott. I myself and my ex wife lost a child stillborn and it tore me apart and still I haven't been able to comprehend why it happened but I can say I have personal experience with the trauma of losing a child like that and it tore my wife and I apart and my ex wife left me too not shortly afterwards. But I know how that feels and it's absolutely horrible. RIP Jennifer and ava.

It is not my intention to take anything away from what happened to Jennifer or her and Keanu's baby, but the things that Keanu has been through and survived has been brutal. I am speaking as a fan of the Actor Keanu and the Man himself. YEARS ago, when I was a Teenager, I was walking down the street with two females and we were discussing the topic of, if we were gay, who we would be interested in, and I said Keanu Reeves. He has always seemed like a cool and down to Earth kind of person. RIP Jennifer and Ava. Stay strong, Keanu!

Omg I didn't know about this. So so very sad. Keanu is an incredible human being so he must have mirrored his own personality in Jennifer. She must have been an incredible person also. So talented, what a shame. I did't know Keanu carries this tragedy with him.
