Contractors are paid to do this at work, but sometimes you have to go above and beyond e.g. usually I prefer to mop and brushes before my departure. It looks more professional, presentable and respectful whenever you pickup passengers.

Thats a flash back. We used the smaller blue balls (for those of you that dont know, thats what we call the blue die packet things for the lav). We did A LOT of pranks with those. Mostly opening them and putting them in each others boots.
Imagine having to explain to that hot chick you brought back to the dorms, why youre feet are bright blue. And it doesnt wash off...it takes about a week of being a blue footed boobie LOL.
I did want to comment (yes, Ill be the troll). Coaches are more like planes! Theyre even built similarly (maybe that should be an episode topic. If you want, we can work out the details. Lots of aircraft manufacturers built buses too. I still have those photos. The obvious is Grumman, with the Flxible 870, but Grumman made a coach, Lockheed tried one, and I think Boeing did as well. I think the RTS was inspired by the modular nature of the 707, with multiple length variants, engine configs etc).
    Also, congrats on the milestone!

we always had to fuel our buses and sweep and dump the septic when we returned from a trip. You have a better system because I found if you were tight on hours you could end up working an extra hour off the clocks in the yard and that made for a long tired day

This video is right up my alley. Let me start with my nitpick. Cruise ships have swimming pools and buffets, major difference there 😀
I spent several months in purgatory, I mean on the wash crew in the summer of 2018. It is hard, sweaty labor. Being in Seattle with near zero unemployment, finding people to show up was a challenge.
Our drivers would fuel the vehicle at the end of their shift, so no fueler on our crew. We did have a dedicated hostler who would move busses between the remote yard and the wash bay.
During the summer when a driver would pull into the wash bay from a multi day trip, the windshield was coated in a centimeter or two of dirt and mosquitos. It would take a single member of the wash crew an entire 30 minute cycle to clean it. 2 other exterior team members would dump the toilette and wash the exterior with a several feet tall machine with giant rollers; a cumbersome piece of equipment.
When it was my turn on the exterior crew, I would magically be chosen to dump toilette. The view was, how can I say...interesting.
The interior crew had 2 members. One would go in first to restock paper towels, Spare rolls of TP, garbage bag, etc then clean the toilet. The other would clean the interior windows with a small flash light to see minor head and finger smudges not visible to the naked eye.
After that, they would team up to vacuum seats and floor then finish off by mopping the floor.
We used to have a full time detailer who gave the busses a very detailed cleaning, such as pulling out the vents in the lavatory to be cleaned and removing the accumulation of general nastiness. Once that person quit, a replacement could not be found.
We would start l shift at about 6 pm. Most nights we would finish around 2am. However, during particularly busy nights, the wash crew would stay until 7am.
Alas, drivers never brought us pizza or shared tips. 😂

Another great video explaining the behind the scenes work that goes into keep and getting a bus on the road. I've been a driver and then moved in the Maintenance dept as the Admin for the last 15 years at various types of transportation companies. Without coordination between ALL departments the vehicles won't be going anywhere!
When I drove, I always tried to get the trash picked up and the floor swept when the company had a crew to clean. Made their job a little easier and gave me my daily workout (LOL). The last company I drove for had only 1 bus, a Prevost H3. Not only was I a driver but the cleaner. After I spent a few weeks deep cleaning it, my time spent cleaning the interior after a trip was about 45 minutes. Believe me, when the sticky buildups are gone, things are just easier to keep clean. And cell phones end up in the weirdest places. I've found them in the window vents! I had to drive to 2 different places to clean the exterior and dump the lav so all together it would be about 2 hours with driving.

All of what you listed in this video I do it alone, been doin the same thing for several months at my former job too. Been working in a team afterwards, but they hired people afterwards that weren't... doing the job right. I actually prefer working alone if it means it's done the right way. I take some pride getting a clean bus out of the wash bay. And most drivers really appreciate the efforts given.

Is the coach modern, is it flashy and shiny, is it fast, luxurious and silent? All that doesn't matter as much as cleanliness does. There are wash crews everywhere and I think that we don't pay enough attention to them. We take clean coaches, planes, ships an even office-toilets for granted. But it's not, it's hard and important work. Thanks so much for another great video!

I love the idea of keeping after a bus, making sure it's sparkling. And sometimes, cleaning the outside can be pretty challenging because of the height on some buses. I am 60 and sometimes I wouldn't mind having a cleaning crew with a few guys that are my age since they have seen the motorcoach design changes over and over in their lifetime. Due to things being touch sensitive, sometimes you really have to watch it so you don't activate something by accident. Tennant makes some good extractors for extracting the carpeted door panels and some extractors they make are good for extracting the seats. Detail Geek is a good channel for those wishing to learn how to detail the interior of a passenger vehicle. The way I would clean a shift boot on a bus with a manual transmission and if it was a 5-speed, I would put the shift lever in 2nd to clean the rear half of the shift boot, then I would shift to 3rd to get the front part. Then I would go thru all the gears to let the wind buff down the shift boot. When I was in my 20s, I at one time washed the church bus which was a 1971 International Wells Wayne bus. It had an 8-speed compound transmission in it. I think the engine was an IH 8 cylinder gasoline powered. It also had a jackknife door. Some buses like in Japan has jackknife doors. To detail the stepwell on that kind of a bus, you would have to close the door to get the part of the steps where the door sits and then open it once you are ready to clean the rest of the stepwell.

My job is washing coaches at Beaver in Winnipeg, did it since 2006. Off now cause of covid, likely back later this year. It's not a fun job, dumping cans, cleaning bins. Sometimes an interior gets missed or bus gets switched at the last minute and I have to clean the inside. Finding snags, overhead shop doors break down in winter, frozen toilets, bugs on the windshield, etc. Some buses come back from trips just disgusting inside. People like to live in their filth and don't care because they know someone else will clean up after them. If you're ever up here say hi.

My first job in high school was wash crew for a company that mainly chartered Japanese groups the company had around 40 Prevost. One thing I noticed is the buses that were on a Japanese charter always came back clean vs buses that came back from a luau run bus is usually trashed from the front to the back with sand, flower peddles, trash etc later on when I eventually became a driver on a luau run the bus guides throws a dancing party on the ride back to Waikiki even battling with other buses on the convoy and if another company form another luau pulls up it becomes a full on competition lol I had many wild luau returns

Fun flashbacks to being tasked to retrieve items from the toilet tanks, placed there either accidentally or intentionally....either way, alcohol was usually involved.
One was a set of dentures, believe it or not. (Those went straight in a container of full strength disinfectant once out of the tank)
You wouldn’t believe how often that stupid little T handle would break off the gate valve and I (the naive 20 year old apprentice) would be sent in to replace it. I’m so glad I work in local transit now....no toilets.
It wasn’t all bad though, the company I worked for had the contract to shuttle the Toronto Maple Leafs around during home games, and to and from the airport... there were usually extra gourmet catered dinners, sometimes whole cases of beer to bring home, waiting for us in the luggage compartments. It helped make up for the horrifying state they often left them in.

Also a few video suggestions if you're looking for ideas (You got a variety of stuff posted so maybe you've thought of these already!)
    - MCI vs Prevost vs Van Hool vs TEMSA pros/cons with each brand, why operators may go with one over another.
    - Compare/contrast between some competing coach models, i.e. J4500 vs H3-45 vs TX-45
    - Motorcoach interior options, seat types, layout options (standard 55ish pass, luxury 2x1 seating or executive with a kitchenette or other)
    - What goes into ordering a new motorcoach, picking options/powertrain/fuel type/considering business needs/etc.
    - Pet peeves of motorcoach drivers
    - Charter coach operation vs. line-haul operation

Quick question; for the Van Hool and Prevost, they are single stage right? How do you recommend polishing out swirl marks - a 2 step process, or a paint enhancement using an all in one AIO?

  • @mls515

Nice vid! One thing I sure don't miss about driving was the mess most groups would leave behind. I hated seeing how disgusting and disrespectful other human beings could be. It's like the shopping cart theory--someone who wouldn't think of leaving trash or spilled food in a friend or relative's vehicle has a different value set when riding in a motorcoach. It was usually my job to at least sweep and pick up loose trash which could easily be 30-45 minutes unpaid if you're only paid by the mile. The groups that routinely never tip (school groups, sports teams) were typically some of the worst offenders.
What do you think a company's approach to customer abuse of the motorcoach should be? Should they enforce a soiling fee or withhold a damage deposit when a motorcoach returns trashed, or should they let the customer get away with just about anything for fear of losing future business?

I have never met our wash/fueller crew... until I brought the motorcoach back from transit service to a deserted garage well-past midnight. Our whole garage came alive again at 1:45am. But it's nothing like the sprawling service bays seen in your video. It's great to see how meticulous Peoria is with their coaches. Does Peoria service motorcoaches from other companies visiting from other cities? A song from Heart in 1990 reminds me of the background music in your videos!: ruclips.net/video/OAfxs0IDeMs/видео.html

Do you guys charge more/less depending on how new and what model the coaches are?

    • @MotorcoachWorld
      @MotorcoachWorld  3 года назад +3

We assign equipment based on distance, type of group needs, function and whether its a local, airport transfer, or long haul. We tend to put newer equipment on trips that go further in distance. Groups that are bringing on Alcohol are usually assigned older equipment and charged an extra fee.

The driver will usually sweep and keep the coach fuelled with a company diesel card, often they’ll take it to whatever local coach company is in the area and dump the lavatory tanks there, (for a fee, of course)
I’d often see foreign coaches from the US northeast and Midwest at the garage I worked at during the summer tourist season.
